Positive: I stayed for 5nights as a solo traveler and I was glad I chose this B&B. From friendly hosts, to perfect cooked breakfasts and porridge, and access to excellent walks (my particular interest). It was all just lovely. I am a very slow walker and managed to walk from the valley up Sugar Loaf (via Abergavenny, and the Vineyard) and Blorenge (via Oak Lane), (including lots of stops to look at the view/eat), allowing one day to do each hill with a late-ish start of about 10am. Hitting the peaks around 2pm. Getting back to the farm about 4-6pm (allowing a bit of time to meander about on the various hill paths before making the way back, bearing in mind Sugar Loaf is a bit higher/further). These are long hikes of about 12-14miles a good way upward, and some of it is rather steep so even coming down isnโ€™t very fast - but if you take it slow it was very enjoyable and a lovely walk - lots of sheep and pig farms, wildlife, and streams etc. Shorter routes from about 3.5miles are available if you take a car and park in the higher car parks nearer the peaks. But I like the full walks. There are lots of other walks and hills too and Iโ€™m sure I will return to climb those at some stage. Carol also kindly gave me a lift over to the Big Pit National Coal Museum one day - and if you find time I do recommend the Jobaknock tour of the mine - only ยฃ5 (best book in advance day before to be sure of a time). Good way to spend an hour. The rest of the museum is free. All that, plus you get to stay on a working farm and Carol and the farm hands were kind enough to show me the new calfโ€™s and cows being milked by the โ€˜free to chooseโ€™ method (a robot milking system meaning they decide when they wish to be milked - very interesting)! There is an outdoor chair/table area where you can look out over the fields toward Blorenge - at dusk the bats came out. Which was nice.
Negative: To me everything was perfect. But bear in mind it is a dairy farm, so there is pretty much always something going on, and cows do have their distinct aroma. Which I personally find a nice smell reminiscent of the countryside. Iโ€™d suggest wellies, although Carol did kindly lend me a pair to go look at the cows. There are some bus stops, but do check the timetables if you plan to use them. The routes are a bit long to get not very far. Iโ€™d probably plan to use taxis to go anywhere other than Abergavenny (which is in easy walk distance) if your time is short.
Summary: Perfect. From lovely hosts, to yummy breakfast, then waking by the happy cows to go on beautiful countryside hikes.
