1 Bedroom Cottage in Bagni di Lucca, mobbiano

"Il Metatino" is a lovingly restored former chestnut roasting cottage, keeping it's original features, with arches, exposed chestnut beams and terra-cotta tiled floors and ceilings, with white washed walls. It has a couple of outside terraces, one with a pergola shaded by an ancient fig tree and another which is a sun trap, all have fantastic views with medieval hamlets and villages perched on the hillsides. The nearest town of Bagni di Lucca (the baths of Lucca) is 4 miles away down the valley and has all the amenities you could wish for, the historic city of Lucca is 16 miles away and the jewel of Tuscany.
Staying here gives you the chance to explore three important aspects of this beautiful region of Italy. Firstly, the art, architecture and civilised way of life in towns and cities - Lucca (18 miles), Pisa (35 miles) and Florence (60 miles) are easily reached by road or rail. Though they are further away, Bologna, Siena, Volterra and San Gimignano are all viable day trips by car. Lucca our provincial capital is truly a memorably beautiful town. The walk around the wall is the favourite walk of many locals let alone tourists, with views of the town on one side and of the surrounding countryside on the other. Bikes can be hired to add healthy extra exercise to the experience.
Secondly, there is the beach culture to sample. You will be a little over an hour's drive from Viareggio the main resort of the Versilian coast and miles of sandy beaches backed by the marble mountains of Carrara. The beaches are mainly managed by entry-charging concessions but there are advantages - umbrellas and loungers provided in your own space, freshly raked sand and, for refreshment, hot drinks, soft drinks, chilled wine and beer and cold and hot food on pleasant terraces. Further on, up the coastal autostrada and now a total drive of 90 minutes, Lerici is well worth a visit - a lovely little coastal town in a beautiful setting with a regular boat service across the Gulf of the Poets (Shelley, etc.) to the equally beautiful resort of Portovenere.
Thirdly is the Italy often hidden from the package tour tourist. This house is in the heart of a relatively unspoilt, hilly country region with the charming town of Bagni di Lucca just a ten minute drive away. The town has a three-pool facility in a beautiful, scenic setting, restaurants, bars, a range of shops and a local market. Villages are set in hilly chestnut forests where self-sufficiency exists alongside the use of local supermarkets. Footpaths and ancient mule tracks provide scenic routes for walkers of all ages and abilities. One favourite walk is the 15 minute stroll from the house to the well-stocked food shop in the next village! Another favourite activity has been simply sitting in the late afternoon sun on the courtyard, with an aperitivo, looking at the view and drinking in the atmosphere - along with the aperitivo of course!

Summary: We had a very good stay at the house. The location is excellent with wonderful perspectives across the deeply forested hills. The facilities were very good, made all the better with the help of the house-keeper, Roberta, who lives nearby. We would recommend the property and location.

Summary: This is a great place to stay up in the hills of north Tuscany, great views and very, very quiet. So peaceful with no pressure to do anything but have a drink of wine and take in the (stunning) view. If you get restless you can always go exploring into the hills to nearby villages or take in the sights of Lucca.

Summary: Il Metatino is simply magical. Its position in the little hillside hamlet of Longoio-mobbiano with its old stone buildings and the stunning views over the valley are just perfect. The cottage is as beautiful from the inside as from the outside and is very tastefully decorated with antique furniture. It is fully equipped with everything you need for your stay and offers a great selection of books and maps. There are several options for sitting outside in the garden or under the arches in front of the house, all with stunning views. Laura and her family, who look after the property and its guests are perfect hosts and simply very nice people. We were very much looking forward to the lasagne, cake and other treats after reading about them in some of the reviews and weren't disappointed. They instantly made us feel welcome in this home away from home. We loved hiking in the area, either directly from the cottage or after a short drive to close-by locations. Monte Prato Fiorito and the area around Lago Scaffaiolo were our highlights. The antique market in Lucca or one of the other ancient Tuscan cities and a visit to the Chianti region also shouldn't be missed. After 10 days it was really hard to leave, but we will come back for sure.

Summary: Things we enjoyed.......the peace and quiet of this small hamlet, the stunning views of Tuscan villages on wooded hillside, the home from home feel of a cared for and loved cottage, the light reading area complete with an amazing collection of literature and maps, the outside patio areas giving both sun and shade, the ease of walking from the door along shaded tracks. We were happy not to go far and had arrived by train from Lucca with a taxi pre-booked from Bagni di Lucca. Laura and her family next door who look after the cottage are so friendly and helpful.

Summary: Its exactly as it looks and described on the website. The view from the terrace and bedroom is magnificent. On the day we arrived, food prepared by Laura, wine, and cake, it was something that we are not accustomed to self-catered holidays. The neighboring villages like Montefegatesi, Vetteglia, San Cassiano are not to be missed. The food in Bagni Di Luca, visits to Florence, Pisa, Portofino highly recommended. This was the first holiday in Italy after decades of holidaying in France. I must say we just loved it. People, food, wine and the beautiful towns and villages were superb. Already planning next holiday in neighboring Liguria.

Summary: We loved Il Metatino the minute we saw it. True, we arrived in the dark & the journey up from Bagni di Lucca was winding & ADVENTUROUS!! But the following morning in the sunshine it was a feast for the eyes. It's small & cosy with a great little cosy feel but we knew that when we booked. The views over the valley we weren't ready for & were simply breathtaking when we got up. We never got used to the amazing view, staggeringly beautiful & different every day. Laura from next door brought bread & there was a great welcome pack of wine etc. We spent the next 10 days driving around locally & getting into the Tuscan vibe. We'd planned loads of days out but there was so much in the local region we just about made it to Lucca & Pistoia. Both stunning cities & a lovely drive thru Chianti to get a flavour of it. Bagni di Lucca is a picturesque town with great places to eat & a lovely Conad Supermarket selling great fresh produce. The bread, cheeses & wines were to die for. The only problem at all for me was that at 6'5" I kept banging my head upstairs. Il Metatino was originally for chestnut roasting & upstairs was never designed as living accommodation. It's very cute but watch your head !! Anyway, it wudn't stop us going back & I just about got the low ceilings sorted in week 2 !! Laura & family next door treated us to a traditional pizza night cooked in their own bakery above the house. Never tasted pizza like it. So, overall we took away some amazing memories of rural Italy, that we'll never ever forget. A great holiday & great value for money. Gary & Marion

Summary: This cottage more than lived up to its description and exceeded our expectations - space, comfort, decor, ready supply of maps and books and other homely touches etc etc. We loved it. The cottage is located in a hillside hamlet and has fantastic views. It has lots of different areas to sit in (inside and out) so its easy to enjoy them. The garden offers a choice of sunny or shady areas to sit in and we found the house nice and cool to retreat back to after a day's sightseeing in the heat. The local Italian family who look after the property were warm, welcoming and generous. They live nearby so were on hand if needed but left us in complete privacy so we were able to totally relax. Indeed, this is a great place to escape the rat race and unwind. Bagni di Lucca, the local town, has supermarkets, shops and a small number of bars and restaurants. It also has a great swimming pool complex and wild swimmers may enjoy going a couple of miles upstream on the river that runs through the town. We enjoyed exploring nearby hilltop villages and also Lucca and Montacatini Terme which are less than an hour's drive away. We intended going to Pisa and the coast but ran out of time. We noticed that there is a train service from one of the other nearby towns which we will investigate next time. All in all this was just our cup of tea!

Summary: We have stayed in many self-catering properties over the years, but I can honestly say this was the best for its combination of superb qualities. It is in a beautiful location which, though quiet, is not really remote, with neighbouring properties and a well-stocked general store 10-15 minutes stroll away; it is extremely clean and well-maintained making it a pleasure to be inside if you have to be; it is equipped with everything you need and more, plus the bonus of a superb book and CD collection; and the welcome pack is the best I've ever seen. The neighbours who look after the cottage are a delight and made it clear they were there if we needed them. Having spent the previous week travelling alI the way from the north of England to Tuscany by train, we didn't want to venture far from the cottage and it was easy to relax and read, with a glass of Tuscan wine nearby, stopping occasionally to look out over the fantastic views. It really felt as though we were in a well-loved home and we feel privileged to have stayed at Il Metatina - we hope to return in the near future!

Summary: If you want peace and quiet surrounded by wonderful views this is the place to be! The cottage has been beautifully renovated inside and the outside space looks out over uninterrupted views of the countryside. The welcome pack here is the best we have ever experienced, including a delicious homemade lasagne and cake from the lovely Italian neighbours who look after the property. Despite the rural location Bagni di Lucca is only a short drive away with a supermarket and restaurants, plus many other fantastic towns and villages within easy reach by car or train. We would definitely recommend the cottage to anyone looking to get away from it all and experience rural Tuscany at its best. Sitting on the patio with a glass of Chianti as the sun sets over the hills is a must :) We will be back for sure!
