3 Bedroom House in Fort Valley

The historic Slate Hill Schoolhouse in Fort Valley started serving local farming families prior to the Civil War. However, the School House had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1871. Many local children attended between 1871 and the closing of the school in 1939. Attendance records from 1904-07 indicate that the children ranged in age from 7 to 18 years old, with a median age of 11.
A thorough renovation was completed in 2013, and the Slate Hill School House is now furnished and equipped to serve as the perfect place for a quiet and restorative getaway. Set in pastoral farmland, you can enjoy views of the ridges of Massanutten Mountain from the porch or the fire pit. From the other side of the house, you may on occasion see horses roaming inside the fences of Glenmont Farm across the way. There are several outdoor recreation options nearby, including many hiking trails in the George Washington National Forest and fishing at Passage Creek.
In the School House living room you'll find a travel display on the wall that includes a folded map of the dozens of hiking trails in the surrounding area. Just five miles south of the School House on Fort Valley Road, you’ll find the Fort Valley Post Office and the Fort Valley Country Store which sells gasoline, extra firewood, and other conveniences, including made-to-order deli sandwiches.
The School House is less than 30 minutes to Front Royal if you travel East on Route 55. And it's less than 30 minutes to Strasburg traveling West on Route 55. The historic districts of each town have restaurants, breweries, and points of interest that you might like to keep in mind for rainy days in particular. Strasburg has one of the biggest antique emporiums in the area.
If you're up for traveling 40 minutes or more, the family might enjoy Shenandoah Caverns. Across from the building entrance to the caverns, you'll find the one-of-a-kind "America on Parade" Museum. It's opened seasonally, and it houses an amazing collection of huge floats from major parades such as presidential inaugurals and the Pasadena Rose Parade. Within 30-45 minutes there are several sites for Civil War buffs, including the Cedar Creek Battlefield, Hupp's Hill, and Belle Grove. Also about 40 minutes away are the historic towns of Edinburg and Woodstock. The Edinburg Mill houses numerous collections on several levels that inform on life in the Shenandoah Valley during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
A note for potential guests:
T-Mobile and AT&T have cell signals in Fort Valley, but if your cell provider is Verizon, you will not get a good signal, or any signal at all. You'll want to connect your phone to the WiFi at the house to make calls and get an internet connection.
Enjoy a Shenandoah Schoolhouse Stay!

Summary: Very comfortable, clean & pleasant accommodations in a lovely setting. Excellent set up for our family, which was comprised of my husband and me, plus our daughter, son-in-law, their four year old daughter and gentle older lab mix dog. We were downstairs with our own bathroom, while our daughter and her family stayed upstairs, with a second bathroom. There was plenty of privacy for each party. Our hosts were immediately in touch with us with an offer of water, etc when the electricity went out during the day. We weren't in the house at the time and the electricity was restored within a short time, so there was never any problem. (We understand this happens in rural areas )The house is a drive from Shenandoah NP and towns with restaurants, but we were in no hurry, so that was OK. Washington National Forest is close by and looks beautiful and sparsely touristed. The next time we're in the Washington DC area we would definitely consider a return visit with hiking in the National Forest.

Summary: If one is seeking a rural retreat, then this wonderful property is perfect. Nestled in a valley surrounded by the Massanutten mountain, this historic converted school is beautifully maintained. It’s conveniently located near hiking/mountain biking trails as well as campgrounds in the nearby National Forest, and ATV trails if that’s your thing.Highly recommend!

Summary: It’s a nice little place for a small group to use as a home base to explore the area. Nothing fancy at all. Kitchen was what you’d expect in a mid range rental. Beds were fine. B The biggest drawback was the hvac. It was 79 outside and the AC couldn’t get the house below 73. I wouldn’t want to Be there in the heat of the summer.

Summary: The home was super clean and I didn’t feel like I needed to clean when I got there, which is sometimes the case. I cannot comment on nearby attractions as this was a quiet getaway for rest and relaxation. The area outside is smaller than expected since Ft Valley Road does cut through the green space at the bottom of the hill, but the view is lovely. The driveway is busy as there are multiple residences down that way, but this did not bother me. A wonderful covered porch is where I spent most of my time!

Summary: The Schoolhouse is a charming, historic building with picturesque views of mountains and meadows. Our three year old delighted in playing on the wide front porch, and counting wild turkeys in the field across the road. It was too warm when we stayed to use the fire-pit, but it would be a terrific place for a fire on a cooler evening. The AC worked great in the house, so we sheltered from 95 degree heat indoors mid-day. The house is beautiful in its bones, with artful decor echoing the schoolhouse history. It had a nice book collection for all ages, and lovely modern kitchen and baths. The house was spotless when we arrived (though we made the mistake of leaving bananas on the counter and one was chewed by a mouse overnight). Old country houses will have mice no matter what you do, so if you wish to enjoy a romantic old country home, just keep food in the cupboard space and not on the counter. Our mistake. We would definitely stay again. This was a peaceful, comfortable, clean and charming home in an epically beautiful location.
