Summary: My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this country villa, and we were extra surprised by the doting care provided by Jose and his wife. He made sure to check in with us regularly to make sure we did not have any issues with the house, and provided us with a very thorough tour of the house upon arrival. The house was super comfortable with plenty of space for large families to stay comfortably. The kitchen was very well supplied, and Jose invited us to eat any of the food that was already in the house including fresh and delicious apples he picked from his apple tree. This was a godsend since we did not have a chance to grocery shop before arriving and his apples were some of the best I have ever eaten. During our stay, we visited castles, Roman ruins, and Fatima. Jose gave us suggestions for regional attractions to visit as well and was very helpful in tracking down additional information for us. His wife was kind enough to track down literature in English to make it easier for us. Jose's hospitality was unlike anything I have ever experienced before while renting a vacation property, and he really made us feel welcome and special. He was a great ambassador for his country and fully embodied the genuinely kind and helpful nature we experienced from all of the Portuguese people we interacted with during our travels. While I learned some Portuguese before traveling to Portugal, my skills were limited at best. Jose was unbelievably patient with my limited Portuguese skills and the weird combination of Portuguese, Spanish, and English that I spoke. I am forever grateful for his patience and good humor and for Google Translate! If we make it back to Portugal again, I would definitely stay here again. As a possibly helpful tip for other travelers, we found that Google Maps provided the best and easiest routes to and from the property (and I recommend setting up Google Maps offline in case you lose cell connection). This was the case for traveling throughout the country. The GPS built into our car rental took us unnecessarily through some tight streets that were difficult to maneuver through.

Summary: We enjoyed our stay at the Casa da Passarinha near Soure, Portugal. José, the owner, was very helpful with information about seeing the local sites of Conímbriga, Coimbra and the Castle of Montemor-o-Velho. The Castle of Soure is in the nearby town as well, and the community of Soure is where the closest grocery stores and gas station are located. It takes a bit of maneuvering to get to the Casa da Passarinha, but it was well worth staying at a nice place surrounded by 17-acres of olive orchards and vineyards. It was helpful to use Google maps and save them on your device offline, and it also helps to have coordinates for wherever you may be going in the region too. We found the Portuguese people to be welcoming and hospitable overall, and definitely recommend this place to those planning on staying in central Portugal. Thanks again and obrigado!
