Summary: Mixed experience at Hotel Barcelona Universal. Prior to arrival, I sent three emails (two directly, one via Hotels.com) and only received one reply. The toilet didn't flush properly, and the bath-to-shower lever was broken. The TV remote had no back, and instead of replacing it, staff just changed the batteries. The in-room safe was locked on arrival and didn’t work properly even after staff intervention. The €16 continental breakfast felt overpriced, and Hotels.com offered it at €32 despite a solo booking. No non-slip bath mat—potential safety issue—and only wooden stirrers, no spoons, for drinks. The bathroom had a musty smell when the door was closed overnight, likely due to no window. Inside courtyard rooms are quieter but lack natural light, and open windows let in midges and cockroaches. One of three lifts was out of order. The minibar was very pricey. I was charged a €100 deposit and €6.25 per night tax (still not refunded). No English channels except Sky News. Some photos revealed holes in the bathroom—unsettling in today's climate. No instructions provided for Wi-Fi, air-con, or the safe. That said, housekeeping was excellent and prompt. The rooftop bar staff and the young man near the lift were friendly and welcoming. These issues are mostly minor but fixing them would greatly improve the stay for future guests.

Summary: One of the few places in Europe with actual working air conditioning. Staff was great lots of great restaurants nearby.

Summary: On arrival we were allocated the last available standard room which had no window. I am a little claustrophobic and despite there being a pretend window with a light behind it in the room we had to move. There were no superior rooms left either so we upgraded to a Privilege room which was superb. The change was made easily and the room was lovely with views across the city. So make sure to check when booking that you have a window if you want one! Bed and pillows were comfortable. Staff were all very happy to help with any query with a smile. Breakfast was varied and fantastic - highly recommend. Parking is under the hotel and quite tight to get in and out of but very convenient. Cocktail bar on the roof next to the pool is open until 8pm and has lovely views across the city. Location is 10 minute walk to Las Ramblas and the Port of Barcelona. Very convenient location.

Summary: Decently located to La Rambla. The hotel itself was very comfortable. It has an excellent staff. Every person we came into contact with was great! The room was nicely appointed. Every thing we needed! If I had any negatives it would be that the hallways are very noisy. The doors close loudly and you can hear every conversation people have walking down the hall. I’m not sure anything can be done about that. It didn’t really bother our sleep.

Summary: So I booked this hotel and it said free parking as a perk for Platinum status with Hotels.com. Got there to find there was no parking. I found the lady at the desk very dismissive of any support I asked for. Also, I had left my wife in the car as I was expecting to park - I was made to fill out all of the details on an iPad which was not working well & kept typing the wrong letters and wouldn’t delete. I asked 4 times for help and wasn’t given any. Then - I was made to take the iPad out to the car to get my wife to sign - even though I had asked if we could do this when she actually made it into the hotel. There is a way of making people feel welcome at a hotel - and this wasn’t it. So clearly Hotels.com and the hotel need to clarify what they advertise as options between them - as I’m sure the blame will just turn into finger pointing. However, being supportive and helpful to a customer is the first bit. A male employee on the door guided to a parking area - which was a cost I handn’t factored under the circumstances. There were other hotels I would have chosen if I’d known this was going to be the case. Room was fine. Area was ok.

Summary: Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Hotel is in a good location with a metro station directly outside and a 10 minute walk from Las Ramblas and the port. Rooms were a little dated but had everything needed for the stay including an iron. The view from the rooftop is stunning, especially at sunset. Don’t be fooled by the size of the pool though it is quite small, we didn’t use it but would be OK to cool off. Would definitely return and have recommended to others since our return.
