4 Bedroom House in Glengarriff, Glengariff

Mistover is nearly 100 years old. Originally the local schoolmaster's house, it was imaginatively restored and extended in 1980 by an artist, the owner, who is my aunt, who uses it as her country retreat. I have been holidaying in Mistover since I was very young. Its my favorite place. The rooms are quietly furnished in traditional country style. Mistover is not a typical holiday house.
It has two acres of gardens and woods, straddling a small stream (dry in a hot summer), situated in Glengarriff Woods, one of Ireland's National park and nature reserves, with a magnificent view across a valley to a curtain of mountain peaks.
There is little traffic as the road serves only a few local farms. In the distance cars can occasionally be seen making the climb to Barley Lake, a beauty spot saddled up in the mountains.Mistover is equidistant from Bantry & Kenmare, both 14 miles away.
This is the very heart of West Cork, the choice of its mild climate, unhurried beauty, and multitude of quiet coves, with the Ring of Beara, immediately adjacent and the better-known Ring of Kerry, half an hour away.
Mistover can accommodate a maximum number of 6-7 guests. The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, toilet and walk-in airing cupboard. There is also a farmhouse-style dining room, with woodstove and TV. Nearby is a sitting room with open fireplace, as well as a spacious modern kitchen with a breakfast bar, oil-fired Raeburn stove, gascooker, microwave and fridge / freezer.
A small conservatory lies off the dining room, and there is a garage, with access from the kitchen.
The first floor comprises three bedrooms; Bedroom 1 with a double bed, wood stove and TV, Bedroom 2 with 2 single beds and Bedroom 3 with a large single bed. There is also a spacious bathroom with bath, shower cabinet, toilet and bidet on this floor.
Bedroom 4 is located on the second floor, with 1 single bed for children in this large room, with a wash basin.
Mistover has central heating throughout, a washing machine, telephone, TV and WiFi a herb garden and beautiful, clear, spring water from it's own deep well.
Some visitors to Mistover are content to relax and enjoy the garden, nothing more energetic than exploring the varied shrubs and trees, or preparing a barbecue. If it rains the house has many rooms and comforts as well as books. There are a variety of forest, woodland and riverside walks, and 14 minutes by footpath to idyllic river bathing. The local village of Glengarriff is through the forest, 2.5 miles away, with post office, village shops and sea bathing.
A few minutes more bring you to a secluded sandy cove. Further away lie a variety of sandy beaches. There is every facility from magnificent golf courses to memorable eating facilities, in local pubs or 5 star restaurants.
The nearest airports are: KERRY (Farranfore Airport), and CORK city Airport.

Summary: My husband and I, my sister and adult nephew loved our stay. Very comfortable home with lots of history. Beautiful paintings on the walls by the owner. Darling attic bedroom with amazing view. The area is one of a kind. In the nature preserve. Great swimming hole down the road. Cute town of Glengarriff. Lots to do in the area. Close to Bantry and Kenmare. And various peninsula drives.

Summary: Mistover is a precious place that oozes with charm, creativity, and the loving energy of the owner Kathleen and her niece Grace. The home is very spacious with a unique and delightful floorplan that was fun to explore and made me smile everyday. The sun porch was my favorite spot -- cozy and inviting and a perfect place for breakfasts or any meal, coffee/tea breaks, or for just sitting and looking out at the many trees and wild grasses on the property and the butterflies, bees, and birds making the best of it all. This home is exceptionally comfortable. I've stayed in various locations around the Glengarriff area over the years, but this was by far the best. Thanks so much!

Summary: This is a beautiful, charming home in a superb setting amidst the gorgeous Glengarriff forest park. Close enough to town (10 minutes) to ensure proximity to restaurants and shops; far enough from town to allow guests to luxuriate in the solitude and beauty of the forest and the house's own lovely gardens. Moreover, the owner was accessible and helpful, and the price was eminently reasonable given the quality of the home and setting. One cautionary note: if you're obsessed with having the most modern of kitchen or bathroom amenities, this house is not for you. It's an older home, meticulously maintained, but not full of technological marvels. What it does offer is quiet, privacy and beauty. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Summary: We fell in love with this wonderful secluded house with all its history. It is not the Ikea furnished tiny pristine catalogue house, but moreover a generous house with a wonderful charming character, which let us feel at home, the moment we entered it. On rainy days it has ample space to cook in the kitchen, with wonderful old cookbooks provided by the house. Or it lets you enjoy privacy on the other two floors with windows overlooking the garden and the valley. Our daughter discovered the top den as her "writer's den" and music room. We also enjoyed the wonderful garden, also a paradise for children. The house has an inspirational character. One feels surrounded by history without missing the modern amenities like WiFi. Depending on your style you can even feel extra privileged by not having cell phone connection (which you could get if you walk 200m up the road or sometimes even in the den). We greatly enjoyed our week in "Mistover" and would come back any time to recharge in this tranquil environment.

Summary: My wife and I were fortunate to stay at Mistover for a week in August of 2018. After quite the drive from Dublin we were welcomed by Mistover, a warm, cozy and peaceful home far from the summer tourist hoards. This home is not the usual stark Euro accommodation that we are all used to, it is a home with a long history full of warmth, charm and lovely artwork. My wife loved the gourmet kitchen with everything that we needed to prepare scrumptious meals from the many wonderful cookbooks. I loved the two acres of gardens for wandering in quiet meditation, some areas are beautifully groomed and some left wonderfully natural. The home is about four kilometers from the small village of Glengariff with its charming high street, welcoming pubs and even a small grocery store, Banfry is only another sixteen kilometers down the road where everything that you could possibly need is available. The home has satellite Television for the older televisions, which we never used because we preferred to hear the surrounding cows and sheep braying on the farm next door. Unfortunately there is no phone or internet access and with children and aging parents at home that was a challenge but Glengariff has internet access in some of the pubs so internet is accessible fairly nearby. We were both sad to leave Mistover, my wife cried, truth be told I shed a tear myself. Many thanks to Kathleen and Grace for being so wonderful! Joseph and Shari Stachura
