Welcome to one of the most unique vacation opportunities in the world. Only at Reef Watch do you get a driver and guide for the duration of your stay.
Hubert, our caretaker, will treat you like a king and a friend at the same time. He will enable you to experience Jamaica like a native and learn first hand what beautiful, kind people there are in Jamaica. The cuisine, sights, sounds, and people of our sleepy fishing village, Scarlet Hall, are part of the Reef Watch experience. Sit back and listen to the locals speaking their native tongue, Patois, while music from the village drifts through the air. The barrier reef is just offshore and will provide you with fish, conch and lobster to complete your authentic Jamaican meals.
Our secluded grounds include fruit bearing trees and plenty of shade, patio space, and a spacious observation deck for star gazing and sunbathing. You will return home a changed person with thoughts of a return trip.
Immersion tourism: Reef Watch is as far from the typical all inclusive Jamaican resorts as you can get. Guests are immersed in the culture, sights and sounds of our village while living amongst the Jamaican people. The adventure includes authentic meals, secluded beaches, and a guide to bring it all to life. We have plenty of sun and shade on the property. Guests can experience the sights of the north shore of Jamaica before returning to the solitude of Reef Watch.
Hubert James: The best part of Reef Watch is the people of our village, Scarlet Hall. In particular, Hubert, our guide and driver is the cornerstone of the trip. He lives directly behind our home, and he knows the north shore down to every detail. His knowledge base and easy going personality will enhance your vacation. Traveling to the attractions allows Hubert to fill you in on the details of the terrain,villages and people as you pass them on the roads. He will introduce you to his family and friends and he often knows the store and restaurant managers. If you like, Hubert will cook real Jamaican dishes for you in the Reef Watch kitchen. Hubert is an accomplished spear fisherman, so your meals may include fresh fish, lobster, crab, conch and octopus.
Attractions: Scarlet Hall is located close to many popular attractions. These include Dunn's River Falls, Martha Brae River rafting, and the Luminous Lagoon. You can visit desolate beaches or explore a farm in the nearby hills. Snorkeling, SCUBA diving and spearfishing are available. Many guests make overnight trips to Negril to enjoy some fine dining or live music. We can recommend a place to stay. Montego Bay and its shops and restaurants are less than 30 miles away.

Summary: We stayed the first couple of days in Negril in a resort. Honestly, the resort it was meh. The next couple of days we spent with Hubert in his village. It wasn’t a resort experience if that is what you want, but he took us to the grocery store, taught us how to play Loodie, introduced us to his family and friends , cooked fresh caught octopus curry , took us to a quiet beach, taught us how to spearfish, etc! I am sure I am forgetting some of the other amazing things we experienced. Also, he let us chill and gave us some space when we were tired after a long day at the beach. I will be back! Thanks for the amazing experience!

Summary: The House is in the middle of nowhere. You can do nothing there without the Driver. But Hubert, the Driver is 24h standby. Hubert is a very good Driver, friendly, a good Chef to prepare Breakfast or Dinner and a good Guide as well. We had a very nice stay there for 3 Nights. Thanks a lot - the 5 Germacians

Summary: We just loved our stay here. Hubert was simply amazing and became part of our family during our stay. He took such good care of us and guided us appropriately based on our preferences. I will recommend this place highly and have already done so to my friends and family.

Summary: This is a poverty stricken village of about 500 wonderful people. There is trash everywhere and the property dogs have fleas, ticks and tape worms, which was a bit troublesome for me. But, Hubert, his friends and his family are all so lovely and we left feeling like family. There was a lot of time we found ourselves in the company of little Jaheem ( Hubert’s grandson), which was a complete joy to us, but I can see where others could be irritated by this. The house is old and only clean on the surface, (clean sheets and towels), but again, my husband and I were not bothered by this. Be sure you want the “ real” Jamaica if you rent this space. As a result your life will be enriched by what you’ve seen, learned, and the new friends you will have made, but expect to sacrifice the luxury of an upscale stay at Ocho Rios or Negril. You won’t be disappointed if your expectations are right. Also, the driving in Jamaica is insane and having Hubert as a driver is priceless. We budgeted 25% to tip Hubert, which amounted to $400. However, we left feeling a little guilty and wished we could have paid him $100 per day. He’s worth every penny of it. The “real” Jamaica will forever be in our hearts.

Summary: The overview of this place really doesn't do it, or the staff, justice. The property itself is lovely. The screened-in veranda is glorious for the cooler evenings and the AC inside is great for late afternoons after a day of adventuring. The kitchen is fully stocked with coffee makers, pots and pans, utensils, some basic seasonings, plates and glasses...everything you need to enjoy meals in. Hubert James knows all the good restaurants for any meals on the town. He picked us up at the airport and was instantly the best guide we could have asked for. He helped us get settled in after a quick trip to the grocery store and he and his family helped us feel welcome and at ease. We stayed for four nights and during that time we went rafting on the Martha Brae river, took a trip to the Luminous Lagoon at night, ate delicious seafood at Herby's by the Lagoon, and explored the Ocho Rios area to visit the Irie Blue Hole and nearby caves. Hubert and his son Javian cooked us an amazing jerk chicken dinner one night and showed us how to prepare the dishes as well. As someone who loves to cook, the cooking lessons were truly invaluable! We had a good balance of tourist time out and about and downtime at the property. Hubert and his family kept us company and the conversations and chill time with them are some of the best moments of the trip. As travelers who deal with some health issues that affect our energy levels, we also spent a decent amount of time just relaxing and taking it easy. Hubert and his family checked in on us to make sure we weren't bored (just resting!) and were so caring and accommodating. Also, Hubert really does know absolutely everyone in the village and at many of the attractions and his relationships also meant we felt extra welcome and had an extra good time. Staying at Reef Watch is not like staying at an all-inclusive resort. And that's one of the best parts. To be sure, big-name companies and hotels provide jobs in the community and an overall boost to the national economy and they can be lovely. But spending money on local tourism endeavors and at local businesses helps ensure that more of that money stays in the hands of the people you meet along the way and ripples out to their supply chains and the local community. Summary: My son told me this was the best vacation we have ever taken. This was because we got to thoroughly experience authentic Jamaican life. The weather was not great. It rained every day and was cold by Jamaican standards. Hubert made our trip. Hubert picked us up at the airport. We stopped at a grocery store on the way to Reef Watch. Hubert led the shopping effort and helped us pick traditional Jamaican food. He cooked for us or took us to local restuarants. Our first day he took us around the village and introduced us to his family and neighbors. We played ludie and dominos with locals. Hubert's son quickly bonded with my son. Hubert drove us anywhere we wanted to go. Hubert knows many of the guides at natural attractions. Thus, we always got an extra special tour. This is a great property for families or those looking to party in Jamaica. Hubert will take care of you. In addition, the property is somewhat centrally located on the northern shoreline. Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are both easy to get to via car.

Summary: We had such an amazing 10 days at Reef Watch! Hubert is truly the heart and soul of this place and shares his time, stories and country with you in order to give the guests a truly unique experience. The house is nice...AC is wonderful after a long hot day. We loved having the dogs and cats around to spoil...we always miss our pets on vacation so it was nice to have some furry friends! We loved meeting all the characters in Scarlett Hall...the games of lootie at Althea's...wood carving with Cheeco...Javian making us breakfast...little Jaiem snuggles, high fives and sneaking him green candy (his favorite)! As a single mom traveling with 2 teenagers I felt very safe. Hubert and Javian were always there to answer any question, take us where we needed to go, and offer fantastic suggestions, converstion and plenty of laughs. My son LOVED spearfishing with them and they went many times. I felt so relieved because I knew Hubert would take good care of him. It was such fun to see them walking down the beach with their "haul" and then Hubert would whip up an amazing lunch on the beach with their catch...talk about a fresh meal! The Reef Watch experience is just that...an experience. It is not a cookie cutter, all-inclusive, could be anywhere in the world...it is Jamaica, a true Jamacian village! It might not be for everyone...but it sure was what we were looking for. Sandie was so easy to work with and welcomed all my questions. We had a truly fantastic time. Before we even left my kids were asking to come back. After saying good bye to Hubert and Javian at the airport my kids both said they could not look at them or they would have cried...that says more than any of these other words can...this trip ended up being about friendship not just beautiful beaches! (but there were plenty of those too!) Thank you Sandie and Andrew for sharing your home with the rest of us. And thank you to Hubert and Javian for being...you! Summary: Our family had a great vacation at Reef Watch! We stayed for 7 days -Jan.1-8. Our group of 5 ranged from 15 to 86 yrs. old and everyone had a fabulous time! The Reef Watch is exactly as described but the care and service provided by Hubert were above all expectations. The locals at Scarlett Hall were friendly and made us feel welcomed. Javian, his son was always around and willing to help out. Rex is awesome – you have to tell Hubert to bring you up the mountain to see him. His attitude and wisdom are inspiring. He gave us some of his bananas, coconuts, and oranges. We went on day trips every day. These included horseback riding on the beach and in the ocean, the great houses and Wed. market day. We went swimming at night in the Luminous Lagoon – it was such an awesome experience. We played Lootie at nights with Hubert and the locals. Hubert took us to a beautiful secluded beach that was ideal to go spearfishing and snorkeling. He taught the boys how to spearfish. Catching an octopus was the thrill of a lifetime for the 15 yr. old. Hubert cooked a lunch for us on the beach with the fresh catch of the day. Hubert and the boys caught a barracuda, lobster and octopus. It was a perfect day!! We had so much fun. Hubert is amazing, He knows everyone and is so knowledgeable about this area. We had a scare when the 86 yr old in our group had to be rushed to the hospital. Thank heavens for Hubert! He got us there swiftly and did not rest until she was released (at midnight) and back at Reef Watch. He is a kind and caring person who will look after any situation that might arise with patience and diligence. He became a dear friend and we would recommend Reef Watch to anyone who wants to experience the best of Jamaica!
