Karaka cottage was built for apple pickers in the 1950s.It has been carefully renovated, retaining it's simplicity and natural charm while adding contemporary comforts. The apple orchard has been transformed into a haven of organic fruit trees, vegetable gardens and regenerating native coastal forest. It's a great place to relax into the rhythm of the tides, the wildlife, the weather, yet still be only 5 minutes drive from cafés and restaurants in the coastal village of Mapua.
A large covered verandah and private garden lead to the estuary shore. The outdoor bath is beautiful in the morning with the sun streaming through the trees, and amazing on a clear night with a starry sky.
We have five acres of organic garden, fruit trees and regenerating native bush. You can choose your favourite quiet spot to read, relax, or have a picnic. It is a perfect place to enjoy the pleasures of a bach holiday with good books, board games, barbecue, hammock, and endless views to gaze at.
Karaka Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the Nelson/Tasman region. There are so many options for day trips: for hiking there is a choice of three National Parks (Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes and Abel Tasman), for swimming there are beautiful golden sand beaches and rivers, for cycling there is a huge variety of trails, and for gourmands there is endless foraging for wine, artisan food and craft beer .

Summary: The location is simply exquisite and the accomodation is cute with a retro vibe, clean, has everything you need to cook, plenty of space to enjoy the sun, keep warm by the fire, watch the bird life and admire the ocean. If you're looking for piece and tranquility, easy access to small villages, cycling, walking and the amazing food and wine region this is the place to stay.

Summary: The cottage is very comfortable and well located for exploring the Tasman district, however we found ourselves not wanting to leave. We enjoyed the beauty and the tranquillity, watching the slow creep of the tide over the mudflats and all the wading birds. Views from every window and great spots to sit outside under the majestic gum trees.

Summary: Cute little cottage in an idyllic setting. Our family of five spent a few day in the area en route to Abel Tasman. Elspeth was very helpful and the cottage was very clean and tidy. Great area for exploring and we loved the Mapua wharf for morning coffees and dinners in the evening. Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay.

Summary: Fabulous location and a cozy cottage to spend time in. The Karaka cottage has beautiful views across the Waimea inlet and numerous places to sit and catch the sun. Elspeth was great to deal with and the meal box is highly recommended!

Summary: Wanting a relaxing weekend I think we found the perfect location. Sitting in the sun on the deck enjoying the amazing local food and wine what a way to unwind. The cottage is wonderful and we will be back.

Summary: This cottage is absolutely adorable. Privately nestled amongst towering eucalyptus trees, a bright, sun drenched space with such beautiful birdsong. A small cottage that has been carefully furnished to provide ample space, tastefully decorated with bold colours against the natural wooden features. There are several seating areas placed around the property so you can enjoy the sun and scenery at any time of the day. From the east side you are met with watery views of the inlet and mountains on the horizon. There is outdoor bath tucked away to relax in whenever you please, possible my favourite aspect of all. We only had the pleasure of staying a single night, but we are leaving this morning feeling truly rejuvenated. We booked the cottage to have a night off from our 16 month old son (for the first time) and celebrate our anniversary. It was a perfect space for us to have some much needed down time - we almost did not want to go to our dinner reservation and just stay in for the entire night. It would also be a perfect space for a larger group/family, there is vast outdoor space for the little ones to run around. Not to mention some geese, sheep and horses on the way in to the property! Our stay has been during winter and we were super cosy with the fire going, with there being an option of a heat pump too. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could possibly need and when we were missing a coffee plunger Elspeth (host) was away to get one for us, quick as a flash! I couldn't recommend this glorious little haven anymore if i tried! So thrilled with my choice to spend our precious alone time here. I'm actually propped up in the bed now with a coffee admiring the views from the bedroom, writing this review. We haven't even left yet and are already making plans to return with the children some time soon. Thank you Elspeth x
