Positive: This Chambre D'Hote is absolutely stunning. We loved the history of the building - it was originally the bakery which supplied the abbey at the bottom of the hill, and it has been beautifully renovated, in a style that is so quintessentially French. It really is beyond pretty. The owners are absolutely delightful and gave us a very warm welcome - hosting people doesn't seem to be just a job, it seems to be more a way of life. Our room was quite small - a shower cubicle and small separate toilet inside the room provided all of the basics, but the real draw of this room, is that it's the only one with direct access onto a very lovely roof terrace. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't so good, so we didn't get to make the most of it, but in hot weather it must be glorious. Breakfast was lovely - typically French with excellent coffee, juice, croissants, yoghurt, ham & cheeses - served in a gorgeous dining room. There is a living room/salon which is available for guests to use, too.
Negative: The chambre d'hote cannot really be accessed by a car, unless you are driving something like a Smart car - I think even a mini would struggle - as it's located deep in the centre of Caunes Minervois and the roads are extremely narrow, with twists and turns. We gave up and parked at the bottom of the hill in the Abbey car park. If you have mobility issues, the location would be a problem as the hill to the B&B is steep - and once inside, the stairs are very steep. However, if you are OK with all of this, we'd definitely recommend L'Ancienne Boulangerie as it is beautiful. (The hosts do have a dog, so might be worth knowing if you don't like dogs or are allergic to them. Equally worth knowing, the dog was extremely well behaved, and although we are not dog people, we didn't find him to be an issue at all. He's also as handsome as the property!)
