Escape to the "Skipping Stone" cabin on the Chicago Bay of Lake Superior. This historical property is a short walk from the cement Hovland Dock that was built in 1905. This beautiful piece of property was the homestead chosen by the first settlers here in 1888. The first settlers then named Hovland after their home village in Norway; they ran a hotel and store here for those arriving to the North Shore by ship.
Imagining the history that happened here while staying in this rustic little cabin is magical. It is a perfect home base for your Northwoods adventures. There is nothing better than sleeping and eating steps from the majestic great lake. This cabin is perfect for two but can accommodate four people in tight quarters (best to keep the sofa bed closed when not in use). There is wifi, but it may not be optimal for working/zoom calls. Also EV charging is not possible at this cabin. Location:

☆ We require guests to sign a rental agreement which will be sent after booking. This agreement must be read, signed and returned within 48 hours or cancellation for a full refund can be requested within 48 hours. Please read cancellation policy.
☆ There is no Wi-Fi in the surrounding areas; check-in instructions will be sent to you ahead of time with the house Wi-Fi password and lock box code. Please write these down!
☆ One dog allowed with a $50 pet fee. Please read contract carefully to agree to specific rules:
1. Dogs must be leashed at all times and not run free. To stay pet friendly we cannot have dogs disrupt the other cabin on the property or neighbors walking their dogs on the road.
2. Dog waste must be picked up and will result in using part of the deposit as a cleaning fee; our neighborhood relies on Lake Superior as our water source and we cannot have excess bacteria run-off
3. Dogs may not be on bed or sofa without a covering because of future guest allergies; evidence of this will result in keeping partial deposit for additional cleaning.
☆ No more than four guests and no more than one car on the property at one time
☆ No ATVs or dirt bikes allowed on the property.
☆ Drinking water will be supplied to comply with the Cook County regulations regarding homes that water drawn from Lake Superior be labeled as not potable. Faucet water is treated and can be used for washing.
☆ We are a cabin in the Northwoods and next to water. While we do have pest control monitor our home, there are mosquitos, spiders and flies in the summer so bringing bug spray is recommended. We have never seen a mouse in the house, but their presence is possible. Also the area is home to moose, wolves, bears, river otters, deer, fox and coyotes; please respect the wildlife by keeping all food and garbage indoors and monitor dogs closely.
☆ There is a second dwelling on the property; a 3-bedroom cabin. It can be an additional rental. There may be other guests renting this small cabin during your stay. Both cabins share the main driveway but have their own parking and lake shoreline. Guests will be required to respect the signs regarding the boundaries between these two cabins.

Summary: We had a wonderful long weekend at the Skipping Stone cabin. Off the path enough to feel secluded but close enough to sights in the area that it didn't feel out of the way! Cabin is cute, well maintained and the hosts are exceptional! We look forward to renting the other larger cabin on the property in the near future!

Summary: I took my 3 teenage daughters up North for one last Hurrah before school starts. We were pleasantly surprised with our stay being that the cabin is studio size and tight quarters. The inside of the cabin is aesthetically pleasing and smart considering the limited space. It was cozy and comfortable. Everything we could need was available to us. Being on the shore was amazing. The beach was quiet besides the waves rolling in, the fire pit was huge, and there were mosquitos but tolerable with bug spray, citronella, and keeping your legs covered. We spent a lot of time at the bonfire and my girls even got in the water. It's situated on the bay, so it felt safe and was warm enough. I would come back here again and again, thank you so much!!

Summary: We loved this cute little cabin! Really clean, orderly, and more stocked than any small cabin we've ever stayed in! Very nice small touches like coffee, waffle mix, etc showed the hosts really cared. The biggest asset is the proximity to the lake. Waking up to the lake shore waves was amazing! The only thing that people should know about is the mosquitos - which obviously has nothing to do with the cabin. It's part of the north woods experience and truly unavoidable no matter where you stay. We would LOVE to come back! Had an amazing experience!

Summary: My family and I had a wonderful weekend in this private cabin on the shore of Lake Superior. There was plenty of space for my husband and I and our 2 children. The property was clean and very well maintained. The property manager was quick to respond with any questions we had. There are a ton of beautiful outdoor activities to do while exploring this beautiful part of the country. The sounds of the waves outside our cabin was so relaxing! We look forward to coming back and spending more time here!
