A little about the area:
The hilltop traditional village of Casciana boasts 250 inhabitants, a busy bar, and a basic shop which can supply all essentials including fresh bread. The bar owner will also often cook in request. This is a taste of real Italy, living in an authentic historical village which is set amongst the mountains, and surrounded by wonderful views.
The village is around 3kms to the closest restaurant and after this point there is a good choice of restaurants and bars. The closest larger village is Camporgiano a five minute drive away with a couple of restaurants, pizzerias and bars; inhabited castle; supermarket, pharmacy, small Monday morning market. There is also a train station for easy exploration of the entire area.
The village of Piazza al Serchio is also only a 5 min drive away - across the river, and all facilities can be found here including traditional local shops, a small Tuesday morning market when the village comes alive, a river, and some bars and eating places.
This area has a real feel of the true Italy.
In terms of larger towns, there is Castelnuovo the busy market town which is 20 mins or so away, the wonderful mediaeval town of Barga, renowned for its music, art, cathedral and great dining is 45 minutes away and the fully walled city of Lucca, which is a must for a day out, 1 hr 15 mins or so. Here you can meander or cylce on the intact walls, designer shop til you drop, go to a concert, enjoy a daily opera recital or just people watch in the grand piazzas.
Closer to hand and a 15 minute or so drive is the ancient fortress of Verrucole with its stunning views of the entire area, and it's interactive museum. Close to here you will also find the Buffardello park where you can tree climb and zip wire and enjoy various challenges in the forest - suitable for both children and the most adventurous of adults.
If adventure is your thing then you may also wish to visit the Parco Levegliese and sample rock climbing or river canyoning around a 45 minute drive away, and you may wish to combine this with a tour of the fascinating wind caves a further 15 minutes on.
This is an ideal opportunity to stay in a mountain village house, with fantastic views, and experience the real Italy!

Summary: A lovely, comfortable and well equipped property in a quiet hilltop village with stunning views all round. We enjoyed the pool, especially the kids. It was a difficult to find the property on arrival despite the instructions provided, these could have more detailed and an accompanying map would have been helpful. We ended up parking our car in the village for the week as the narrow and steep road up to the property was challenging.

Summary: We just got back from our trip to this beautiful home. First off, it was just like the pictures. The house looks really great and the amenities are perfectly suited for a (larger) family. With 4 bedrooms (with double or two single beds) and three bathrooms, there is plenty of space to go around. The kitchen is adequate and fully loaded with all the utensils you need. The pool outside was on the small side, but it was big enough for our three youngest to spend most of the time in when we were at the home. Around the house there are plenty of sitting areas. Our favorite one was the one next to the pool overlooking hills and villages, in the morning, between 9 and 10 AM, with a good cup of coffee. The peace and quiet are just amazing. That's also the only downpart. Although there are things to do in the vincinity (please go to Lago di Gramolazzo, about a 20 minute drive by car, beautiful emerald green lake to go swimming), if you want to see some sights, you need to drive a bit (just under two hours for Pisa (must see), just over one hour for Lucca (nice town square) and over two hours to go to Florence (beautiful!)). Grocery shopping is doable at a small shop about 10 minutes out (just opposite of Davy's Bar & Restaurant, great food, reasonable prices!), but it's better to go to a superstore at about half an hour drive. The prices are better and you have more choice. PS: The wifi isn't that good, be sure to have a good data plan :) All in all, we loved it!

Summary: We really enjoyed our stay in this house and would like to book it again. Only thing to optimize is the clean-ness of the pool. The first days the water was unclear, but when we called the owner he came to check/adjust it next day.

Summary: This is a beautiful home in a beautiful spot in a small village with 360 degree views of mountains and valleys. We loved our time there. We used it as a base to visit numerous places (Cinque Terre, Lucca, Carrara to name a few). The village is quiet, the neighbors friendly, and the home fit our needs. The pool was a nice addition to cool off after exercise or sitting in the hot sun. We would return there in a heartbeat

Summary: We very much enjoyed our week in Casciana. The house is superbly situated at the top of the village with inspiring views in every direction, and from the bedrooms particularly. We enjoyed breakfasts out on the patio in the morning sun, set in the well kept garden with its olive trees, while planning our walks in the Alpi Apuane and watching the passing swifts. Most of the walks we chose this time took us a few kilometres back down the valley to Castelnuovo and up into the hills from there, but always an easy and attractive drive, and we tended to shop at the well stocked supermarket on the main road not far away at Camporgiano. We found the house had everything we needed: the kitchen compact, easy to use and well equipped; and bedrooms comfortable and spacious. The weather could still be cool overnight in May, but not unpleasantly so and just an extra blanket sometimes at night did the trick. Very much looking forward to returning for another visit.

Summary: Absolutely gorgeous place, the house was immaculate, clean, well equipped and a delight to stay in. The garden has a wonderful selection of different seating areas to view all the amazing surrounding scenery - in the evening we particularly liked the view across the valley to the hilltop villages and the mountains. The pool was lovely on the hot steamy days and the under cover eating area was great for watching the thunderstorms! The owners were extremely helpful and friendly and provided good advice. the local shop was excellent for essentials including fresh bread and coffee. Very easy to get to Lucca by train from Piazza del Serchio (only a 10 minute drive). Would highly recommend this house if you are looking for somewhere in a beautiful setting in the hills of Tuscany with all the modern conveniences including good Wi-Fi . Thank you for a fabulous week.

Summary: Perfect place. Beautifull view, private garden and with many places to sit and relax. You can always find shadow or sun. Nice and clean pool. The house was clean and had all you needed. In the area there was several good hiking places and a lot off nice villages to see. There will be some driving, but there is a lot to see on the way, so it's okay. We went to Monte carlo one day, on a winetour with Elena. A local guide we booked before we came. The owners recomended some hikingareas, when we came, and they where perfect. It is a place we would like to visit again

Summary: Very nice house, very nice garden with lots of places to sit and lounge. Very nice view. The interior of the house is very nicely decorated and the house has everything you need. Plenty to do in the area (hking in the Apuan Alps, little towns like Castiglione, Fornovolasco, Barga and bigger towns like Lucca and Pisa and Florence, and of course sunshine and good food). Owners were friendly and helpful. Nearest bigger town is Castelnuovo (20 minutes), you can get hiking and touring itiniraris at the local tourist office there.. For cheap groceries, shop at Lidl (Aula or Lucca) on your way over.
