Positive: Monsanto is truly a place to visit and I wonder how this village ever came to be. Loads of history and charm and rusticness everywhere. Our accommodation, which was novel in itself ( low doors, sloped wooden beamed ceilngs & whitewashed stone walls) added so much character to this place. The housekeping couple who showed us in where so sweet and caring. It was raining cats & dogs and by the time we found the property we were soaked. They quickly got the wood fire going and showed up repeatedly at the door with more firewood and to check on us! Thankyou! There were tons of blankets for the beds and the kitchen had some hi end cooking equipment ( that could use instruction manuals) and loads of hot water. When the sun came out we went out onto the patio and enjoyed some wine as the sun was setting - fantastic views.

Negative: Monsanto is truly a wonderful place to visit, however the directions to find the apartment ( especially in the pouring rain) were not easy to follow particularly when you are focused on walking on cobbled paths with uneven steps. Trying to look around to see a fountain ( which isn't spraying water up) or a cross (which is tucked up against the building on a blind corner and doesn't jump out at you when you walk by) meant we constantly wondered if we were going the correct way. I understand in pedestrian only lanes it's hard to describe however adding distance, like from the square go up the lane approximately 60 footsteps where you'll see a store on the right called Cafe Monsantino, carry on past for approximately another 70 footsteps taking your first right and continue for approximately 230 footsteps - (downhill with actual steps) where you will see on the left in the stone work a basin fountain with water running into it and immediately the path does a 'Y' - stone cross is on your left - keep left ( don't turn right) and go another approximately 35 footsteps and then to your right you will see a short path that has a Red door at the end 15 footsteps. This is the apartment door - there is no sign or number. See my pictures. Giving distances will help immensely. So, all in all, with the help of a kind young lady and some good fortune, we found this treasure and would highly recommend staying here. Again, the housekeeping couple were fantastic and couldn't be more hospitable, which was very reassuring. 1 footstep = 2 ft approximately GL

Positive: This is an incredibly charming house built into the rocks of Monsanto. it's decorated in a retro style and I appreciated the touches like an old fashioned sewing machine and old fastioned fridge. The beds were loaded with multiple layers of warm quilts and were super comfortable. Enjoyed looked through the old portuguese books. Favorite things were the cat that visited the terrace, the friendly caretakers that live beside the location, and we were welcomed with a wood-burning stove that was warm and cozy. There is a small terrace with a small door to access it (door tto terrace requires you to stoop to access terrace but the atmosphere and view is worth it!). The terrace is charming and has an incredible view over the village and over the landscape. NOTE: the house doesn't have a house number so I'm attaching a pic of the door. The owner sends a very clear description of where to park and how to get to the house.

Negative: The bathroom and shower are very small but that didn't bother me. The second bed is downstairs and the steps are pretty steep. It was not a problem but be aware of that if you have limited mobility for stairs.

Positive: excellent house in Monsanto , nice balcony which can enjoy the sunset well equipped kitchen you can park the car in a square (outside the city) and walk around 8min to the house host is very responsive and give you instructions how to arrive the house Grandma and Grandpa are very nice, they made the fire for us keeping warm

Negative: only 1 thing is a bit difficult to find the house.

Positive: We loved our two nights in this cute and authentic granite cottage. The little veranda was fabulous especially for early morning coffee and sundowners. The village itself is exceptional and being there in early mornings and evenings meant we could explore without other tourists about.

Negative: The bathroom is pretty basic but plenty hot water.
