9 Bedroom House in Baiao, Mesão Frio

Casa do Monte is a beautifully-restored 18th century Portuguese manor house surrounded by sweeping valleys and stunning hills. Situated in the village of Teixeiró, near Mesão Frio in the heart of the Lower Corgo area of the Port Wine Route, it is ideally-located to explore the Douro valley and the centuries-old wine-making heritage.
The property is family-owned, and caters exclusively for large families or groups of friends who wish to spend holidays together with the option of getting away from everyone at times. Guests will find it just as easy to have fun together as to relax alone!
The house has nine bedrooms (5 with own bathroom, 4 sharing 2 bathrooms) and exquisite reception rooms, and boasts central heating throughout. Bedrooms and key common areas also have air conditioning units. Additional beds and cots are also available.
Children and those more energetic adults can enjoy fun moments in the outdoor pool set in manicured lawns adjacent to the house. Outdoors you can also enjoy garden games such as croquet or Jenga. Or you can walk around the garden and appreciate the local flora, or simply sit on the patio or by the pool enjoying the views with a glass of wine. If you feel like a bit of a climb, go further afield into the orchards and pick your own seasonal fruit for dinner.
Prefer to be indoors? Play cards, darts or table football in our games room, or saunter off for a game of billiards in the room next door. There is even a projection room complete with cinema-style seating (and yes, you can bring your own popcorn!) to watch a movie! Or just take your well-deserved break sitting in one of our classically-decorated yet extremely comfortable living rooms.
Breakfast is included, so look forward to delicious freshly-baked bread, fragrant coffee and many other goodies! Lunch out on the patio overlooking the pool is usually very appealing. But when the time comes for dinner, you can enjoy dining in our luxuriously-appointed dining room, eating off Portuguese fine tableware. Or if you prefer less formal dining, sit outdoors “while still being indoors” in the inner courtyard. The property is often used by the owners for family gatherings or parties, so it is fully-equipped to handle large groups - you won't need to worry about running out of crockery! And if you fancy trying out some Portuguese traditional food we can have some delivered at an extra cost. Summary: The villa is truly amazing. It is very well kept, very clean, and very well equipped. Jessica, our caretaker was wonderful. She was prompt and flexible and kept the kitchen very clean. Marcus, the owner, was very responsive anytime we asked for something or needed a change of plans during our stay. It was a wonderful experience. The only suggestion we have is a bit of variation in the breakfast menu.

Summary: This place deserves awards for how special it is! My husband and I booked Casa Do Monte for our wedding venue in 2024. We booked it about 9 months in advance and during that time, the owner, Marcus, met with us to discuss logistics and make sure everything related to our wedding was as perfect as possible. His help was never advertised or expected but he is an incredible person who helped make our wedding into the perfect day. We had about 22 guests stay in the house over a 4 day period. Breakfast was always laid out in a beautiful spread every morning by the homemaker, Rosa, who greets you every morning with a bom dia and the warmest smile. Casa Do Monte is also situated in the perfect hopping off spot in the Douro Valley for wine tours. Our wedding party rented 2 15-person shuttle buses that transported us from the house to 2 spectacular wineries within the region. We can’t express enough the gratitude we have for this place and the people associated with it. This is truly a hidden gem in the Douro Valley and it’s hard to imagine there are many other listings out there that can compete with this one.

Summary: We were a large group of 14 friends and stayed at the Casa do Monte Douro for eleven days in June. The villa is not only gorgeous, combining old world character with 21st century comfort, but it was the perfect location from which to explore the Douro Valley and the northern cities, towns and villages of Portugal. Nestled among acres and acres of terraced vineyards, none of us will soon forget the spectacular views, the villa grounds -- a gardener’s delight – as well as the wide array of living spaces and amenities, our favorites among which were the hot tub, the gym, the games room, and the swimming pool. We started each day with a delicious breakfast prepared by the wonderful Rosa, the villa’s caretaker/housekeeper. Her support and assistance made our stay all the better. Villa owner Marcus is a gracious, responsive, informative, and welcoming host. His suggestions and assistance with arranging experiences such as a local chef to prepare dinner one evening, a curated list of wineries to visit, and advice and assistance in booking other local adventures, made our stay all the more memorable. For most of us, this was our first trip to Portugal, and we could not have asked for a better introduction to this amazing country and in particular, its wine region. As seasoned villa-experience travelers, we highly recommend Casa do Monte Douro. Date: June 2024

Summary: We had a fabulous time at casa do Monte! The villa is perfect for large families, well equipped and the grounds are beautiful. Marcus was very accommodating and even arranged for us to have a traditional Portuguese BBQ. I highly recommend this villa.

Summary: We have stayed at numerous VRBO properties in a variety of countries and without exception, this was the most extraordinary experience to date. The communication with Marcus, the property owner, was exceptional and there was never a moment where he did not respond in a timely and wonderfully detailed fashion. Casa do Monte is an exquisite Villa loaded with charm, thoughtful detail, and welcoming comfort. We literally do not have enough adjectives to accurately describe how much we all enjoyed this entire, memorable experience. We are already discussing how we can get back there as it is a property well worth a repeat visit. Thank you so much!

Summary: Our experience at Marcus’s house was perfect. The house is beautiful - a mix of old and new that has so much character. The pictures don’t do it justice, it is decorated tastefully in a classic manner but the important things are v new. The bathrooms are extremely clean and modern from a fixtures perspective. The water pressure and temp is wonderful. Also almost every bedroom has en suite bathrooms in addition to the common bathrooms so it feels almost like a hotel in that sense. The kitchen is large and equipped w everything if you want to make large group dinners as we did. The breakfast provided was simple but diverse enough to make everyone happy (incl 4 kids!) and v plentiful. There are so many common areas/rooms that I couldn’t find the gym the first morning even though I had been shown it the day before! The outdoor area and pool were also great (incl an outdoor bathroom), I only wish it had been warmer weather when we were visiting. Rosa the caretaker and Marcus the owner were both v responsive and prompt anytime we had questions about the house or area. The location was very convenient, definitely on the Porto side of Douro valley so depends what towns you want to visit, but we were able to have 4 days of nice day trips all in under 1hr drive each way (Lamego, Six Senses, DOC restaurant, Amarante, Régua). Our group of 2 large families and 4 adult friends had a wonderful stay here and would wholeheartedly recommend it for adults and families alike.

Summary: Our stay at Casa do Monte was perfect from start to finish. Marcus was extremely responsive in the planning stages, helping us plan our trip with activities, transport and catering. His recommendations were all absolutely spot on and ensured we had an excellent experience in the Douro Valley. The house itself is beautiful, very large and spacious, extremely well-equipped, and exceptionally clean. If anything, the photos don't do it justice! We really can't recommend staying here enough.

Summary: What a wonderful property! The experience of communicating with the owner was actually one of the enjoyable aspects of the stay. Marcus was a source of great advice and was always available to converse with. His suggestions turned what would have been a nice stay into an overall magnificent experience. We were a party of 14 old friends who have travelled extensively, all of us were impressed with the casa. The building is spacious, the facilities of a high standard and the surrounding delightful. Special mention must be made of Rosa, the housekeeper, who prepared a great breakfast every morning for us and despite a bit of a language barrier ( our Portuguese was dreadful ! :) ) she managed to look after us like family. We do not have a contrary thing to say about Casa Do Monte, it was more than we expected. We do apologise to the rest of the valley for our singing some nights ! ;) If you need a base to explore the Douro, get your friends together and contact Marcus. this place is where you need to stay.

Summary: The property was stunning. We were an extended family getting together for the first time since the pandemic. The property had so many facilities to suit everyone. The cinema room was popular especially for the women’s World Cup. The gym and jacuzzi were also well used. The pool was great. And as there was a heatwave the week we were there the Air Con was much appreciated. The kitchen was well equipped to cook for a crowd. The breakfast was lovely. A holiday we will never forget. Thank you Marcus and Rosa, especially for organising the birthday cake. Nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended.
