Positive: We had a couple of unfortunate issues and I was impressed with how they were handled. The lights in our room didn’t turn off, so they upgraded us to a better room - their big family cottage on the beach was really nice! When our snorkeling tour fell apart due to the guide speaking neither French nor English, they gave us a free tour the next day. Otherwise as others have said, it’s very basic but the most affordable place in town and the staff was attentive.
Negative: The cafe doesn’t open until 7:00 so if you have an early tour or boat (most people do at least once), then you don’t get breakfast. I was able to get one cup of coffee and slam it down the 2 times I had to leave early, but opening a bit earlier would have been great.

Positive: Excellent attention from the owner and the staff, all our wishes were fulfilled (even the unspoken ones - amazing!). Perfect help with the organization of tours and transportation. Great food, truly awesome location right on the beach, we enjoyed your meals watching the waves and the sunset :) Highly recommended!

Positive: The rooms are of a good size, with an extra loft bed, nice verandah with two seats and a hammock. The owner was really nice and friendly. The staff were also nice, to the extent we could communicate (it is a francophone country but the guy at the reception spoke some English). I thought the food was great and reasonably priced (Fresh juices for Ar 7000, smoothies for 8-10K and main dishes for Ar 20K - 30- 35K for lobster. The only thing to note is that the kitchen is open from 11:30- 13:30 and then 18:30-20:30. Breakfast is also available from Ar 8K. The boat from Toliara (I used Anakao express, though there is also Anakao Transfert) drops you right in front of Mada Surf lodge in Anakao. It costs Ar 70,000 one way from Toliara (1 hr ride) or Ar 140,000 return. The property is located at a beautiful sandy beachfront with clear & turquoise water. It felt very safe walking around, including to Anakao village. There are several sun beds for lounging. You will be approached by vendors selling handicrafts and massage, but I found them polite when I said no. It would be nice to boost the local economy though - their prices were reasonable. From here, one can easily visit Nosy Ve Island and do some snorkelling. The lodge organises this half-day trip at a cost of Ar 30,000 per person (min 2 pax) or Ar 60,000 if travelling solo. The island charges an extra Ar 25,000 entrance fee and you may incur an extra Ar 5-15000 for an island guide if required (I'd like to say you don't really need one, but it is also a dry tourism season and they kind of depend on this for their livelihood...) Things to note: The lodge is in a village with no running water and electricity. The lodge supplies bucket water from the ocean for flushing the toilets. There is separate fresh water for showering supplied from an overhead tap (where a shower would be). There is no hot water but due to the warm coastal weather, the cold water is manageable.
Negative: - As it uses solar and generator, the sockets and WiFi are only accessible in the common reception area (none in the rooms). - So many giant American cockroaches especially in the common lounge area. I'd try (hard) to ignore them if they stuck to the ground, but one had the guts to get into my hair while lounging! I also spotted another one in the room and knowing how courageous they are, had to lock up/zip up my luggage lest it (and its buddies/family) got in, making my a cockroach carrier to my next destination.

Positive: We spent 6 nights at Mada Surf. The owner was very nice and the vibe of this place was simply exceptional. Great location, very laid back, and the perfect spot if you're planning to surf. They organise excursions as well, and its the cheapest option you'll find in Anakao for accommodation.
Negative: The lack of service and the standard of cleaning. Let's be honest, waiting an average of 2 hours for your lunch or dinner does really ruin a little bit the experience and it's such a shame cause the place does have great potential. You'll be chasing them forever and it was frustrating. The bungalow was quite nice but the toilet or simply their sofas at the reception needed to be renewed. We found ourselves chasing for toilet roll and buckets of water for our daily higyne.
