Positive: Both the main house and the extended house where my room was were everything I’d hoped they’d be: charming, cozy, familial, warm, comfortable, and traditionally Japanese! It really was an idyllic, Studio Ghibli-esque slice-of-country-life; serene & peaceful, in touch with the surrounding nature, and people/community oriented! Yasuko-san, Aoi-san, and Syuko-san were fabulous hosts, extremely kind, happy to take part in cultural exchange (were very patient with my attempts at learning and practicing what little Japanese I had learned from Duolingo & eager to chat about the differences and similarities between our cultures and countries), and knowledgeably accommodating for my veganism (really stepped up to that challenge!)! They taught me so much about how they largely subsist off the local wild and garden cultivated vegetables, explaining how they prepared the foods I tried, their nutritional information, and I tried so many new things I’d never heard of- a delicious culinary, educational experience for sure! The surrounding area is gorgeous, like a painting stuck in time. I hope to return soon!
Summary: Cozy, comfortable, clean, and overall fantastic!!!

Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: Quiet and peaceful environment and the host Yasuko looked after us like part of her family. She and grandmother cooked and sat with us for dinner. They only used local and some home grown ingredients which they tasted so special. They also shared their stories of living substantially in Ayabe and recommended us the surrounding attractions. Yasuko was very thoughtful and great communication skill in English. We enjoyed our two night stay very much, first ever experience making konnyaku jelly, okonomiyaki and celebrated New Year Eve together!
Negative: It is a bit cold outside at night and be mindful there is steep stairs to the second floor bedroom.
Summary: Quiet and peaceful environment, delicious home grown meals, must have homestay experience

Positive: All meals had a home-cooked warmth and care. One can sample local wild game meat if available. We had venison in season. And the owners helped prepare a delicious breakfast bento because we had to leave at 6.30am. Room was quiet second floor unit in the midst of a rural village scene with open fields and foggy hills surrounding us in the autumn. Star gazing was also a treat. Also best location to visit Komyoji and Ankokuji temples during autumn leaves and Unkai chasing.
Negative: The bath and toilet is in the main house so bring warm clothes in the cold season if you are the type who needs the loo late at night. Car park is at a side street so pack a light bag and leave the heavy luggage in the car.
Summary: Comfortable introduction to rural Kyoto Prefecture. Short drive to Fukui's Sea of Japan coast.
