The historic Willowshade Farm, also known as Howatt’s Fruit Farm, rests amid its picturesque setting overlooking the mouth of the Tryon River and the Northumberland Strait on a 3 acre lot. Generations of Islanders fondly remember purchasing their berries, apples, vegetables, and preserves, as well as posing for wedding pictures in the sheltered gardens among 100 year old trees. CBC listeners may recall the segment on Mainstreet: “Tales of Willowshade Farm” by Betty Howatt. The Howatts have a long history in the community. The first Howatts settled in Tryon in 1783. The 200 year old farmhouse dates back to the early 1800s. This older home is a grand piece of Island history: Tryon was named and settled by Captain Samuel Holland, British surveyor in 1765, and his own homestead was just up the road from Willowshade Farm, on the Tryon Point Road. Willowshade Farm is also the birthplace of Cornelius Howatt, one of two members of the Island legislature to vote against Confederation in 1873. The farm also has a literary connection, with Canadian author Farley Mowat dropping by in years past for visits with his friends, the Howatts. With its mature trees and water views, Willowshade Farm contains plenty of character and charm.
Willowshade Farm has just been finished with it's renovations which has completely transformed the space. When you walk in the door on the main floor, you are welcomed by light walls and airy fixtures and furniture. There is a porch which is the perfect area to leave your beach gear after an amazing day at the beach exploring and relaxing. You will also find a full bathroom with a standup shower and the laundry area just down the hall. The open concept kitchen and dining room has brand new appliances and all kitchen equipment needed to make delicious meals. Also on the main floor is a sitting room which features a sleeper sofa.
Upstairs is the master bedroom with the ensuite which includes double sinks, a clawfoot tub, and a glass walk in shower. You will also find a bedroom with a double bed, and a bedroom with two single beds. Just down the hallway is a full bathroom with a tub/shower combo.
Other amenities for guest use:
- An outdoor lobster pot with propane
- 4 beach chairs / multiple beach towels
We now have a gorgeous riverside walking trail that goes along the edge of the property which is great for exploring! There will be access to the water starting in 2023.
Willowshade Farm, on the warmer south shore of the Island, is centrally located, only 15 minutes from the Confederation Bridge, and a mere 5 minutes down the road from the quaint village of Victoria by the Sea, with its historic playhouse, cute shops, and eateries. Just a 5 minute drive away is the closest beach- Richard Point. It’s only 30 minutes from Summerside, and 40 minutes from Charlottetown and Cavendish. There is ample of privacy as the property is on a quiet side road in the country. Come enjoy the serenity of this south shore property!

Summary: We were a group of friends who have known each other for 50 years and are spread between P.E.I., Nova Scotia, and Ontario. This was a perfect opportunity and setting for us to get together for an extended visit. Nothing disappointed!! We had a wonderful time! The property was beautiful in every way…a place of peace and happiness.

Summary: This has been our first family vacation with our families and toddlers. We fell in love with Willowshade because of the views and the beautiful property. Located centrally it gave us the opportunity to explore beaches and different parts of the island. We highly recommend this getaway location to anyone looking for quiet, privacy and a time reconnect.

Summary: My sister and I were visiting friends and relatives after a five year break. This house allowed us to have friendly lunches and dinners and to relax on the expansive front porch. The quiet gardens and trees made it so special. Close enough to the beaches and towns. Loved the Victoria Theater, the Quilts at Eptek. Thank you to the Dixons ( who introduced us to Island wines and their organic beef) and VRBO for making our stay so enjoyable.

Summary: Don't delay, you have found the PERFECT home for your visit to PEI! My 3 BFFs and I booked this restored farm house for our girls' trip to PEI. We were all obsessed with Anne of Green Gables as children and wanted to experience all things Anne in person. We chose this home due to the central location on PEI and we were close to Cavendish which is the town that Avonlea is based on. Not only was the location perfect BUT the home itself was STUNNING!! More than enough room for 4 adult women and all their luggage! The home had everything we needed! The interior was immaculate! We have booked numerous VRBOs over the past 15 years and this home was the cleanest and most impressive! The host, Tim, was extremely kind and helpful! He even left us free angus beef from his own beef farm and a bottle of wine! We used the grill and cooked burgers one night! The home is located near the water and you can see the shore from almost all the windows. There are not enough words in the English language to describe the bucolic setting of this home. You have to see it in person! The most stunning location, so quiet and relaxing! We loved all the wildflowers that surrounded the home, lupins everywhere! There are many great restaurants not too far from the home! Two of our favorites were The Lobster Barn & The Red Rooster! You must also visit a Cows Creamery! If we could give this home, and the host Tim, more than 5 stars, we would! I guarantee you will fall in love with this farmhouse

Summary: My family and I met at this beautiful property for our Family reunion and had an amazing time. The home is very roomy and so tastefully done and so cozy. We really enjoyed walking down near the water or sitting on the sun deck taking in the spectacular view and tranquility. I would stay here again and highly recommend to anyone interested in a quiet getaway away from town .

Summary: A beautiful farm with a rich history located on the Tryon River. Walking around the area is wonderful and it is a very short drive into Victoria by the Sea which has cute shops and great food options. It was an easy launching off place for visiting the North shore and Charlottetown.

Summary: If you're looking to get away in an idyllic PEI setting, Willowshade farm is your place. Perfect for families or anyone seeking a truly unique island experience. We travelled with a 3 and a 6 year old and they loved the space in the house and property. Here are a few of our highlights. First, the property has a beautiful ocean view from the deck out front, two of the bedrooms including the master, the kitchen and main living space. We spent most of our evenings on the deck watching ospreys and herons play over the inlet. The tides are always changing making the view dynamic at all times. I highly recommend taking a walk on the trail around the property that brings you right along the water's edge. The views in the evening or morning are stunning. Second, the house itself is much bigger than what the images show and ideally decorated for a rental. The master has a sizeable en suite. Towels and linens were plentiful and at the same level as a good hotel. Our kids loved the wrap around couch and big kitchen table. Third, the local amenities are close, enjoyable and provide any of the services you need while away. We really enjoyed dining out or getting take-out in Victoria-by-the-sea (10 minute drive via some cool backroads). Argyle and Canoe Cove are also nearby giving us a convenient activity for the kids any day. Beaches on the northern shore were great, not busy and only a 30 minute drive. Lastly, the farm has a truly fascinating heritage. We were thrilled to see a book written with passages about live on the farm from the perspective of the current owner's family. Lastly, we found PEI affordable compared to similar trip to a cottage in Ontario. Flight and stay were less than the equivalent rental price of a similar property in Ontario. We'll certainly be back to Willowshade Farm.
