3 Bedroom House in West Tremont

Built in about 1850 our house is located at the end of a short private road in the village of West Tremont. The location offers the atmosphere of small town, rural Maine less than a half hour drive to Bar Harbor and just minutes from some of Acadia National Parks most incredible attractions: Wonderland, Ship Harbor Nature Trail, Seawall, Bass Harbor Head Light, Long Pond and miles of hiking trails.
The house retains many of its original characteristics including wide pine plank flooring, as well as, the floor to ceiling windows in the living room and front entrance. In 2006 we replaced the old attached shed with a new addition. In this area are the kitchen, ¾ bathroom and laundry. The full bathroom upstairs was renovated at the same time. There are three second floor bedrooms: one with a queen bed, one with a full size bed and one with three twin beds, one separated form the others by a partial wall. There is Wi-Fi and cable TV.
Although restored and renovated it is an old house which means the floors sometimes creak and during humid weather the closet doors may swell and not close tightly but it is also interesting to think of all those who have walked the floors of the house in its 170 year history. A copy of the history of the house as detailed in Ray Robbin's book "The Houses of West Tremont" is available in the house.
We treat this as our house, not a rental property. At most we rent it 5-6 weeks of the year and some years not at all. Staying here should be thought of as a home stay. It is not a place with "hotel-like" amenities.
Pets are welcome but must be approved on an individual basis.
The 1.5 acre yard is surrounded by fir and pine forest on three sides. Behind the house is exposed granite ledge with the occasional blueberry bush. It is a great place to sit in the afternoon sun to read or enjoy a beverage.
Two of our favorite spots outside of the park are the town dock on Seal Cove and Lopaus Point in Bernard. The town dock is about 2 miles to the west and is a great place to put in a kayak and paddle around the cove or to sit on the rocks and watch the sunset. Lopaus Point in Bernard is also only minutes away. Here there are areas of sandy/pebble beach along the rocky shore. We’ve rarely encountered anyone else there. For lake swimming there is Pond’s End on Long Pond and Echo Lake Beach in the park.
Nearby Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor have a variety of restaurants, as well as, bicycle and kayak outfitters.

Summary: Dan's home was an absolutely delightful place to stay! It was like we were staying at our own extended family's cottage in Maine. The house's history has been wonderfully and thoughtfully preserved, while providing modern updates that integrate perfectly with the rustic charm of the home (kitchen, bathrooms, wifi, washer and dryer, etc.). We love the "quiet side" if MDI, and are always selfishly reluctant to tell others about the serenity of vacationing here, but Dan's house met every expectation we could have had! And yes, the deer walking through in the morning and Bald Eagles flying overhead, mentioned by others , actually do happen! What a wonderful home and location! Thanks again, Dan, for sharing this beautiful home for others to enjoy. We truly hated leaving!

Summary: This house was exactly what we were looking for in a classic style home in Maine. It was charming and relaxing. Being on the “quiet side” provided a break from the activity on other parts of the island. I would not hesitate to stay here again

Summary: We stayed in Dan's home for 2 weeks in August and September of 2018. From the moment we arrived on the property we were so happy with our decision to stay in West Tremont. The house truly felt like we were staying in Maine. We love old homes and this house was the perfect blend of character and modern touches (laundry, dishwasher, large kitchen, updated baths, and fast wifi). The location was near some of our favorite parts of Acadia- Acadia Mountain, Seawall, Bass Harbor List, Ship Harbor, and Southwest Harbor. We found a local lobsterman a few miles away. We drove to Bar Harbor and the park visitor's center almost every day (about 30 minute away, but not a bad drive). When booking, we always look for affordable properties, that provide privacy, and allow us to bring our dog. Dan's house was a perfect fit. The house is at the end of a lane and it very private. We saw deer in the morning, a bald eagle two days, and stargazed every clear night. The house was a great size for our large family- 9 adults and a baby, plus a dog. The kitchen was well stocked and plenty big enough for cooking. We would love to return to Dan's home again!

Summary: My family enjoyed our stay on the quite side of the island and loved the character of this older home. Home was comfortable for our family of 6. Location was perfect for us to explore the island and was close to all of the hikes we had planned during the week. We would definitely stay again.

Summary: Our family enjoyed a month-long stay for the second year in a row at this lovely sea captain's house. The home is full of historic charm yet comfortable with a modern kitchen and bathroom upstairs and down. A natural, private, quiet setting well off the road enhances the home's appeal. Amenities are accurately described in the listing and the property is cleaned and well-maintained. We prefer to prepare meals at home and the kitchen is well stocked with cookware and table service. The owner, Dan, is happy to share his knowledge of the home's history and is fast to respond to any questions. We enjoyed hiking and biking in Acadia National Park and sight seeing on Mount Desert Island. The property is perfect for families looking for an authentic Maine experience in a historic setting.
