Positive: The views from the patio were indescribable. Place was cozy. Everything we needed to cook and relax. It was relaxing, quiet, romantic. A short walk to the coffee shop for a morning cup. Malcom island was pure magic. We signed out bikes from the rec centered. We walked and biked all around.

Positive: The suite dubbed "stand-alone" was ideal for me. I was mesmerized as just how close to the water that the deck was - I could hear waves lapping on the rocks with the sliding door closed. The queen bed was clean and comfortable and the suite well-equipped. An updated hot plate negated any real need for a stove - there isn't space for one anyway. Full washroom. Good enough internet and a great TV. A useful selection of literature weeks before your stay re:suggested hikes etc. is easily accessed. Your Host is very responsive and will send you a text with tips. ie. Bikes for rent locally and how to utilize the ferry strategically and cheaply. I had 6 sailings for a grand total of $11.60. ie. Any travel between islands is technically free. And, ... the drinking water is just fine. A 700 m (10 minute walk to Burger Barn - a local favourite) With planning, flexibility, and maybe good luck, you can quickly slow down - shrug your shoulders - the fog will lift. Become an islander.
Negative: As I travelled by available transit from South Island, (no car) I had to walk the 1.2 km to the lodge from the ferry. About 16 minutes - with groceries. Best not to come to the island for a Sunday or Monday - when the Sointula Co-op grocery and some (but not all) other facilities one might need are closed. Alert Bay's situation is even more extreme. In the suite The galley-style kitchen counter may be a little narrow, and in need of a dish drying rack, but it's okay because EVERYTHING else is there. Expect to find an updated the BBQ operating manual, for safety sake.

Positive: The suite was cozy and comfortable and easily slept our entire party. There was a full kitchen, so we cooked most of our meals and saved money by not having to buy meals out. Most importantly however, the views were stunning! We would definitely stay again.

Positive: There is little to not like about Orca Lodge - your feet are right above the water at high tide. I watched crows dine on a fisherman's salmon fillet remains, and an eagle make off with the entire skeleton. It is an utterly delightful place to stay in a delightful historic little village. The owners are responsive and lovely people. This has been my third visit there, and I very much hope to have a fourth.
Negative: I did notice, for the first time, that the tap water tasted a little sulphury - it is fine to drink, but I was happy that I had my own travel container of water for consumption.
Summary: Life is as people should live it in Sointula, and Orca Lodge just adds to that.
