Whirligig Retreat lies on the west side of the city of Gunnison, Colorado, only 5 minutes drive or 10 minutes bike ride from downtown. This family-sized home, on a single level, is surrounded by a mature 1.4 acre cottonwood grove, alive with native species of wild flowers, and lies within a minute’s walk of the famous “gold medal” Gunnison River. The grove is home to many bird species (including a nest frequented by bald eagles), a small mule deer family, and many other curious critters such as squirrels and chipmunks.
For outdoor relaxation, the property has a spacious new deck with propane gas grill and child-proof railings built to current safety codes, plus a large fire pit with ample supplies of firewood for guests to use. To the rear of the house is a fully fenced area where dogs can roam without fear of escape or intrusion. Whirligig Retreat also enjoys a stretch of private river access, perfect for some secluded bird watching, or casting a fly to the numerous resident brown trout, rainbow trout and Kokanee salmon.
Inside the home you will find an inviting living room with a large widescreen tv with internet streaming capabilities, a leather reclining couch, and additional armchairs from which to enjoy the real log fire. The fully equipped kitchen contains all new appliances and a convenient breakfast bar with four stools. Adjacent to the kitchen lies a separate dining area with a refectory style table and ample seating for 6 people to dine together. A second family room in the front of the house offers further couch and armchair seating.
There are three spacious double bedrooms – two with comfortable queen beds (one of these with en-suite bathroom) and one bedroom with a full-sized bed. There is also a separate family bathroom off the hallway with a full-sized tub and shower.
The spacious two-car car garage has plenty of room for storing equipment for outdoor pursuits such as fishing tackle, mountain bikes, and hiking / climbing gear.
For the outdoor enthusiast, the exceptional Hartman Rocks recreational area, set in 14,000 acres with 45 miles of hiking and bike trails, lies only 5 minutes’ drive away. The exciting Gunnison White Water Park is even closer – within half a mile of the Retreat, making this the perfect center for all your favorite outdoor pursuits.

Summary: Four of us headed to Gunnison for elk hunting and scored a couple elk. Our host, Terri, was very responsive and our accommodations were top notch, clean, comfortable, and provided everything we needed. We would definitely stay again if in the area and recommend this property without hesitation.

Summary: This Gunnison house is located close to everything we wanted to do, but felt so secluded and private. Kitchen is well stocked, plenty of room for one couple and two singles -- three bedrooms and two bathrooms and two living rooms all very roomy-- and the property was nicely shaded and close to the river, which my fly fishing husband loved!. The newer deck is absolutely lovely, and we spent lots of time out there with the hummingbirds. Everything was seamless, from the initial contact with the owner through the checkout procedure. Highly recommended!

Summary: This home was fabulous for a quiet stay near Gunnison. Roomy, 3 bedrooms, very well-equipped kitchen, family room, living room, 2 bathrooms, can even use the garage! Very quiet neighborhood, really comfortable beds with high quality sheets and blankets (no duvet! Yea!), some of the best night's sleep we have had in ages! Definitely recommended, we look forward to staying here again.

Summary: We absolutely loved staying at Terri’s home. The place was clean and cozy, enough space for us to spread out. We loved the quiet and peacefulness of the home/yard, yet it was not far from town. Terri was super helpful with anything we needed, we plan to stay here again on our next trip out to Gunni!
