Positive: Beautiful rustic guesthouse in forested setting a couple of kms outside the gorgeous onsen town, Kurokawa Onsen. You need a car to travel in this area. Had a large bedroom and separate living area. Well equipped. Private onsen in building next door. The cabin was heated and cosy when we arrived on a cold night. Very clear and helpful pre-arrival information provided in English. Fantastic western style breakfast and gourmet Japanese evening meal provided. Amazing value for money. Would not hesitate to stay again. Brilliant place with charming and helpful host.

Positive: If you are looking for a place to enjoy nature while doing a roadtrip, this place is just perfect for you!! I loved all the aspects of this place. Starting from pre-arrival as the host will contact you ahead of time to give you some advices and head-ups (as the place is nothing near any public transportation), the cabin is HUGE considering if you are traveling in Japan, breakfasts and hosts themselves are also super nice! Definitely coming back to this place during winter next time!
Negative: The bathroom is shared (you could also use an Onsen too) Although there is nothing wrong with the place. Just plan and manage yourself accordingly if you are staying here during high-season. Restaurants in the area also close very early (4-5 PM). But it’s a big deal as eating a meal of convenience store’s food won’t kill you right away.

Positive: This is my favourite place to stay. You will need a car and if you do, it is so worth it. The lodge is located in a beautiful area. It is quiet, comfortable and cosy. At night you can hear the owls and see the stars. The breakfast is clean, healthy and delicious. This is better than any five star hotel. There is even a private bath to soak in. The owner takes great pride in the place and prepares his meals with care and attention. I am so glad we stayed here for 4 nights. If we come to Aso again, I will not stay anywhere else.

Positive: Amazing place to stay. Had 2 huge rooms to ourselves and access to our own private onsen. Great access to hiking and close to Kurokawa onsen if you want to visit. The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. And...the food - incredible! Do yourself a favor and have your meals there. We regretted not booking dinner for both nights we stayed. Would absolutely come back.

Positive: Lovely cabin with two big rooms in a wooded location on a hillside. We would have been happy with only one room but the owner (who spoke English) thought that was too small! There was also a veranda to sit on but it was too cold in November. There was a sink and a toilet in both rooms. There was a private bath big enough for 2 in a cabin 10m away. The food was amazing. Really top notch cooking. Deserved a Michelin star! Don’t miss out on the food. I think it was 3,800 yen for dinner.
Negative: Nothing. But you need a car and google maps to get to it.
