Poponi House is an elegant beach estate built by Hon. Edward Brabazon Meade in the early 1940's. Meade was the son of the 4th Earl of Clanwilliam, admiral of the British fleet and advisor to Queen Victoria. The Meade family were direct descendants of William the Conqueror.
Poponi is a four-acre beachfront estate located on the beach that was named after it, the mile-long, pink-sand Poponi Beach. Poponi was picked by Caribbean Travel & Life as one of the 20 best beaches in the Caribbean. The house is 50 paces from the beach, set among beautiful grounds landscaped with palms and flowering trees. There is great snorkeling off of our beach! Two beachfront restaurant/bars are walking distance down the beach: Unique Village, 10 minutes, and La Bougainvillea 15 minutes.
Poponi House offers expansive views of the Atlantic from both bedrooms, which are located at the front of the house. The master bedroom, with en-suite bathroom and king-size bed, has French doors that open onto a porch with ocean breezes. The second bedroom has the same incredible views and access to the screened porch that runs along the south side of the house. The second bedroom has twin beds that can be converted into a comfortable king size bed. The bath for this bedroom is located right across the hall from it. There is also an outdoor shower at Poponi for guests who prefer showering “en plein air” in such a private setting.
Poponi has two living areas - the first has a beautiful wooden tray ceiling with fans and comfortable furniture. The cable TV, DVD, video library, chromecast etc. are located in this room. It has doors leading to the screened porch. The second living area offers ocean views and breezes, beautiful natural lighting, comfortable seating, and doors out onto the screened porch. There is also a dining table for six.
The kitchen is fully equipped with new stainless steel gas range, refrigerator, dishwasher, abd microwave, and gas views of the great banyan tree in the backyard. It has a door leading out to the bougainvillea-covered trellis with dining table beneath and small courtyard with a gas grill. The screened porch on the south side of Poponi offers spectacular views and peaceful breezes of the Atlantic. There is a furnished cabana down by the beach which provides shade and privacy.
Poponi has many amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Amenities include back-up generator, air conditioning in one living room and both bedrooms (the guest bedroom has a portable AC unit that can be used when needed), WiFi, TV, cable, DVD, stereo system, board games, safe, beach chairs and hammocks by the beach and under the Banyan tree.
For larger groups, there is a studio cottage a short walk from the house which can be included for an extra charge.
Poponi house is centrally located near the settlement of North Palmetto Point which has several grocery shops, pharmacy and restaurants. The historic town of Governor's Harbour, the main town on the island, is a ten minute drive from the property. Governors Harbour has grocery stores, banks with ATM's, gift shops, liquor stores, dive shop, bakery, and half a dozen excellent restaurants. One or another of the restaurants/bars will have live music almost every night of the week. You can also buy the fresh catch of the day to grill at home from the town dock.

Very clean, spacious, lovely grounds, and we enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch each morning while we made plans for the day. We enjoyed relaxing after a day of sightseeing and beachcombing in the living room, family room, and even made dinner one night with the fresh produce we got from a local farmer.If you are considering renting this home, there are a few "beware" items to consider. On the first day we arrived after being at our local airport at 3am, rushing through the Miami airport to catch our connection, waiting in the heat at our arrival at the north Eleuthera airport, loading our bags, navigating the rough and narrow roads for more than an hour, and finally finding the right (very rough) road to turn on to get to Poponi, we wanted to cool down and put our feet up for a bit. Missy quickly came down and told us that we should try to not use the A/C because energy is VERY expensive in Eleuthera. And it was "IN THE CONTRACT" that she could charge us even more if we used it. We let her know we were tired and hot and were not planning to leave it on or go away from the house without turning it off. Her response to us being hot was "well...you ARE in the Bahamas". Also, only one of the bedrooms had an A/C unit.Another "beware" is about toilet paper and drinking water. Poponi has two bathrooms, but you are allotted ONE ROLL of toilet paper per bathroom per week. When we asked if we could get another roll, she told us that we "RENTED THE HOUSE ONLY AND IT IS IN THE CONTRACT" and we would need to go to the store to purchase additional rolls of TP. We bought a four pack ($4). Also, we were allotted one five-gallon jug of drinking water for four people for a one week stay. Again, we asked about getting another one and were referred to the grocery store to purchase one ($6) because it was "IN THE CONTRACT". She did, however, come down to give restaurant and beach suggestions.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We would not recommend this property even though it is as lovely as the photos. Our problems were with the owners who live on the property and continually gave us the feeling of being watched. (The entrance has a surveillance camera.) On Christmas Eve, they informed us that we were in violation of our rental agreement because we had another family over to dinner. It was only a dinner, not a party or an overnight stay. We are experienced as both landlords and renters in many situations and never had such tense interactions over so little. Elsewhere on the island, we experienced great hospitality, but not at Poponi House. It was a shame to spend so much money and not feel welcome.

We loved the location and the proximity to grocery stores as well as a few restaurants. The property is well maintained and clean with several places to lounge, including two hammocks down by the incredible beach. Rick and Missy were wonderful hosts. They checked in just enough to make sure things were perfect during our stay.

Summary: I warn anyone coming to Eleuthera for the first time to temper their ambitions because the first time you see this property you aren’t going to want to leave. During our stay, the water was beautiful and the beach was empty. The house is gorgeous and well stocked. Just grab the chairs provided, fill the cooler provided, and head down to the beach for the entire stay. Some advice: if you walk to La Bougainvillea, walk near low tide. The sand can be hard to walk on otherwise. Absolutely walk down there for pizza on Thursday. The lobster garlic pizza is amazing. This place is heaven.
