The space
Welcome to The Garlach House built in 1830. Our home witnessed the battle of Gettysburg and was the home of Henry and Catherine Garlach. As our home is only part of the entire Garlach house, we feel very privileged to own a piece of local history! Here you will experience the comfort of your own home with a fully equipped kitchen, 3 bedrooms, full bath, half bath (on the first floor), office, living & dining room along with a laundry/mud room. We do have a sofa bed if needed.
Catherine Garlach provided food and water to the Union General, Alexander Schimmelfennig. General Schimmelfenning’s horse was shot out from under him in the alley behind our home and he managed to hide in the backyard of the Garlach home in their woodshed while the surrounding streets were occupied by Confederates. That night, while Catherine fed her hogs, General Schimmelfennig let her know that he was there, and she provided him with food and water while he was in hiding until he rejoined his men on July 4th, 1863. Being the cabinet maker's wife that she was, she built a make-shift floor in her flooded cellar using logs and boards which allowed for her family and some of her neighbors to stay safe during the battle.
Guest access
Our home has a dedicated parking space in the rear for a large truck/SUV and free parking just a short distance away.
Other things to note
This home has steeper steps (no children’s gate either) that must be used to access all bedrooms and full bath. If you have trouble with steps or have younger children, this home may not be suitable.

Summary: My family loved this property! Perfect location, on site parking, comfy beds, and lovely ambiance! Plus the owner left us biscuits, butter, honey, home raised eggs, wine, root beer, and cookies! Just wonderful details and thoughtful touches! Communication was great, and everything was very smooth. The only thing I would say, if you have mobility problems or very small children, the staircase is a little on the steep side, which is typical for a house of this era. Our family was fine with it, and loved the history of the house too!

Summary: We had an amazing time while we stayed at the Garlach house. Despite a hiccup on my end with the check out times, Megan was extremely understanding and very gracious! If we have an opportunity to stay at the Garlach house in the future, it will definitely be one of my top picks. We were within walking distance of almost everything we wanted to do or see while we were in Gettysburg. Couldn't have been happier!

Summary: This is the first time I stayed at a VRBO house and was apprehensive. I always stayed at B&B’s. Megan and the Garlach House could not have been more perfect! The location of the home is excellent and was within walking distance of everything. The home was the cleanest I have ever stayed in. It had a cozy outdoor space. The beds were comfortable and the home had everything we could possibly need. The decor was beautiful and the personal touches Megan adds was above and beyond spectacular. From a bottle of cider to homemade cookies and biscuits and little local gifts everywhere, it was so charming. The Garlach House has ruined Gettysburg for me because I don’t think I can go back if I can’t stay there again lol. We loved it so much. It deserves 10 stars.

Summary: The house was amazing, well stocked with everything you need, and the owner made our family feel at home with the lovely handwritten note and all the goodies (bottle of cider, homemade biscuits, coffee/tea, and fresh eggs). Owner checked on us to make sure arrival was good and to see if we needed anything. Location of house is perfect right in the heart of Gettysburg so able to walk to all the amazing food places, museums, and shops. We come every year and we will definitely come stay here again.

Summary: In 1989, 5 roommates graduated from Juniata College. Other than weddings & funerals, we have not all been together. After meeting at Mount St. Mary's University (just down the road) to watch my son play rugby, we traveled to Gettysburg and the Garlach House. We then spent the next 6 hours belly laughing while catching up. The intimate setting of this house allowed us to converse into the wee hours. Thank you so much for the perfect weekend!
