Positive: This historic building dates back to the 16th century but has been well maintained and mixes traditional furnishings with modern touches. It is beautiful and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and the staff was incredible. We booked the most basic room but were upgraded on arrival to the superior room. In November, the hotel was very quiet and not busy at all as it's the off season. The location is also right next to the river and the town. On the hotel's website, you can only book for a 2 night minimum, but Booking.com allows you to book 1 night, which was perfect for our quick weekend getaway.
Negative: Super small thing but because it's an old building, the doors are low, so you have to be careful if you're tall. Also, there wasn't any temperature control in the room that we could find (but that wasn't an issue during our stay).

Negative: I did not notice that our room contained a Queen bed, so smaller than a double, when I booked it. The room was very small as well although well furnished. I don’t believe the price point is right for this type of room. It spoilt the break as neither of us had a good night’s sleep for two nights.

Negative: Our room was far too small. The bathroom was miniscule with absolutely no area to put toiletries. The carpark was always full. Finding a spot sometimes took a while.

Positive: the gardens were as beautiful as any hotel we had stayed in, and we have travelled a lot in europe as well as the UK. everything was well done, staff excellent, attentive without being a nuisance - not easy to achieve. food excellent. well done, not easy to achieve these standards.

Positive: The Heron Suite is spacious, very well appointed and comfortable. The private access to the riverside terrace was the icing on the cake. Younger members of staff very welcoming to a gay couple and our guests at dinner.
Negative: Two male guests and only female Molton and Brown Products … an empty tissues box. Many of the dishes in the restaurant were disappointing ( and over salted) the fish at breakfast was “off”. Some older staff were distinctly unwelcoming and unprofessional to a gay couple and their guests at dinner.
Summary: The hotel has the potential to be a magical celebratory destination, we were disappointed
