Chebeague Island House | Renovated, Sunny 1850's Island Farmhouse

3 Bedroom House in Chebeague Island

This immaculately renovated home was built in the 1850's and is situated on a private 3-acre hilltop setting. This home has the conveniences of a year-round home including a fully-stocked kitchen—even a Vitamix for morning smoothies.
The downstairs has a full eat-in kitchen and a sitting area with two large chairs, a favorite spot in the house. The dining room has a coffee bar and even a daybed to take full advantage of the sun. Towards the middle of the house you'll find a bathroom with an enclosed, stacking washer/dryer and a standing shower. Walk past the bathroom and you'll find yourself standing in the large living room, which is well–provisioned for entertainment; numerous board games and a 32" TV + movies. With an Apple TV you can stream your favorite programming. From the hallway you might also choose to walk outside the sliding glass doors to enjoy some time on the deck. On the side deck we have a large picnic table, a Weber gas grill and a hammock. I nearly forgot to mention the fire pit, a staple for s'more creation!
Upstairs, the home has 3 bedrooms that will comfortably sleep 5 people. The largest bedroom features 1 queen bed. We have some toys younger, preschool kids). Enjoy the soaking tub after a long day at the beach.
This island home is conveniently located in the middle of the island, between both ferries, beaches, library, island grocery, and a half-mile to the pool and Recreation Center. The boatyard is a 10-minute downhill walk through a forest-covered footpath. Bikes are available to explore this 4-mile-long island and its many beaches.
The Islander Ferry makes regular trips to Yarmouth while the Casco Bay Lines ferry travels to Portland so you can explore its many shops and restaurants in the Old Port. Groceries can be purchased at Doughty's Market on the island or by placing an order with area markets, including Whole Foods, to be delivered to the island daily via the Casco Bay Lines ferry. Fresh seafood is also available on the island.
BONUS: This house includes use of our island car, a Toyota truck. This truck has a MANUAL transmission. It is an island car in every sense, sturdy but not fashionable.

Summary: Our stay at the House on a Hill was absolutely lovely! From start to finish, Caroline and her family were incredibly kind and welcoming. She went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. As two adult couples, we found the house to be more than spacious and exceedingly quaint. Should we ever return to the island, we will be sure to contact the House on a Hill first!

Summary: House on the Hill was the perfect find for our family. We have three daughters between the ages of 4 and 8, and this home was perfect for them, with its large kids bedroom complete with toys. The home was also great for my husband and I and my parents. The accommodations were excellent and clean. The beds were amazingly comfortable, and the kitchen beyond well equipped. We enjoyed many gourmet drinks from the authentic professional espresso machine . There were plenty of toys and games to keep us entertained. We actually loved not having a TV. We were able to unplug and reconnect as a family, as well as enjoy the splendor of Chebeague Island. The Loder family made the intricacies of island life simple with an excellent manual that included info on the Ferry schedule, getting groceries, and activities. We used Hannaford to Go for groceries on the way to the island, then had a mid-week delivery from Whole Foods in Portland that came ready to go on the Casco Bay Ferry. We also got a lot of produce from the local farm stand. There is an island market that has a lot of essentials and excellent sub sandwiches! The island was so calm and quiet and had pristine beaches that our family loved exploring. Although we didn't get a chance to go, the Chebeague Island Inn is a beautifully restored hotel that is supposed to have amazing food. The island residents were so friendly. Everyone waves when they pass, and I really miss that now that we are gone. I can't wait to return to this little piece of paradise. On a quick side note? Caroline Loder (owner) is an amazing artist and has many originals hanging in the home. She is worth looking up online. He art is stunning!
