4 Bedroom Cottage in Campobello Island, St. Andrews

The Sea Urchin Cottage is on the north end of beautiful Campobello Island, home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's beloved summer home and the museum and International Park which bear his name. Campobello Island is connected by bridge to Lubec, Maine, home of the renowned candy-striped West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, the easternmost point of the United States.
Within walking distance of the picturesque East Quoddy Head Harbor Lighthouse, the Sea Urchin sits on a cliff overlooking a sandy beach steps from your doorstep! With the woods behind the cottage, the Passamaquoddy Bay in front of the cottage, and the cliffs rising up from the beach on each side of the cottage, the Sea Urchin offers unparalleled privacy and seclusion and an unbelievably beautiful view. Whales and Eagles pass by often.
View whales, seals, porpoises, ospreys, eagles, and beautiful sunsets, whimsical sailboats, working fishing boats and huge cargo ships from your dining room table, from the attached deck, or from the screened-in tree house which sleeps three people! Camping pads are provided in the tree house, but you must bring sleeping bags.
Built by a boat builder, the Sea Urchin is compact, but can sleep up to six people inside the cottage.
We have two cottages available to rent side by side, each on their own 3 acres of land. Please inquire.
Have a large family? Rent the Whale of a View and the Sea Urchin next door! Both cottages are private and located on their own private 3 acres. They are connected by a trail along the shore through the woods. There is also a small 1 bedroom cottage located on the property which is private from both of these cottages that is available for overflow crowds for an additional fee. Please inquire.

Summary: The cottage is obviously loved by the owners. Open your eyes and you will see every amenity you need. Charming plates, hooks for hanging. binoculars, board games, books, and charts for fish, birds, sight seeing, important numbers for everything. A charcoal grill, decks, fire pit and so much more. Porpoise, Puffins, Bald Eagles, Harbor Seals, Grey Seals daily, 54 stair private Bull Dog beach access with chairs awaiting at the bottom. We where ages 51-80 and we walked the beach every day. The parks are clean with great bike and driving access. Dennis called right away to see everything was good. The housekeeper and maintenance where so informative. This is a great relaxing sitting, biking, beach combing, sightseeing, and history abound vaca. We hope you see the beauty we saw!

Summary: What a fantastic vacation! The cottage was exactly as described. The rustic qualities reminded you of what it was like to be at the cottage as a kid. It was clean and had everything that we needed for the week. Our family enjoyed the abundant wildlife that was right off the large decks. We saw at least one whale 6 of 7 days, with the porpoise, seals and bald eagles making frequent passes each day. Our daughter spent many hours combing the large, private beach for all kinds of sea treasures. The island offered enough activities that we did not have time to leave and visit surrounding areas. The East Quoddy lighthouse is a short 2km walk to the parking area. A big thank you to Brandon at Capt. Riddles whale watching for a great tour. We also visited the FDR park with the attractions and many scenic trails. The lobster at the Family Fisheries restaurant was so fresh and sweet. Thank you to Dennis and family for sharing your little oasis with us. Can't wait to return.

Summary: If what you seek is a view of the ocean, eagles, seals, the foggy a.m., etc, here's your place. New screened in porch offers a window to the world that is superb. (Note to Dennis-that captains wheel might be better placed-just sayin). Comfortable porch and just a great room/area for relaxing---where we stayed most of the time. Outdoor deck equally as nice...but the bugs were in mid-season form, so... Small place-couple small bedrooms, living room, kitchen...didn't want a barn---didn't get one. Lots and lots of stuff in the place...lots. Kitchen functional. Refridge may be near its shelf life expiry date---esp frezer, but it works. Stove works...bathroom compact but ok...in general the entire place was ok. Not exceptional...ok. The view is the attraction. 52 steps to the beach on a steep stairwell...land is steeply tilted from back of house up hill to parking area for your vehicle...facts---keep in mind if you rent. Tree house for kids very cool...could see myself there as a kid...would be a huge plus for families. Beach all stone (as is the entire island). Certainly private...can build fires there, etc...but remember those 52 steps. Overall ok. The view is what you are paying for...

Summary: We had the priviledge of spending 3 nights at this cottage. The cottage had all the gadgets we could need, but the real feature was the beauty of the ocean in front of us. I spent one morning, sitting with my coffee watching and LISTENING to 4 whales, 2 on either side of the cottage. We found starfish, sea urchin, saw harbour seals, porpoises, and whales almost daily. The local restaurant sold lobster for dinner, the whale watching tour was great, and the lighthouse at then end of the island was unbelieveable. The stairway to the beach was a bit steep, and had 50 stairs but do-able Not much to do other than that on the island, but, for a quiet, relaxing vacation with the wildlife, I personally cannot wait to go back.

Summary: In Aug. 2010 my husband, 15yr old son and myself stayed here for a week. The cottage was cute and had everything we needed. If you love the nature, you will love it. The cottage is tucked in a bit of a wooded area but faced the Bay of Fundy. The tides were amazing to watch roll in and out...with the tides, came fresh food for the whales. Morning coffees outside while watching porpoises playing in the water, hearing the blows from the Fin whales as they tell us we will see them soon was so exciting to all of us. We saw many whales swim past the cottage. No binoculars needed. I was thrilled. The reason we chose this cottage was because we were told we would see lots of wildlife, including whales. We were NOT disappointed. The owner was wonderful to deal with. We plan to visit again.

Summary: I almost hesitate to write this- because I'm afraid the cottage will be even harder to book next time! My husband and my 2 14 year old sons (who are super hard to impress) and I spent an incredible week here. We were greeted by whales and a seal in the cove. For the remaining week, we were treated to a similar show every day. We timed everything we did on the tide and the whales and dolphins schedule. It was hard to tear ourselves away from the deck, beach and tidepools. Although we did sneak in some hiking on the beautiful trails at the park. The cottage is small, clean, well maintained and appointed and completely private. While we stayed at Sea Urchin, I was illustrating a picture book for kids about the overall health of the ocean. It made me appreciate even more, the beauty and fragility around me.

Summary: Whales, porpoise, seals, and eagles from your front window!! Not to mention the lovely private beach and cozy cottage. A truly beautiful spot. Owners, Dennis and Margaret are delightful and very helpful. Not a place for lots of shopping or nightlife, but the sunsets are entertaining enough and if you sit quietly you can hear the porpoise and whales breathing as they swim by. Now that's entertainment!! There is plenty to see and do in the nearby area, if you can tear yourself away from the Sea Urchin. Machias Seal Island has thousands of puffins until mid August. This was an amazing trip and tours are available from the lovely village of Cutler about 45 minutes from the Sea Urchin. Local whale watching trips are available and are really great fun. I would recommend Capt Riddle's just down the road. It's a fairly small, but safe, boat, not overcrowded and whales come up close. There are also many beautiful lighthouses nearby. East Quoddy Head is within walking distance. Restaurants on Campobello Island were hit or miss. We found this to be very surprising, but owners, Dennis & Margaret will steer you in the right direction, and Lubec also has a few good spots. Cohill's Inn is good, and definately the Home Port Inn. You can also buy live lobster, steam them at the cottage, role up your sleeves and dig in. Wonderful!! This is an outstanding place to stay if you love wildlife, nature, and natural beauty.

Summary: My husband and I have stayed several times at this same property since 1995. I love this quaint little cottage and the fact that it has a stairway down to the beach is the added plus that keeps us coming back. The stairway is long and steep and not for the faint of heart (I believe there are 44 stairs) but if you can brave the stairway to the secluded beach below it is a wonderful treat. The size of the starfish here are amazing. My husband and I have watched many eagles grow up here. Not a day goes by that we don't see several bald eagles. We also see many whales go through. You usually hear the whales before you see them. At least it gives you a chance to look for them before they go along their way. It doesn't really bother me that the cottage only has a few channels on the TV as we are usually so busy anyway. There is the lighthouse which is a little further down the road from the cottage and if you were as lucky as I was last summer, you may even get an inside tour of the lighthouse in exchange for a donation. That was the highlight of my trip last year. I had been going since 1995 and had never had a chance to see the inside. I got some lovely pictures that I cherish. You need to cross over to the lighthouse on foot at low tide and it is really not at all difficult to navigate. Just make sure that you keep an eye on the tide so you don't get stranded on the other side. The tide comes in fast and furious. We usually take one day and ride the Campobello ferry across to Deer Isle and from there take the Government Ferry to Letite, NB from there we make our way to St. Stephen or St. John which are wonderful cities to explore. Sometimes we even stay one night over there and come back the next. If you are a photographer, the Campobelloe island sunsets are just to die for. You won't be disappointed in the photography as there is always a great time to photograph, whether it's in the fog or on a nice clear sunny day. And there is an abundance if subjects whether it's architecure or flowers or a seascape. One thing you need to know is you should gas up before crossing to the island as there is no gas station on the island. The owners are wonderful and take pride in their properties and keep them clean and tastefully updated enough so as to not ruin the cottage ambiance. I'm sure that your trip will turn out as special as all of ours have been!

Summary: Great property. We saw whales, seals and dolphins from the deck. There is a great 9 hole golf course close by. It would be nice to have cable tv.There is a lobster pound a few miles away where they cook them for you. There is only one grocery store and it does not have the greatest selection.
