Positive: I liked just about everything. This is easily the best accommodations I've ever stayed at. The room was very big and clean. There was air condition, air purifier/humidifier, and a kotatsu. The food was also incredible! Dinner each night was a multi-course menu with a great balance of food. Each plate was absolutely delicious! Breakfast was just as balanced and tasty. All traditional Japanese style food. The coordination between staff members was incredible. I never had to mention which room I was in or my name. They just knew somehow. This particularly showed because they had valet parking. I walked into the lobby and asked for my car. I never mentioned my name or room but it was ready to go just a couple minutes later. The onsen was also very nice. They were also up-front about their support for English-only travelers. When I set up the reservation, they let me know that they only had a limited number of staff members that could speak English. This didn't impact my friend and I too much because I can speak a bit of Japanese and it wasn't very busy when we went. I imagine this could be a bigger issue during the busy season.

Positive: The private onsen with our room was amazing but so was the big private one that all guests can use for free without reservation- my husband and I enjoyed having the space since the room ones are small (but so convenient and lovely being outside). I have never been waited on hand and foot like this, the staff is so kind is good at what they do. The room and food were fantastic I wish I could have stayed longer.

Positive: We loved the onsen. The staff were so kind, especially Hatsuki who looked after us so attentively, translated the delicious menu and wrote us a beautiful note on departure. Drumming performance was an added delight.

Positive: Everything about this ryokan is exceptional. Elegant, personal and heartwarming. The service is probably the best I've experienced in Japan; it's personalised, helpful and friendly, without feeling overbearing. The food is absolutely amazing and the dining experience feels like you're being transported to a traditional, authentic Japan, which is a rare thing for modern ryokans to achieve. The onsen is also outstanding; the water quality, the facilities, the cleanliness, the atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Negative: Our experience was first-rate and there is absolutely nothing we didn't like about Sekitaitei Ishida.
