Positive: This is a wonderful traditional Japanese house. It's clean, quiet and very comfortable. The location is a little bit outside the city but only about 10-15 minutes walking to the temple and center. I recommend this place highly!

Positive: Such a beautiful old traditional house, felt like we stepping into a real Japanese home. Each room was exciting to explore, the simple but beautiful kitchen, the deep bathtub, the rice paper screens and very comfortable beds. Even though I only booked it a couple of days before we went, there was easy information about how to get in and, as the house was ready, we were even able to arrive a little early. It's in a peaceful residential neighbourhood with easy walks into town but also up to the edge of Nagano with views into the valley.
Negative: There was no plug in the kitchen sink. The garden could do with a tidy up.

Positive: Gorgeous property. Well looked after, lovely quiet location next to interesting spots. Interior was beautiful and the garden at the back had lovely trees and plants. The staff at check in were so friendly and helpful. As we didn’t speak Japanese they also helped us with a local booking at the onsen, which was ideal.
Negative: Gets a little cold (we went in April) but heaters were provided which made it more comfortable. The check in desk is quite far from the property so that is a bit of a nuisance when you arrive.
Summary: Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend.

Positive: Amazing ambience in this restored antique villa, with enough modern facilities where needed such as great hot water pressure in the shower and room heaters in all the rooms
Negative: Liked everything! Took a while to figure out that a couple of the room lights were turned on and off with a remote control, but we discovered how to work those in the end.

Positive: We loved staying at Showrai-An, it was the highlight of our trip to Japan. Stunning property with beautiful traditional elements also all mod cons for our comfort. Very tastefully decorated with all amenities you could ever need. We were very close to the famous temples and fabulous restaurants. We also had the beauty of snow on our first night, a day to relax, and then sunny sunny day trip to visit Snow Monkey Park.
Negative: Nothing ! Everything was magic, even my two geeky teenagers loved the home and the comforts. We can’t wait to return one day and recommend to our friends and family.
