Positive: The receptionist, Putra, was lovely & went out of his way. The guides, Augus & Primo, arranged via Smileys to go up volcano by motorcycle were local & genuine, a pleasure. The breakfast (& advertised bread) at home stay was fantastic!
Negative: Room was clean & spacious but compared to others in this price bracket was not as modern and expensive.

Positive: Highly recommend! We stayed at Smiley's Homestay just one night and took a trip with Smiley to the vulcano and we truly regret we did not stay longer! The place is located centrally, next to down town, just a walking distance! The room was fully equipped with private bathroom. Smiley and his wife and friends are extremely nice and helpful. We felt very comfortable from the moment we stepped in, we had a great, really! great sunrise trip to the vulcano with further sightseeing afterwards! Smiley is a very knowledgeable and has a great expertise of the place so it's a pleasure to have him as a guide! Surly come back, and surly stay a bit longer next time!

Positive: Good location, helpful with booking a tour and transfer.
Negative: Very noisy building work next to property, very noisy road. Away from main homestay. Tour seemed expensive for what it was. Room very basic. Bathroom pipes were loud and it flooded. Staff not the friendliest.

Positive: The owner is super nice, she was giving good advices, and she can organise whatever you want. Breakfast was excellent. The trip organised to the vulcano was great for my boy. The room was very clean.
Negative: It was a super basic room, with tiny toilet and a shower just above the toilet. It was also very loud with traffic from the road, and no view. But it was clean, so ok for 2 nights

Positive: A very good place to meet other travellers, with communal breakfast and dinners possible. My room was across the road and it’s a bit a lot of the drawer which one you get mine on the second floor with view of the volcanoes was particularly nice. :-) And Cecelia are lovely people, and Cecilia is a great cook!
Negative: The lack of transparency on prices. Despite asking, I didn’t find out the cost of breakfast (75k) or dinner (85k) until the last day. The price on trips is not very transparent either and different people were quoted different prices for the same trip. There doesn’t seem to be a reduction for groups. Overall it’s a great place to stay, but it can be a little frustrating if you don’t just want to “go with the flow” or if budget is tight!

Positive: I took my husband and daughter to Smileys Homestay when we went to Brastagi and had the best time. Mr. Smiley took us all over Tongging and gave us several once in a life time experiences. When we return to Brastagi there is no question Smileys Homestay is where we will go.

Positive: Smiley and his partner take the 'home' in homestay to another level. They know everything you need to know about Berastagi and the wider region and were happy to help. Rooms were spacious and clean on arrival. Their breakfast is probably going to be the nicest one you'll find in North-Sumatra. I happened to have my birthday while staying at Smiley's and they surprised me with a birthday cake!
