Care was taken to preserve the history of this building which at one time served as a church and later as a schoolhouse for Belfort. In addition modern comforts like radiant in-floor heating and solar thermal domestic hot-water were implemented to meld the old and new in a complimentary way.
Just 1.5 hours north of Utica and 2 hours from Syracuse the Old Belfort Schoolhouse offers a quiet respite from the modern world. For those seeking a get-away that is something different than the crowds of Old Forge, this accessible Adirondack vacation rental offers wonderful access to the best of the Adirondacks with the comforts of a beautiful home to stay in.

Summary: We were looking for a place to do some hiking and kayaking in the Adirondacks and found this place. It is an old Schoolhouse that is well restored. Almost everything you need is there, towels, bed linens, dishes, pots, pans, etc. There are games and 2 puzzles on the shelf. There is a nice place to sit in the spacious backyard with a place to make a fire, adjacent to woods. One of the old comments mentions a hot tub and fire wood but that was only true under the prior owners. There is a window air conditioner that can cool the whole schoolhouse. We didn't use it most of the time but the school house is right near the road and can be loud, especially on Saturday nights with lots of ATVs. The Schoolhouse is right adjacent to one of the put ins on the Beaver River. It is a bit of a hike down to the river but worth the effort. The owners were awesome about renting us 4 kayaks for $20 a piece one day to kayak down the river. We wanted a longer ride so we went past the High Falls Dam, which required a challenging portage of 350 yards with a steep, long downward stretch. Thanks again to the owners, we were able to leave the kayaks near Bridge Street in Croghan. A really fun, beautiful trip but not easy. We drove about an hour to go on the 1,000 Islands Tour in Alexandria Bay, drove about 30 minutes to Whetstone Gulf State Park for a really nice 5.5 mile hike around a gorge ($7 admission charge), drove about 30 minutes to Tug Estates for a wine tasting and nice lunch in a pretty setting, drove about an hour to Dexter to go river tubing (also fun but work at the end as the headwinds and the current were causing a standstill), and about 20 minutes to find a place to walk along a river off of Long Pond Falls (we parked near an old camp, I think Gunther, with waterfalls right next door and found a not very well kept path down to Iowa Falls, but again beautiful and worth the trip) and about 2 minutes to the area behind the dam across the street, which is a short walk but goes right along the white water section. I go into all this detail because it did take a fair amount of effort to find trails to hike. Owners were again helpful There is a place for food within walking distance (The Belfort Inn) but more like pizza, burgers and chicken sandwiches, and alcohol. The other two times we went out we ended up traveling 30 min and 55 min to get to places that were open and met our needs (vegetarian). Well stocked groceries 25 min away.

Summary: Amazing home and well appointed and clean. We were looking for a home in the adirondacks on the water for kayaking and floating (pond or lake). This was not exactly the nature getaway we were seeking. Hosts were super helpful and made our trip enjoyable though.
