High Country Haven is a spacious log cabin 30 minutes from downtown Boone and 45 minutes from Watauga Lake. Bristol, Tennessee, is about an hour away. Elk Knob State Park is nearby, with hiking, snowshoeing, and other activities. Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, and Grandfather Mountain are all within an hour from High Country Haven.

The main floor living room is luxuriously equipped with comfortable leather furnishings around a stone gas fireplace. It opens to the dining area, a large, mounted Smart TV, and a coffee bar. Stainless appliances complete the kitchen, and the covered deck includes a gas grill and outdoor dining.
The upstairs landing makes for a cozy reading place. It leads to the king master bedroom with a TV, electric fireplace, and a private bathroom. Enjoy the gas fire pit on the third-level balcony. There are two additional bedrooms on the main floor, one with a queen bed and one with two twins. They share a hallway bathroom. The lower level family room has two queen-sized futons and a queen air mattress which can host two people each. High Country Haven can accommodate 12 guests, assuming two (2) people on each futon and the air mattress, which might be tight for adults but comfortable for children. Plan accordingly. The family room also includes a foosball table, arcade game, Smart TV, work desk, gas fireplace, and a full bathroom. The lower level deck accessed through the family room has seating and a hot tub overlooking seasonal views.

With a chiminea-style fire pit just beside the main level deck, central heating and a/c, wifi, and programming or streaming on the Smart TVs throughout, High Country Haven has everything needed for a mountain getaway with all the comforts of home. Up to two dogs are welcome with your reservation but are required to be kept off all furnishings, beds, and linens. Additional pet fees apply. The sloping gravel driveway leads to a spacious gravel parking area. While the HOA maintains the roads, winter travelers should be prepared with 4WD or AWD vehicles and chains.

Summary: We had a great time, however the gate code worked sometimes and not all of the time. We were lucky the night we got there( and it was late) a person that lives past the gate let us in and helped us up. The code worked fine during the day but not at night. The support staff were on point when we called about other issues and even got a maintenance man out to the property. Overall we had a very good time. I regret to say that we think we forgot to turn the dishwasher on even though we loaded it and put the tablet in. Please accept our many apologies. The property was well maintained and very clean. We were unable to leave the garbage in any receptacle as stated in the check out instructions because we couldn’t find one so we brought it back with us. Thanks for the use of this beautiful home.

Summary: This is a very nice place to stay but if you are staying for to go skiing at the local mountains the distance posted is not accurate. We as many often do choose this place based on location and it was very unpleasant to find out once there it was much farther from the ski resorts. Overall the place was very clean, nice interior and offerings to entertainment, and pretty views. But again if you are choosing based on location from ski resorts it’s not the best option.
