L'Eyssalle is an old stone farmhouse with more recent additions, set in 20 hectares of its own vineyard and woodland; total rural peace but on the outskirts of famous Monbazillac village. It caters well for 3 families, or for up to 14 adults. There are terraced lawns and a roofed terrace area, with 2 barbecues, which can seat up to 20 people. There is also a second covered terrace by the pool. Well equipped and comfortably furnished to a very high standard, the house is like a second family home with a large protected and alarmed swimming pool and a hard tennis court. The central core of the house is a huge kitchen/dining/living room with a soaring beamed ceiling which has recently been completely refurbished. The table can seat up to 14 and the sofas and chairs are wonderfully comfortable in front of a roaring fire if the weather is cold. A separate book-lined sitting room has sofas and a wood burning stove along with a television and DVD player. There is also disabled ground floor access. There is a travel cot, plus a stairgate and high chair.
L'Eyssalle is only a 10-15 minute drive from Bergerac Airport, so is incredibly easy to reach, but really does represent the perfect escape from the world. It sits in its own valley, with wonderful views and is immensely peaceful. It is hot in the summer and many people spend long hours lounging by the pool. But at the other times of year, or for the more energetic, there are a huge number of other attractions; playing tennis at the house, wine-tasting, wandering up to Monbazillac for a long lunch at the rather nice but very simple bistro, an even longer dinner in one of the many fantastic restaurants nearby, a quick trip into Bergerac (a fabulous medieval town) for a drink or something to eat. Nearby, there is also golf, canoeing (incredible fun with the kids), wine-tasting (and buying), a tour of one of many historic châteaux and towns, a leisurely walk through the woods and vineyards (there are some particularly wonderful long hikes), and fantastic markets if you love fresh produce and like to cook.
The owners particularly love going down to the house slightly off season. It is truly wonderful, for example in May, June, late September and October, particularly for groups of adults. If you like hiking, playing tennis, long lunches, wine-tasting and open fires, it's a perfect break.

Summary: We stayed here in late August as a group of seven adults and four children (aged 3 - 8). The size of both the house and grounds meant that everyone could have their own space, while at the same time there were several great communal areas to congregate. There was great space for the children to run about, while still being able to easily keep an eye on them, without having to get up from a glass of Monbazillac wine. In particular the pool area was very safe and well thought-out; something which was very important to us, having a three-year old with us; the area had a locked gate and a working pool alarm, which meant that none of the children could enter the area without an adult. The description of the house was accurate, and the property was spotlessly clean. The information given to us prior to arriving was very extensive and went above and beyond what we would have expected, even giving details of local walks and restaurants. We all had an amazing week and hope to return one day.

Summary: We have just come back from a wonderful week in L’Eyssalle. The house and grounds were perfect for a party of 10 family and friends. Amazing swimming pool with loads of sitting out area and surrounding lawns to play a variety of games. The house itself has a huge well equipped kitchen/living area where everyone can get together. We ate outside under the veranda for every meal. L'Eyssalle is only about 12 minutes from Bergerac airport which is ideal, yet when you arrive at the house you are within tranquil countryside. Bergerac itself is a beautiful town and easy to access - definitely worth spending time there to eat/shop/explore and of course go to the markets. We went to the Sunday eve market in Monbazillac - a great local fest of food and drink, seated on tressle tables in the little park in the middle of the village. Good supermarkets nearby for all our groceries as Monbazillac has no shop. Numerous vineyards and local markets in the surrounding villages to visit. All in all we had a fantastic time and would love to go back.

Summary: We stayed at L'Eyssalle for a week in July and it was truly wonderful. The house is beautiful and in a lovely rural and peaceful location surrounded by vineyards. All the rooms were a good size with quality beds and the kitchen had everything we could have wanted, including two fridges. There was a great BBQ, the pool is huge with fab shade options, lots of loungers and an outdoor sofa. The tennis court (while definitely needing a few repairs) was only a step away from the house and made for brilliant family entertainment. We had such a special time together enjoying everything the house offered and exploring the local area. It is a gem and we would love to come back, thank you!

Everything about it is home from home, yet at the same time it oozes glamorous charm. The swimming pool is perfect, with plenty of sun loungers and a shaded area. The playroom is stacked full of games: ping pong, tennis rackets, volleyball etc so the children were occupied with a different game everyday. There is so much to do at the house for both adults and children we rarely ventured out - but there is lots to do in the area. We canoed, went to Issigeac market which is excellent and pottered round chateaus (wine producers Cyrano de Bergerac at chateau de Corbiac was a particular favourite) and medieval towns. Every room was clean, smart and comfortable - the double en suite above the playroom is very special. We went with our whole family and would definitely like to return. I would recommend it to anyone!

Summary: I have to declare an interest: my cousin bought L'Eyssalle and undertook the conversion, working at it with oving perseverance over a number of years. Our family have been there on several occasions in the past, most recently in 2007. We have always enjoyed our visits. We were impressed this time by how well the house and grounds had been maintained since we were there last. Many improvements have been made, and you get the impression that everything has been thought through and executed carefully. The house is very easy to reach from Bergerac Airport. We picked up our rental cars at the airport, and were in the house less than an hour after the time our plane from Southampton touched down in Bergerac. The house is an old farmhouse. It is spacious and comfortable - meticulously cleaned and maintained. There were nine in our party, and we could easily have accommodated 5-6 more. There are numerous bathrooms, and two of the rooms are fully en-suite. The kitchen contains a sturdy gas cooker and a large fridge/freezer. There is a dishwasher and clothes washing machine. The property is maintained by Mark and Adele who live locally. Adele came on Wednesday to see that everything was all right with us and to mow the grass. The swimming pool is well managed, clean and extremely secure (a relief to us as we had three children in our part under the age of 5). We enjoyed various games on the lawns, and tennis several evenings when the sun was a bit less fierce. We made several expeditions to Monbazillac (wine tasting at the Chateau) and Bergerac, including a Sunday morning visit to the church of Notre Dame, where the organist was excelling himself. There were a couple of evening visits to restaurants, and a train trip to Paris for two of us one day (leaving Bergerac at 5.30 am, returning the same day at 11.30 pm). Otherwise we spent most of our time lazing by the pool and enjoying leisurely meals on the terrace. Altogether it was a most enjoyable week, and one that we would love to repeat at some point in the future. We recommend L'Eyssalle without any reservation to any who are fortunate enough to be able to go and stay there.
