Cantobre Cottage | Stunning Valley Views from our 3* Gîte bordering the Cévennes and Grands Causses

3 Bedroom Cottage in Cantobre, Nant

Most people who see the views from our gites tell us that we live in paradise! A swimming pool is not necessary here, the river is just below us, a breeze blows most of the time and in summer our gites are cooled by an underfloor cooling system.
Both gîtes (or self-catering holiday rentals) have stunning views of the Dourbie valley from their private terraces and access to our 1250 m2 garden that includes a pétanque/boules court, a grassed area and our own rock that has the best views of Cantobre and a 360° panoramic view of the Trèvezel and Dourbie valleys and the 3 limestone plateaux (Causse Bégon, Causse Noir and Causse du Larzac) that surround us. There is also a small, terracotta tiled, north facing terrace with views that equal the stunning views from each gîte’s private terrace. The gîtes have very well equipped kitchens, washing and drying machines and for the occasional rainy day the living rooms are equipped with Terrestrial Television which provides French channels and a Satellite receiver to watch UK Freesat channels. We share our own library with you so you can read a book or two while you stay with us, the library also contains many games and puzzles, and CDs and DVDs that you can play on the DVD player provided. Free secure high speed WiFi internet is also provided. Parking is not available in our mediaeval village, the nearest is 100m from the gite.
The gorges and valleys of southeast Aveyron make deep cuts into the wild limestone plateaux (Causses) of the Grand Causses Regional Natural Park and the better known Cévennes National Park creating an area of outstanding natural beauty and a feeling of being in a land that time forgot. Still standing are fortified villages later maintained by the Knights Hospitaller but originally built by the Knights Templar who probably also helped in the fortification of our village, Cantobre. It’s an area rich in wildlife of all sorts, from wild boar, deer, beavers, eagles and four sorts of vulture, to orchids and other wild flowers. We have seen more species of butterflies in and around Cantobre than are in the whole of the UK.
We used to come to the area for our holidays and it’s perfectly situated for a wide variety of visits and activities. It’s now our home and we are on hand to help you with your luggage and shopping when you arrive and to make your stay more enjoyable.
You could spend a holiday here without having to use your car, hiking in the hills, walking down to the river Dourbie for a swim in the crystal clear water or a spot of sunbathing or maybe fly fishing for the local zebra trout; alternatively, just stay in our secluded garden with 360° views of the surrounding countryside or relax on your gîte’s terrace with a bowl of olives, a glass or two of wine and our bird watching telescope.
If you did want to drive somewhere, 45 minutes north takes you to the Tarn Gorge, the northern boundary of France’s Mediterranean climate. Also a favourite route for cyclists, 30 minutes west down the Dourbie Valley is Millau, a big centre for outdoor sports such as paragliding, canoeing, caving and climbing (we also have our own climbing wall at Cantobre) with an Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool, and it’s our nearest big town with hypermarkets and a large outdoor market, it’s also home to the Millau Viaduct, the world’s tallest bridge. 5 minutes to the south takes you up the Dourbie Valley to the 10th century village of Nant with restaurants and bars, our nearest shops and market; in summer there are free music events every week. Another 25 minutes southwards takes you out of the causses and the mountain air and into the Languedoc, France’s largest wine production region; another 45 minutes and you’re at the Mediterranean coast!
There are lots of family visits to go on, boat trips down the river Tarn, caves and caverns with stalagmites and stalactites, visiting Roquefort cheese caves, the reptile house, wild animal parks and Micropolis, a whole centre about insects; there are even Knights and jousting tournaments; all are favourites places to visit when our young grandson comes to stay.

Summary: Before we arrived, we received useful instructions on what to do/where to park/phone number - and this information turned out to be very helpful. Lionel and Peggy are exceptional hosts. We received a warm welcome, and assistance bringing our luggage to the apartment, where there was a very acceptable bottle of rose waiting for us. The apartment was clean and the beds very comfortable. Lionel and Peggy were always available to help/advise us, but were never intrusive. They took us for a very informative walk in the location and around the interesting village. We were shown native orchids which we would not otherwise noticed. The eagles/vultures could be seen soaring in the sky, but unfortunately we never got close for a good look. Highly recommended place to stay, but 2 nights was not enough. Very close to Millau - the bridge is well worth seeing. Thanks Lionel and Peggy for great stay :)

Summary: We loved our stay in Cantobre, and this property was a perfect base of operations for exploring the area. The property itself is beautiful, and the house is spotless, with everything you could possibly need for your stay. Lionel and Peggy are so friendly, and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable—everything from the offer of fresh eggs and produce from their hens and garden, to individual maps of trails to bike and hike, tied out with hand held GPS to take with you. Both are incredibly knowledgeable about what to see and do in the Aveyron. But it’s the sweeping view down the valley from your private veranda that make this spot over the top perfect. We are coming back in 2019 and can’t wait! Sarah & Tom R.

Summary: This is the second time we have stayed in this gite & it was just as good as the first. The accommodation is in a fabulous location overlooking the Dourbie river & has everything you need for a relaxing self-catering holiday - right down to the washing powder & dishwasher tablets! The owners Lionel & Peggy are a lovely couple & always available to offer advice regarding local amenities etc. Although it is a short steep walk to the gite & you can't park outside, Lionel is there with his car to fetch the luggage at the beginning of your stay & return it at the end. If you are lucky enough to be there when the chickens are laying, they are a must! I would certainly recommend these gites to anyone visiting the area, in fact we have already broke for later this year. We didn't feel the need to eat out much but can recommend The Papillon Hotel/Restaurant a short drive away in St Jean De Bruel.

Summary: Castel de Cantobre is a magical place to stay in a part of France that never ceases to amaze us with its beautiful and varied scenery, picturesque villages and cultural and historical perspectives. The comfortable accommodation affords stunning views of the valley to the south and a short walk to the top of the gardens provides an amazing vista in all directions - a perfect place to share a bottle of wine or play a game of pétanque (watched by the chickens). The hosts are never intrusive but always friendly, charming and helpful when needed. We recommend Castel de Cantobre unreservedly - of all the places we visit, it comes at the top.

Summary: The gite was fantastic stuck high on the top of a limestone escarpment. It was clean and spacious, with a fantastic shower that never ran cold. The hosts Lionel and Peggy were very helpful. The view from the rear garden from the top of the mushroom lump of limestone is awesome. If you like wine, just ask Lionel. The walks around Cantobre are fantastic and the air quality lovely. A visit to the Millau town and viaduct is a must, and driving thru the gorges is amazing, you might be lucky enough to get close to flying vultures!

Summary: This is the second time we have stayed with Lionel and Peggy. The gite is wonderful, its clean and well maintained with a lovely veranda to eat meals from with fantastic views of the gorge. Lionel and Peggy are such wonderful hosts, very knowledgeable and helpful. There is also plenty to do in the area, caves, canoeing walking, visiting Roquefort to see how the cheese is made etc. The gite has all your need, we mixed our time there eating out or making use of the gites kitchen and using vedge and eggs from the gite. We will certainly return again.

Summary: Although we know Cantobre well, and keep going back, this was our first time in the larger of the two gites. It is comfortable and well equipped in every way. It was, if anything, larger than the two of us needed - but we booked it because the smaller Gite was already taken. This area is so special to us I hardly want to tell you about it.
