Positive: The food was good, lots of options at every meal. Staff was accommodating and helpful. And the grounds are stunning. Fireplaces everywhere are a very nice touch.
Negative: Some of the facilities are old and could do with updating, especially in the bathrooms. And I found the beds a bit small.
Summary: Great getaway at a good cost, I will be back.

Positive: Beautiful place, green, well maintained, wonderful views, very quiet. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food included in the 'full board' deal was varied, of good quality and came in generous portions. Wifi was very good. Rooms were large (although certainly a little old-fashioned/could do with sprucing up, but for us that was part of the charm). Walking in the private reserve (directly accessible on foot from the property's gardens) among zebras and giraffes was a unique experience. Plenty of wildlife within the grounds of the hotel too!
Negative: Prices for activities for non-Kenya residents (quoted in dollars) and were considerably higher than prices for Kenya residents (quoted in shillings). I know this is the norm for national park fees, but we found it a bit odd for hotel services. Moreover, the prices were quoted on a two-sided piece of laminated card in the rooms: one side in dollars, one side in shillings. It was not explained on this sheet of paper that the USD price referred to non-Kenya residents and the KES price to Kenya residents, and honestly we only looked at the KES prices (we knew the KES/EUR exchange rate and to the extent that I noticed dollar pricing I just assumed it was a courtesy for guests unaware of the exchange rate). Finally, whereas it's clear what "residents" and "non-residents" mean in a national park context, in a hotel context everywhere in the world, "resident" means someone staying at the hotel, and "non-resident" means someone not staying at the hotel. Staff should be aware of this, as it was confusing when we were told we were being charged "non-resident" rates, without making it clear they meant "non-Kenya resident". (This was even more confusing because some of the hotel's amenities, e.g. the pool and the gym, were classified as only available to 'residents', which in this case of course meant hotel guests). All the above stated, the staff reduced the prices when we complained at check-out (as we genuinely wouldn't have done some of the activities at 3-6 times the price), so all was well that ended well, but non-Kenya resident guests should be aware of this!
Summary: If you're looking to stay just outside the Aberdare National Park, you should stay here

Having the fire lit made for a very cozy night The staff was amazing, very friendly, professional, cared about us being comfortable and happy. We had a wonderful stay We met the new manager, Dries, and enjoyed our conversation with him. Just an amazing stay. We hated to leave!!

Positive: The open fire in the room made for cosy evenings. Very helpful staff and wonderful views. Enjoyed a swim in the pool. Great value stay. Has huge potential to be a top quality accommodation.
Negative: Some areas are in need of an upgrade. Food was ok but not amazing. Parts of the garden need to be improved visually.
Summary: A place with lots of potential and just under new management - I’ll be revisiting to see how it has improved.
