Barlaston Hotel | The Upper House

Hotel in Barlaston, Stoke on Trent

In a peaceful, rural location, this country house was originally built in 1845. Today, the house has been converted into a luxurious privately owned hotel with many beautiful original features. The Upper House is a former Wedgwood residence, built for Josiah Wedgwood's grandson, Francis Wedgwood. The house still retains its original charm, with extensive period decoration and traditional character. It is also a highly demanded wedding venue. There are 24 rooms with attached bathroom, all with TVs, telephones, tea/coffee making facilities and hairdryers. Some of the rooms have balconies and although there is no smoking in the house, smoking is permitted on the balconies. Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel. A full English breakfast is included in the price. There are 2 comfortable lounges and in the chillier winter months, guests can relax by the real log fire. There is also a patio area and a conservatory at the rear of the hotel, both overlooking the beautiful gardens. A elevator serves all floors. The Upper House has a quiet, restful location, but is just a few miles south of Stoke-on-Trent, within easy reach of the A50, the M6 motorway and the region’s major road network. Reviewer Type: Couple
Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: The building was beautiful inside and out (Barlaston has always been a special place for me). The food was excellent and all the staff were great.
Negative: The room we stayed in was right above the main entrance and that heavy door was really loud when it shut. There was an event on during the first night so the door was constantly opening and closing. Not as much of an issue during the second night though so this was the only negative experience.
Summary: Excellent experience. Would definitely stay again.

Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: Character and history. Great breakfast. Beautiful gardens and grounds and views. Shower was great too.
Negative: The room was small and plain (magnolia drench) bed a bit hard. Ceilings were low in some corridors and needed some padding to prevent me hitting my head hard. Air fresheners were plug in devices and a bit full on. Thin walls, cheap doors - listening to too much in the room next door.
Summary: Would go again but need a different room.

Positive: Beautiful building some nice staff
Negative: No quiet room to relax in that wasn’t busy all the time Bed had springs sticking out and was painful to sleep on staff not interested
Summary: Disappointed as booked as a quiet country hotel to switch off for a few days but that wasn’t to be as music blasting out
