Eagle Lake is known as one of the quieter lakes in the region with an abundance of wildlife, tranquil panoramic views and ample outdoor recreation activities by water or land. Eagle Lake features 410-acres of crystal-clear water formed on a plateau with an elevation of 951 feet and is 2.5 miles in length. The source of water that creates Eagle Lake includes an underground aquafer which is why it is known for its pristine waters. Loons, Deer, Brown Trout, American Eagles, Largemouth Bass, Otters, Osprey, Green Frogs, Racoons, Beavers, Moose and more are some of the wildlife that you'll see when visiting.
In addition to all of the recreational activities just steps outside the home, the area offers endless hiking trails, historic landmarks including the famous Fort Ticonderoga located only 10 miles from the home, the Star Trek Museum located 8 miles from the home, downtown Schroon Lake located 12 miles from the home and a variety of farm stands and apple orchards selling locally grown produce.
MORE ABOUT US:
Originally, the home was built during the Gilded Age (early 1900’s) as a private Great Camp home to the Spaulding family. Eighty-five years later, our family purchased the property and did a complete renovation. We were able to keep many of the original features while modernizing much of it to today’s comforts. It’s a unique blend of old and new; keeping the character of being an Adirondack Gilded Age Great Camp while not sacrificing any of the modern conveniences of today.
WHAT IS AN ADIRONDACK GREAT CAMP?
Early 19th century architects created function from form, taking design cues from nature to establish one of the most recognizable architectural styles of the era – Adirondack Rustic. Expansive lodging compounds, referred to as Great Camps, were designed to blend into their natural surroundings, offering rustic yet luxurious retreats for the Gilded Age elite. Adirondack Great Camps were as synonymous with the Gilded Age as the names Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. Designed to blend into their natural surroundings, these sprawling compounds spanned the most coveted shorelines of the Adirondacks – as well as some of the most remote. The Great Camp on Eagle Lake is one of the homes in the Adirondacks to have this shared history.
SOME OF OUR HOME'S HISTORY
The Spaulding Family purchased the land at the beginning of the Gilded Age and built it section-by-section. At one time, the room we refer to as the "Great Room" was the entire structure. As our family did the renovations, we could see and date when each new section was built from the stud work and around window frames where period newspapers were used as insulation.
Due to the condition of the house and grounds in 1982 when it was purchased, some of the original features of the home were not salvageable. For example, the outside of the home was once all half pine logs which we had to replace because of water rot. However, on the enclosed porch, the interior walls still have the original pine log siding that once encompassed the whole home.
The boat house you see today is actually the second boat house built by the Spaulding's. The first one was destroyed during an early spring landslide off the mountain behind the home that pushed it onto the partially-still-frozen lake. Rather than remove the damaged one, the Spaulding family allowed it to sink to the bottom of the cove and built a new one in its place. When you snorkel in front of the current boat house, you can see some of the original boat house's remints including beams and stonework. One of the advantages of having the original boat house underwater is that it created an ideal habitat for many species of local fish, making the beach area a great fishing location.
Wherever possible, original features of the Spaulding's Great Adirondack Camp was kept during the renovations including the fireplaces, hard wood floors, French doors, built-in bookshelves, Gazebo, Boat House, and so much more. For 8 years following the purchase of the home in 1982, the whole family worked together to complete all the renovations. It was a labor of love then and continues to be some 38 years later as we have continued to improve and maintain the beauty of this Adirondack Great Camp.
If you are looking for a unique location for your Adirondack vacation, this location is ideal for making memories that will last a lifetime.

Summary: The cabin hit the historic family vibe of a beloved family gathering place, and we are forever grateful for the generosity of the hosts for sharing their treasured family home. Eagle Lake is a beautiful, calm lake, great for swimming and family get togethers, and we enjoyed the use of the kayaks, the screened porch, and the well stocked kitchen, not to mention the cozy seating all over the house that was great for reading and playing the large collection of games. Old building issues dogged us a bit, but the quirky personal assortment of treasures gathered through time was delightful. There were essentially three different bedrooms--a corner bedroom that overlooks the lake, a second bedroom on the lake side, and the family suite that sleeps 7 across the hall on the road side, consisting of the trundle bed, the bunk bed, and a queen bed through another door. The fans provided were lifesavers against the heat, though more screens and operational windows would have helped too. The house backs up to a relatively busy highway with loud and frequent logging trucks at all hours. It has been divided between the main part that looks toward the main lake, with apartments on one end that overlook the swim/boat launch area, all of which share the kayaks, float, firepit, screened porch and boathouse area. Thankfully the families that rented those places were easygoing with the shared space and we enjoyed lots of water time without any problems.Kayak trips and swims to the nearby islands were daily adventures, and nearby New York State Parks were gold--especially Crown Point, which is a pre-Revolutionary War English fort and the site of an even older French Fort, next to a lovely bridge that leads to Vermont. Of course, we had to try cider donuts at Gunnison Lakeshore Orchards on a day work was being done on the house. In general, the hosts were very responsive to issues that came up, and wonderful about providing information that made our stay memorable. They could not have been nicer and do everything they can to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable.

Summary: We had a wonderful week, despite not great weather, and found the hosts to be very responsive to our questions. You are right on a lake with a fun trampoline in the water! The house was stocked with more spices than I've ever seen outside of a supermarket, the floats and kayaks were great, and the first floor space was huge! Unfortunately, though the house is listed as 5 bedrooms, you need to read and re-read the description to figure out that the "family suite" is really 3 bedrooms in one! Although you can close the door to the queen size bed room, you have to walk through the other "two" rooms ( it's really one room with two sections) to get to the queen bedroom. So unless you know that, and we didn't, you can find sleeping arrangements incredibly challenging. It's also on a road with no sidewalks and trucks do drive by quite often.

Summary: We were charmed by the history of the building but fell in love with the screened room by the lake. What a wonderful place for afternoon wine, cheese and crackers while watching the light play on the surface of the lake. Mary was very welcoming. Note: The kid rooms in the 3 bedroom 'family friendly suite' does not offer kids privacy. Our teens weren't thrilled with this but adjusted well to the challenge.

Summary: Mary was a very responsive host who provided a wonderful lakeside house. We had 4 generations for our stay and everyone enjoyed themselves. The house is large and has plenty of space to spread out. The kitchen has everything a large group needs in terms of utensils and cooking equipment. There are many kayaks, a rowboat, and paddleboat and plenty of water-accessible places to explore. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet, historic, well-equiped place in the Adirondacks.

Summary: We were privileged to spend a week at this absolutely fabulous property on Eagle Lake. Beginning with the booking process and throughout our stay, the owners were exceptionally helpful and responsive! While there with our entire family, we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary as well as our twin sons’ 41st Birthdays. The Camp on Eagle Lake was perfect; offering swimming, kayaking, canoeing and fishing. We cooked in the very well equipped kitchen and barbecued on the propane grill. Nearly every night we enjoyed the fire pit at the waters edge. There was literally “something for everyone”. Our stay could not have been more perfect and we highly, highly, highly recommend this true treasure!

Summary: If you're looking for a place to enjoy lakeside living & being on the lake then this is the place. The lake frontage is grassy and down to the lake so you can walk right in to the lake. The owners provide kayaks, a canoe, a rowboat and a pedal boat along with life vests. It was so nice that we were all able to go out on the lake together. The water trampoline was also a big hit with the kids. Between kayaking, fishing and swimming everyone was pleasantly busy and enjoying themselves. Turtle Island was a favorite place to go to. On the grassy area by the lake there are several heavy duty sturdy wooden Adirondack chairs to sit in and read or just watch the tranquility of the lake. There is also a wooden swing that sits by the lake along with a picnic table. To round out this amazing space is a fabulous fire pit. This is a big fire pit and it has a grate that fits on it so you can cook over it. We cooked homemade pizzas over the fire on the grate one night and they were hands down the best pizza's! The owners also provide and keep stocked the firewood so you do not have to worry about finding overpriced bundles of firewood to enjoy the fire pit with. Honestly, this lake front area was our absolutely favorite place and we spent the majority of our time there. The Lodge is very interesting & full of history. It has all the modern conveniences but maintains the rustic Adirondack lodge feel. We loved it! There was plenty of space for everyone. The dining room table was huge and we were all able to sit around it together. The kids loved the giant chess board and the darts. While we did not spend much time inside the lodge we enjoyed the look and feel of it. Outside there is a gas grill for grilling along with a large picnic table. Most of our dinners were spent there. The owners were fabulous with communication and provided a letter that lists things to pack, recreational activities near there, hiking trails, items provided in the lodge, places with their website links on things to do in or near the area and lists of restaurants, and grocery stores. It was very informative and it was nice to have all that information in one place. The owners also provide so much and do everything they can to ensure your stay is enjoyable. This was hands down our favorite family vacation and we did not want to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and found it so peaceful and calming. It was exactly what we needed and we fully enjoyed our time there.
