a vacation.”a perfect family getaway”
We found our calling for a getaway purely by accident wanting to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city with our dogs. A few clicks on the website that Craig Newmark founded, we found us a nice cottage on the Esopus creek where we spent the day catching up on conversations and swimming with the dogs in between our wine therapy. At one point, we looked at each other and our happy pooches and said to each other “We should do this every weekend".
And so we did….and found “Chez Rive Gauche" a simple, warm and very inviting waterfront getaway a short 90 minute drive from NYC.
So if you dream about escaping from a busy work week to relax by the water; canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, watching breathtaking sunsets and beautiful starry nights, Chez Rive Gauche is the perfect getaway for you.
“Chez", as we lovingly call it, sits on the beautiful Esopus creek and is fully furnished with global and vintage finds. This charming cottage has two bedrooms, a spacious living room and a well equipped kitchen combined with a dining room. Each of the bedrooms are outfitted with queen beds complete with organic sheets and down comforters. The mudroom leads you to the spacious outdoor deck with a dining area to enjoy views of the creek and the farm across while the sounds of the occasional train reminds you of the french countryside . Its complete with another welcoming deck right on the water plus a private dock( seasonal) and canoe for your exclusive enjoyment. The property is fenced in so your four legged companion will be safe but getting them away from the fun in the water is a totally different matter.
While you may not want to leave the cottage and the never ending fun “creek" side, there are a number of historic towns like Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties and Rhinebeck within 10 miles to enjoy festivals, flea markets, restaurants, farmers markets, shopping and antiquing.
If winter sports are your thrill of choice, Hunter Mountain and Wyndham are a short drive away. Depending on the season, this 5 miles stretch of the creek freezes solid, providing an excellent opportunity to ice fish and skate if you are up for an adventure.
All of these aspects are what makes Chez Rive Gauche so unique so what are you waiting for.
Important considerations before making a reservation:
Our goal is to give you an unforgettable experience, we really want you to enjoy your stay as much as we have had living here.
The cottage faces the creek. The creek is deep and its something to keep in mind, when you venture into the water.
We live in the country and you might encounter an occasional spider, files, and other creatures to varying degrees. We do not use poison on the main level as we have pets
We are dog owners and the cottage is pet friendly. If you are allergic to pets, please take this into consideration. As much as we try to get every bit of fur out, there might be some fur that skipped our broom.
The cottage is fenced on three sides (fourth being the water) there might be a gap where the fence and water meet, so if you have very curious pets, its something to consider especially if the pet is left unattended.
The cottage has a septic, so please do not flush anything other than body waste and minimal tissue. I also provide organic/biodegradable shampoo, conditioner and body wash
Our cottage has town water which is safe to drink
Noises - Living on the water brings about its own set of noises. Besides the ducks quacking, the fish jumping, you will also hear the train. Towards the front of the cottage runs a goods train track. The goods train passes by and there is no fixed schedule. Kids love the train and some adults say it reminds them of their childhood or a french countryside. Whatever the case maybe, goods traveling by train is good for the economy and the environment. If you think the train will disturb you during your stay, our cottage might not be the right fit for you.
We also do not have a dishwasher or laundry facilities. ( a Laundromat is a five min drive away) If you are staying for more than a week, fresh linens and towels will be provided.
TV has only Netflix ( no cable tv )
Once you book you will receive a simple contract/ agreement. The booking will be considered complete once I receive the signed agreement back with the names of all guests.
The cottage is within a 20 min drive to downtown Saugerties, Kingston, Rhinebeck, Red Hook and Woodstock.
Guest have free range to every aspect of the house on the first level. (no access to the basement which houses the heating units etc)
Any and all goodies stocked in the cottage are there for your enjoyment.

Prior to your arrival i will email you to inform you how you can gain access to the cottage. Even though we are not always in the neighborhood, we can always be reached. Feel free to text/call/email me at any time during your stay should the unlikely event that a problem arises. We will immediately contact the proper authority to have the problem remedied.
The Neighborhood
The cottage is located on a dead end street but we do have neighbours. We love being on the water. When we are not on the water we explore all the antique shops, farmers markets, flea markets, hiking and sometimes boating in the Hudson River. The cottage is close (20-30 min drive) to downtown Saugerties, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Woodstock and Kingston which are filled with activities and restaurants. The cottage is a 5 min drive to the grocery store, beer and wine stores.
Getting Around
We have a train that goes by, but it's a goods train.
However one can take a bus from nyc, or the train/Amtrak from Grand Central/ NY Penn. The train stop will be Rhinecliff or Poughkeepsie. But you will need a taxi or car to get to the cottage from the train station.
Once you book you will receive a simple contract/ agreement. The booking will be considered complete once I receive the signed agreement back with the names of all guests.
Dates are not held until reservation is confirmed along with a signed and initialed Rental Agreement and Pet Addendum (if applicable) is received.
Mailing address is Saugerties and we are a 10 min drive to the downtown area also called the village of Saugerties. 15 mins drive to Woodstock, Kingston , Rhinebeck.
I chose our home because of the location, but I know we cannot chose our neighbors and what they do to, with, and in their homes. We have a diverse neighborhood of people of different colors and socio economic backgrounds. We also have lots of trees which have leaves and twigs that fall and i cannot keep the outdoors as clean as the indoors because of the trees, leaves, twigs dust and especially pollen in the spring which are the joys of outdoor living. The dock is seasonal only during summer.
The train passes by anytime day and night. Now that goods are being transported you are sure to hear the train. Some days they seldom pass by, there is no schedule. The creek is long and deep. There is a waterfall on both ends.
While we love our home I am well aware that our home does not work for everyone which is why I highlight these negatives. Please make your decision to book our home with all this in consideration.

Summary: We had an amazing time at Chez Rive Gauche! This cute little cottage was so clean and had everything we needed for a long weekend get away. Letitia goes above and beyond to make her guests (including the pups) to feel comfortable from cold beers in the frig to gift cards to a local restaurant and creamery. She was also super responsive - thankfully - given that we locked ourselves out of the house (so embarrassing). But she responded in minutes and helped us out of our predicament! We enjoyed coffee every morning on the back deck overlooking the water, which was beautiful! We would highly recommend this cottage. Thank you Letitia!

Summary: The idyllic photo of the cozy cottage ensconced in trees and bathed in light was exactly what greeted us upon arrival! Chez Rive Gauche was the perfect respite for us city folk from NYC who, with a senior special needs kitty, were desperate for a pet-friendly vacation spot close to home and a short roadtrip away. Cozy morning coffee and journalling on the upper deck…cozy meals prepared in the light-filled kitchen…cozy cocktails on the lower deck by the creek enjoying beautiful breezes and calming sunsets…cozy sleeps in comfy beds. Again, exactly the respite we were looking for with all of the simple pleasures of feeling at home. Last but not least, we were delighted to have had the opportunity to meet our lovely hosts Letitia and Sanjay, who were very responsive to any question we may have had. We knew we would be well taken care of, and that was a good feeling. Looking forward to returning at the earliest opportunity!

Summary: What a lovely little cottage! We were interested in hiking nearby and kayaking on the creek, so the location was just right. Communicating with Letitia was easy, efficient and timely. Sanjay even stopped over to set up the dock for us, so I didn't have to do an obstacle course to get into the water! Lots of good ideas re: restaurants, etc nearby (including a very nice gift certificate to Black Eyed Susan's that we used, thank you very much!). We brought along our dogs, and were pleased to see that they had set up a dog bed, feeding station and had "dog towels" for us to use. (Only someone who really loves dogs understands that we'll go through more towels for them than for us!). The landing was the perfect place for morning coffee and late afternoon wine. The kitchen has everything you need (we mostly cooked, as still a bit leary of restaurants due to Covid, and it was First Friday so Saugherties was hopping!). Loved the flower beds out front. Yes, there is a train. You'll hear it, but most of the time it was just background noise. The "traffic" on the water was a little loud one night, but didn't last long. Overall, we were really pleased with our stay.

Summary: My family has stayed in a number of short-term rentals over the last few years, and we all agree this was our favorite. The location was gorgeous. Listening to the birds and watching the creek flow by while sipping morning coffee on the deck was exactly what we needed. Yet so close to everything! Perfect launchpad for exploring the region. The decor was fun and unique, and Letitia's communications were timely, friendly, and informative. Nothing bad to say. Highly recommend!

Summary: I loved this house. Spotless, everything in perfect working order, huge TV, flawless central air and heat (for days that ranged from 44 degrees to 85 in a single day while I was there), and carefully curated decoration and furnishing that made the home feel laid back for the dog and me but still very pretty. The kitchen was my favorite, a wall of windows lets in plentiful sunshine. The garden is pretty, the deck, backyard and lower deck on the water are very pleasant. I didn’t get to swim in the creek because it was out of season and entry was muddy without the dock in. But it was gorgeous. The place had the feel of jungle with raucous birds and the sound of roosters in the distance (don’t worry, not loud enough to wake anyone). One can see the houses on each side of the property, common on waterfront property, but it was quiet and the neighbors were very nice. I felt enough privacy yet completely safe as a woman alone. I was really worried about the train before I came. But it didn’t end up bothering me. For comparison, being on a lake with jet skis and motor boats is WAY louder. I was never woken up by the train and, unlike what one reviewer said, it didn’t shake the house. As to the neighborhood, it is not a “bad” neighborhood. The house is on a dead end road — a working class residential street, maybe a mile long. Some of the houses are large but most are modest. It’s not a tourist area. People go to work and seem to come home to mow their lawns, brush their dogs, and quietly go about their lives. The road was diverse, both economically and ethnically, with mostly Caucasian, but also Black and brown people, which diversity I personally value. The house and road were quiet, safe, and convenient to everything the area has to offer — I went hiking every day, lunched in Woodstock (20 minute drive) and swam at the Saugerties Lighthouse beach with the dog (15 minutes). Overall, this sweet house provided me a convenient and quiet place to write, hike, visit friends, and relax.

Summary: We traveled to Saugerties to attend the wedding of our dear friend's daughter, which was postponed twice due to the pandemic and found a home that welcomed us with open arms! Letitia is simply lovely, generous and responded right away when I reached out, but only to tell her how much I loved her home. Meticulously clean with everything you need overlooking a beautiful creek with dock seating and a deck to dine alfresco. The funky charm gave you the feeling that you traveled to a far off destination and the occasional toot toot of a train made your mind wonder back to days gone by. The town is very history and speaks to you - a treasure for everyone is to be found - and if you are a foodie you are all set! There are hiking trails nearby and so many historic sites to be discovered. After a long day of adventure you will be happy to come back "home" to such a warm and cozy place to take a hot shower, bbq something nice for dinner and have sweet dreams in a comfy bed. I look forward to returning next fall - making it a tradition. Thank you Letitia!!
