Pililani means "close to heaven", which is an appropriate expression for this property. The magic of this land clearly speaks for itself, let alone the fabulous house and the many wonderful amenities. This is a heartful, warm and cozy place which is also cheery, vibrant and fun. Pililani is the ultimate gathering place for two or ten, for friends or families. When walking through the beautifully landscaped grounds, whether picking tropical flowers or sampling the fruit from the orchards, you can feel that this place is nourishing to the soul. Pililani is a carefree retreat, completely removed from ordinance stresses. It is really what Maui is all about.
This is an exceptional upcountry property, suited to travelers looking for a unique home in a rural setting. Very careful attention has been paid to every detail. Entry to the property is through a custom crafted bronze gate. The long driveway winds through a hedged area, to parking spaces at the back of the house.
The first view of the house is looking through the glass walkways, across the fish ponds, to the pool and cabana area beyond. With it's unique Thai style, and quality cedar construction, the house is architecturally pleasing and a memorable structure. The entire four acre property is hedged or fenced, to provide a high level of privacy. A huge investment has been made in landscaping this property, resulting in hundreds of tropical plants and trees, flowers, citrus trees, and a variety of mature palm trees. Nestled within the wings of the house is a tropical fish pond with a variety of exotic fish and water lilies. Every area of this property has an interesting or special feature - from the garden for cut flowers, to the 'spirit garden', to the reading chair tucked into a garden grove, each was created to enchant children and adults alike.
The recreation area can keep you occupied for hours! To one side is a fully wind screened, regulation size tennis court with a viewing area. UPDATE AUG 2021 - We completed a resurfacing of the court, and added striping for both tennis and pickleball!!! The forty foot swimming pool is surrounded by a flagstone patio. Sitting next to the pool is a large hot-tub, and a sauna. The pool cabana has a sink, small refrigerator, gas grill, and plenty of outdoor furniture.
The house was designed with flexibility in mind. The main wing of the house offers three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, huge living/dining room, and a gourmet kitchen. There are plenty of windows giving the rooms a warm glow of light. The peaked roof is supported by two huge cedar pillars. Other features include wood floors, tiled kitchen and custom tiled bathrooms, granite and butcher block counters, Viking range, laundry, TV, DVD and CD stereo. The front of the main living room opens to a covered deck, leading down to a platform at the edge of the fish pond.
To each side of the main wing are covered walkways, leading to two master suites each with queen bed, sitting area, work desk, fully tiled bathroom, TV, CD stereo.
Why do I consider this home unique? “Unique” to me is the experience, rather than the size/look/furnishings of a home. It's a home that begs families to reconnect and create new memories. Our Pililani property has everything you could want – fruit orchard, fish ponds, pool, hot-tub, sauna, tennis / pickleball court, but yet it's the small things that delight the guests. For example, the Fairy Garden, a resting place for fairies as they travel through the area. Or the custom mosaics that are discovered in unusual places. Can't find grandma? She probably discovered the reading nook tucked into an alcove of gardenia bushes. Perhaps “unique” is the amazing outdoor shower that's tiled to look like a wave. Many of our guests have never showered outdoors until they come to Pililani. When they depart, they're trying to figure out how to build an outdoor shower at home. There's “discovery”, as a young child sees fruit growing on trees, rather than sitting on a shelf in the supermarket. And the warm glow as a grandparent teaches a toddler to swim in the pool, or a parent teaches their child how to swing a tennis racket. At the end of the day, hear the contented sigh of a cyclist as they settle into the sauna after a ride to the summit of Haleakala (quite a feat).
This is what makes Pililani “unique”, and always a favorite of our guests.

What Our Guests say 500 + Reviews

Summary: The landscaping was beautiful. The house was the perfect size for the seven of us from three different families. Wonderfully apportioned kitchen. Great to have a private pool, though chilly in November. The only thing that kept this from being an excellent review is that the furniture is horribly uncomfortable. We spent evenings at the house, and it was impossible for anyone, including children, to be comfortable on the furniture. This is a remote location and you are 30 minutes from most anything, but it is a bit noisy in the neighborhood. I would definitely recommend staying here for anyone who doesn’t plan on trying to gather or watch movies, etc. in the house.

Summary: Our large group of family and friends had the time of our lives at Pililani. Cathy and Melody made everything easy from booking to checkout, and we cannot thank them enough for their professionalism and patience. You will not be disappointed in any way with this home, that is, until you have to leave. Mahalo!

Summary: This was such an amazing property, and so much better than the photos. The living space was a perfect blend of having private quarters away from the main living space, as well as a nice open area to be together. The pool and facilities were fantastic, and we felt like we were staying at a hotel resort, but with no crowds, and no one to share it with except for our own family! endless areas to do yoga, read, and enjoy the sun. We will definitely be coming back.

Summary: We enjoyed our stay at Pililani House. Central location, not close to anything but never far from everything. Lots of room for our family to each have their own space. The furniture is a bit dated and in need of some updating but worked fine. Pool was a bit on the cold side as it's not heated. Tennis court is in great condition and even had pickle ball. Something to note. The area has hundreds of wild chickens and roosters. The roosters start at 4:30 AM so not much sleeping in. The house directly below the house raises and or trains pit bulls (lots of them). They howl and bark a lot. We did have a few sketchy people around the outside of the property that made us a bit nervous but nothing bad happened. Coffee maker didn’t work but a new one was dropped off within hours. Great hosts and the house was very clean.

Summary: The hosts are extremely responsive to any issues (e.g. my mother couldn't get the safe open and they sent someone within an hour!) . If the ad intrigues you, your expectations will be met.

Summary: This house accommodated our group of 10 beautifully. It provided wonderful spaces to enjoy time together, as well as opportunities to read a book or catch a quick nap. Day trips for snorkeling, scuba diving, and viewing from the top of Haleakalā were facilitated by the location. We loved the pool and enjoyed many competitive games on the court. We were so appreciative of the excellent and timely attention provided by Cathy and Melody. They set the bar for dedication to quality service. Thanks for ensuring a wonderful visit.

Summary: We loved our stay at Pililani. The property was incredible. My kids loved exploring the ground: catching geckos & toads, feeding the koi, swimming & tennis . . . they were so happy there (and the adults had a chance to relax!). I loved my sunrise morning yoga on the patio next to the koi pond. It cools down in the evenings, we slept with windows open and were very comfortable. Never missed A/C. Loved the occasionally misty rain. It felt magical! While it's a bit of a drive to get to most places, it is centrally located if you want to "explore it all." Nothing is too far away. We spent a day on the road to Hana, a day on the volcano, a day on the north shore, snorkeling trip to Molokini, and two west shore days. Loved that we could visit Twin Falls separately (on our north shore day) and really take our time there because it's so close, and then have more time for other activities on our road to Hana day. Pililani had things that were very useful, not sure if they were provided by the host or left behind by other travelers: pool noodles, beach chairs, a cooler, boogie boards, some snorkeling equipment, etc. My daughter loved picking oranges and making fresh squeezed orange juice at breakfast (she'd never had that before!) and other smoothies. All in all, if we could afford it, we'd return here EVERY YEAR. It's my favorite vacation rental I've ever stayed in.

Summary: We absolutely loved our stay! The layout of the house allows for privacy, but also offers great gathering spaces. We spent most of our time walking the grounds, swimming in the pool, and relaxing. Although there is not A/C the house cools down well in the evening. The property managers were amazing to work with, very responsive, and hospitable. We’ll definitely be back!
