The Space:
Oakura beach is a stunning and laid back beach village for a relaxing family holiday, located ten minutes drive to New Plymouth on NZ's West Coast, Surf Highway 45. Enjoy wonderful boutique shops, great cafes and restaurants.
Chester Cottage is an original kiwi bach, older in style and original in decor, however the location is the key here, as it is situated in an extremely sought after waterfront position. No frills, but cost effective accommodation for its position in Oakura. The perfect escape from the busy hustle and bustle of everyday life. Offering direct beach access (slight over growth for privacy from public beach) is rare and situated amongst multi million dollar homes.
Open the door and be greeted by a chilled beach vibe and soak up the ocean and beach views from almost every room in the cottage.
Fully equipped kitchen (no dishwasher) and open plan living, and little nooks creates a certain warmth. Large private and sheltered deck with ocean views. Your senses will immediately be evoked by sea spray and all your cares and troubles will fade away. This bach is still used by the owners so does have some personal items in it, so guests need to be aware of that.
The entire second floor is a master suite with a king bed and bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and a nook where you can sit quietly and soak up the sea views. Two additional bedrooms on the main level consist of a bedroom with a queen bed where to can slide back the door and step out onto the deck; a constant reminder of your waterfront position, and a twin bedroom with two single beds.
Spend your days swimming, surfing, windsurfing or just wandering along the beach all day long.
Please note: No 027 cell coverage on the Oakura beachfront and wifi can be intermittent, so this property is not suitable for business travellers.
Please Note The Cleaning Fee: All linen & towels are provided by a commercial linen company and are professionally laundered. Properties have been cleaned prior to guests arrival to meet the Ministry of Health commercial cleaning standards. A part end of stay cleaning service is included. This covers the cleaning of bathrooms, mopping and rubbish removal. Guests are required to leave the property in a tidy and clean state all dishes are washed/the dishwasher loaded and turned on prior to departure.
All Bach Break properties come well equipped with cooking oil, salt, pepper, coffee, tea, milk, cleaning products, dishwasher tablets, dishwashing liquid, toilet paper, liquid hand soap and body wash.
Other Details:
The property is very well equipped with most things you will need on holiday. If you use a hair dryer we ask that you bring one with you as hair dryers aren't supplied.

Summary: The house has not been deep cleaned in a very long time. We killed a minimum of 15 spiders during our 3 nights there…one of which was LARGE and in the bed during the middle of the night. We had a water emergency and it took us 4 calls and over 30 minutes combined of our morning to even get someone to answer the phone (even their emergency line). Luckily the water issue was the shower would not turn off, but the water was contained to the bathtub. Otherwise the entire upstairs would have flooded before anyone answered the phone. As a result we only had the very tiny shower to use (master bath was out of commission) for 2/3 of our stay. The agency felt $60 NZ was an amount that we should have been grateful for. I was not overjoyed with this based on the level of the issue, but also did not want to waste any more holiday time dealing with them. Summary: house is in a great spot but until it is under different management with better cleaning I would not stay here again.

Summary: Rating Details: The property manager was somewhat unhelpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was more than happy with the location. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Chester Cottage could be a lovely place if some upkeep and maintenance was done. There is no shelf or storage space in the second bathroom. The steps down to the beach need to be repaired and the shubbery needs to be cut back. Take down all the cobwebs would make it much cleaner. Maintaining and trimming all the bushes and shrubs would allow better views of the ocean and all around. The bedrooms were adequate. The kitchen had too many unorganized drawers and cupboards -- a thorough cleanout and purging of duplicates and old items would be a good idea. When Bach Break management was contacted requesting a replacement for a broken item, there was no response at all.
