Radda in Chianti Villa | Cosoli, Charming Two-story Historical Villa Situated In The Heart Of Chianti

5 Bedroom Villa in Radda in Chianti

Cosoli is a family house and the main residence of the owners. It is ideally located right in the middle of Chianti Classico, midway between Florence and Siena, allowing to experience the atmosphere of the surrounding small towns, like Greve, Castellina, Radda, Volpaia, Vertine, but in easy reach of other well known places like such as San Giminiano, San Galgano, Volterra, Monteriggioni and Pienza. A one day trip allows you to visit the most attactrive medioeval and early renaissance towns of Orvieto, Cortona, Spoleto, Gubbio, Urbino, and also the gulf of La Spezia, with the resorts of Lerici and Porto Venere, and the the neighbouring Cinque Terre (The Five Villages) along the Ligurian coast.
The property spreads across a little more than 5 acres. The villa overlooks the 2.5 acres of olive grove, surrounded by a beautiful view of surrounding vineyards and small villages in the distance. The property is bound on all sides by a fence to protect the plants from wild boars, roebucks and deers living in hundreds of hectares of woods that surround the property.
The interior is decorated with artifacts/souvenirs from our trips around the world. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything to enjoy a fantastic Italian meal.On demand Alessia, a professional cook, can come and prapare at home a typical and sophisticated diner for you and your guests. In the courtyard, where you can enjoy the majority of the meals, there is also an old brick oven to cook your pizzas or to grill Tuscan beef meat (“tagliata”) and sausages. Most of the bedrooms overlook the olive grove and at night you could hear the wild boars in the fields below. The pool is cool and refreshing and enjoyable almost at any time during the renting season. Small children can play at the Playground, equipped with wooden houses and outdoor structures.
You can enjoy the lovely sunset on the terrace with an aperitivo, a bottle of the local Chianti and a plate of prosciutto crudo (ham), salami and caciotta (local cheese slices).
The small surrounding towns are a must, as they offer a large choice of extremely good restaurants, excellent food shops with local specialties, wine festivals and caves, open air farmers markets for your fresh vegetables and many other options. The local grocery store has a 'live' butcher, fresh bread and most everything else. You can’t miss the monastery and church of S. Leonino going back to the 11th century, whose religious functions preserve the tradition and attractiveness of ancient chants.
Being not too far away from Siena you can enjoy the Palio (twice a year, in july and august), a must for first timers.
A little more on the house and its history
The house belongs to the category of buildings that historians of Tuscan architecture call “spontaneous architecture” being the result of additions made through centuries by successive generations. Its most ancient part is deemed to go back to the 13th century and one can still detect, where now is the upper part of the sitting room, the features of a small square tower conceived as a lookout of a fortified farm, named “Le Stinche alte”, that today survives as a ruin. “Le Stinche” in the second half of that century belonged to the Florentine family of Guido Cavalcanti, a close friend of Dante Alighieri and himself a renowned poet, who, like Dante, was a “Guelfo Bianco”s (a “White Guelf”), that is a follower of the moderate faction of the “Guelf” Party. This fortified farm in 1304 was assailed and taken by the “Guelfi Neri” (“Black Guelfs”), the radical faction of the Guelf Party that had become the fierce enemy of the “Guelfi Bianchi”. At that time, the “Guelfi Neri” acknowledged as their leader Charles II of Anjou, King of Sicily, whose son Robert, Duke of Calabria and future king of Sicily, was moving from southern Italy to Tuscany with a large party of knights (see Davidsohn, Storia di Firenze, german title Gechichte von Florenz)). In due time the small lookout developed as an agricultural farm.

Summary: The villa was absolutely beautiful. The view was magnificent, the pool maintained very well. The villa was roomy, kitchen was well stocked with dishes, utensils, etc. There was an issue with a/c which Graziano had resolved in 48 hrs. The cleaning service with Cristina and her helpers were not intrusive and we were completely satisfied. The last day we had no water in the a.m. but again, Graziano had repair people in so that we could use toilets, take showers, wash clothes and dishes before we left for home. The roads were difficult to navigate but not the owners responsibility.

Summary: From arrival to check out, Cristina & Graziano welcomed my girlfriends and I with open arms. They were both so sweet and down to earth, we immediately clicked. The property was gorgeous, with some of the most stunning views I have ever seen. The pool area was so peaceful. Our stay was fantastic and it was made even better with two home cooked meals by Alessia!! She is a marvelous Chef, her food & personality were outstanding. We loved all of her dishes! Can't wait to go back!!

Summary: We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Cosoli. The property is lovely, the home is comfortable, attractive and very personable- it is clearly a family home and was well suited for our two families traveling together. (It would also be quite romantic for those traveling without the kids!!) Staff, Cristina and Graziano were both helpful in getting us settled in to the villa. Including generously escorting me to the market - a feat which felt overwhelming due to jet lag. Highlights included delicious dinners prepared by Alessia, served on the terrace with amazing views of the vineyards while the sun set and church bells rang in the distance. We also enjoyed daily swims in the beautiful pool, and our younger kids enjoyed the adjoining playground. Everywhere you turn on the property is a lovely backdrop for photos - the gardens are gorgeous and well manicured. Photo ops with sculptural hedge, roses, pergola of wisteria, not to mention landscape of olive trees and vineyards. We joked that we should've brought nicer clothes for our kids for portraits. The "gravel" road to the villa is challenging, but once you have found the villa, you will decide the privacy it affords is worth it. Trips into the surrounding towns for lunches and gelato were easily accomplished. Would highly recommend Alessia's dinners if you want to have several glasses of wine and not designate a driver. We also did day trips into Florence and Sienna, and found the driving distance Not to be problematic (I.e. No complaints from the kids). Cosoli quickly felt like home to us, and we are grateful to the Berlenghi family for sharing it with us.

Summary: Our recent stay at Cosoli was absolutely delightful. The location is extremely private and you feel as if you have the whole valley to yourself. From the moment the gates open and you glimpse the villa down the tree-lined drive, you know you and your family have chosen well. The home is spacious, with many charming historical details like the stone courtyard, fireplaces, terrace, and stone steps to the upper floor. The well-tended gardens and landscaping (olive grove, arbor, lemon trees, etc.) are immaculate and the view off the terrace (and from the pool) is stunning-- especially at sunset. We toured the many nearby vineyards and small villages during the day and enjoyed the lovely, cool pool in the afternoons/evenings. Our children enjoyed exploring the grounds, listening for the sounds of wild boars in the woods-- very exciting for them! We had dinner prepared by a local cook (recommended by the owner) a couple of times during our stay-- the food was authentic and excellent. We also enjoyed a delicious meal at nearby Osteria La Panzanelle in Lucarelli. Siena was an easy daytrip for us, as well. Overall, we highly recommend Cosoli to families seeking an authentic Tuscan experience in a tranquil, beautiful setting.

Summary: We are a retired adult couple living in Vienna. This year we spent some time in Tuscany. We were awed by the beauty of the region, its culinary delights and its wines. But living in the Cosoli only contributed to our full enjoyment. Ever since, Cosoli has become we refer to as a reference. The amazingly good taste of the owners, the spaciousness and that huge fireplace where we grilled our italian sausages were only few of the marvels the place has to offer. The wild flowers coupled with the greens from a wide variety of trees and bushes offered a delightful palette of colours as if a painting. Laying by the pool and gazing at the rolling hills with a soft refreshing breeze is what the Italians refer to as the "Dolce vita". An unforgettable site comparable to the typical Tuscany post cards. We had the opportunity to meet the owners and understood the harmonious manner in which each piece in the house had been picked with much thought, love and patience. Each of the bedrooms had been styled in a different character without compromising the style of the region. Whether with children who will be free to run in acres of land, or friends with whom great moments can be shared, or a couple alone searching for peaceful bliss, the Cosoli offers it all and for all ages.

Summary: The purpose of our visit was to re-visit our roots and family in Italy. We wanted something centrally located in Italy, close to the autostrada's , yet to be able to experience the local ambiance of the smaller cities. When we arrived and the gates opened to Cosoli it was spectacular. The villa overlooks a massive olive grove but yet surrounded by an incredible view of surrounding vineyards and small cities in the distance. The interior is beautifully decorated and you feel as though you are walking through history with the massive library's of books, and other artifacts from the owners travels. The kitchen is very well appropriated with everything to enjoy a fantastic Italian meal. Our favorite was the brick oven and courtyard in which we enjoyed the majority of the meals during our stay. Most the bedrooms overlook the olive groves and at night you could hear the wild boars in the fields below. The pool was cool and refreshing and enjoyed most every afternoon. We did not have small children with us on this trip but the Bambino Village would have been a favorite. We experienced three "la bella lunas" during our stay which with a bottle of the local Chianti would sit for hours watching the amazing sunsets and the beauty of a full moon. It go's without saying their are some very fine wines in this area. The small surrounding towns are a must, as they offer fantastic food (Volpia-BarUcci's my favorite) and many more close by,wine festivals, shopping and farmers markets for your fresh vegetables and many other options. The local grocery store known as the "coop" has a "live" butcher, fresh bread and most everything else that is available to us in the States. Can't miss the local monastery and church's from the 10th century that are a must and very close by. We were lucky enough to be within 1 hour of Sienna where we were able to enjoy Il Palio, a must for first timers to the area but only two times a year it is ran. We had a painting done by a local artist of a picture my husband took of Panzano which hangs in our formal dining room and a constant reminder of what a beautiful area to visit. I encourage you to travel to the big cities as most are within hours but nothing compares to the smaller towns that surround Cosoli. The villa respects that you treat this as your home and enjoy the beauty that the owners have afforded you.
