What Our Guests say 500 + Reviews

Summary: Windstein is a beautiful quiet village and so many of the villages around there were very pretty. The gite was spotless, it has a very small kitchen but the lounge and the bedrooms are fine, we also loved playing pool. On arrival we found the whole gite smelt very overpowering of drains, when we asked Lucienne we were told it was drains due to the heavy rain however it was there for our full 5 days and completely ruined our stay, if it was a hotel you would leave or at least change rooms but we were stuck. In addition to this the owners house is attached with a first floor door into your gite and the garden that is for your use is actually her garden and across the other side of the drive and in front of the main house, whilst she said we could use it with our dog we didn’t feel comfortable doing so. Had we known about both of these factors we wouldn’t have booked the property and we definitely wouldn’t return.

Summary: This is a quiet, comfortable house in a stunning, untouristy location. Lucienne is very nice and helpful. There are lots of great walks, on the doorstep and a short drive away. Don't miss Castle Falkenstein! We went to Wissembourg, Strasbourg and the Maginot line fort Schoenenbourg (which you can visit without a guided tour, unlike Four A Chaux, which by the way doesn't offer English language tours). Having the pool table is fun. We enjoyed our stay.

Summary: Prior to booking, the reviews that I read and the description and photographs of this property on the website suggested that this was a special place and we were not disappointed. The whole property was immaculate, but still homely which allowed us to settle in and enjoy every aspect, which made us feel that it was 'ours' for the time we were there. The owners are very friendly and obviously experienced at making their guests feel at ease, even though the language was a bit of a barrier (more our fault than their's!) The welcome file of information was very comprehensive which helped us to quickly get aquainted with both the property and the local area. The rainy weather at the time in Alsace meant that we weren't able to fully utilise the pleasant garden though we did manage a bbq for which ample coals and firelighters were provided and the pool table provided a welcome distraction one evening. The old Windstein castle ruins are easily reached through a short but steep walk up the hill and are well worth a visit along with a very nice Auberge a few hundred yards up from the property. Sadly this was only open Friday to Sunday during our stay. There is also a lovely restaurant in the nearby village of Dambach which serves excellent Tartes Flambes and is run by an English lady and her French husband...well worth a visit. One thing we noticed about this part of Alsace is that it is not very 'touristy', which to some may be ideal, but this also means that there is a need to 'hunt out' bars and restaurants which actually open during weekdays. However, the border with Germany is relatively close so if driving around to explore is your thing then this will give more options for sustenance. We also visited one of the authentically restored forts which formed part of the Maginot Line. This was extremely interesting and well worth a visit, though does entail a fair amount of walking. In summary, I would not hesitate to recommend this property as a base for anyone wishing to visit this lovely area of France.

Summary: The Gite has every convenience and is well equipped and comfortable. The owners were kind and welcoming and helped us plan our day trip to Strasbourg. There is a restaurant 100 metres up the road and the town of Niederbronn is only 15 minutes drive away. We had a great holiday in a peaceful and beautiful setting and would have no hesitation in recommending the cottage to our friends and family. Alan and Gill Brisbane Australia

Summary: "We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the apartment in Windstein. The apartment was immaculate and extremely comfortable with a large dining/lounge area, well equipped kitchen and two good sized bedrooms. We also appreciated being able to use Wi-Fi. Windstein is a small peaceful village with beautiful views of the countryside and is a very good location from which to explore the unique Alsace area. It is within easy driving distance of beautiful Strasbourg and surrounded by interesting historical areas including the two chateaux in Windstein itself. Lucienne is a charming and very helpful proprietor who welcomed us with a bottle of Alsatian wine and traditional Kugelhopf . We greatly appreciated being able to relax in such a comfortable apartment after our daily explorations of this beautiful area."

Summary: "We had a wonderful stay at the Windstain at 28 rue des Chateaux. The owners were cordial and an excellent source of what to see and visit in the area. The house was fantastic (3 levels, 2 toilets, bathtub, shower etc.) and the rooms were immaculate and very welcoming. The house is full of interesting artifacts from around the world. It is within walking distance from local restaurants, old castles and hiking trails. We can't wait to return for another stay! owners of the house have been some of the best people we have met in France, and their house was very comfortable. It has really been a pleasure meeting them, they made us feel very comfortable, very well taken care of and at home. We are very much appreciated the friendliness and openness of our new friends + their lovely friendly dog. We were greeted and welcomed with a bottle of local Riesling and cake, which was very beautiful addition as well to our visit. The owners had also invited us to the beautiful main house to have a nice conversation and tastings of local wine."

Summary: "The accommodation is the cleanest I have ever stayed in. Very quiet in the evenings and silent at night, which was perfect. Lovely views from the rooms and only 100 metres walk to the footpaths. The only traffic is to the restaurant 100 metres away. Parking is in the yard of the house, next to your door. The house is very well equipped and Lucienne had provided absolutely everything we needed for our baby. There are two small spiral staircases in the house but stairgates were fitted on the main level which was very good. I must not forget to mention the wonderful Kugelhopf and bottle of Reisling which greeted us on our arrival. We hope to return!"

Summary: "We were very pleased with the accommodation, which was full of character, beautifully clean and in perfect order. The surrounding area is as lovely as we thought it would be, and the whole area is peaceful and quiet. The owners are charming and very helpful, even welcoming us with a bottle of Alsatian wine and a kugelhopf, an Alsatian speciality cake. Gites don't get any better than this!"
