Summary:
Our family of 5 adults spent Christmas in Costa Rica. The house was perfect for our trip. The house is very comfortable and and had all of the things we needed for our stay. The pool and outdoor areas were great. The jungle is in your back yard and the monkeys came through each morning and evening. The location is excellent for seeing the area and the local beach and water were excellent. The managers Chloe and Dan were terrific and Dan is an excellent surfing instructor if you want to give that a go. The area is very secure and we felt very safe. This is a terrific choice if you want a place to yourself with lots of room.

Summary:
We had a wonderful time at Casa Tucana. We were a group of 5 adults and two toddlers. Arriving past midnight, we were greeted by a cheery Chloe who gave us a quick welcome and house set-up. The house is clean, comfortable and breezy, bright, beautifully furnished with spacious, private rooms and all the ammneties you need.
Beautiful salt water pool which the kids enjoyed for endless hours. There were 3 separate socializing areas – the outdoor lounge, which is shaded and private with a well -kept garden of palms and other local fauna. A small deck: perfect for evening drinks and an outdoor area on the roof with a nice view over the surrounding jungle/fields.
We saw monkeys and geckos and frogs and the odd cow in a nearby paddock. Were pleasantly surprised by how bug free the property was. The proximity to the beach was just right– a 15 minute walk or 2 min drive. In the rustic village of Esterillos Oeste there was a grocery store with everything. The village is a true local spot, not at all touristy. Though you definitely need a car to fully enjoy the area between Jaco and Manuel Antonio.
The house was the perfect respite for naps and quiet relaxing during the midday heat and we organized our activities for the mornings and late afternoons. We found Bejuco a magic spot – nice wide beach and lots of local families.
Chloe and Dan were very helpful – arranging car rental through Zuma (who conveniently included a driver to and from the airport) organized local catering for a birthday meal for one in our party, setting us up with the best guide for our tour of Manuel Antonio and zip-lining at the excellent nearby Ocean Ranch.
I might add that they accommodated us within a week of having their 3rd child – and made themselves available for whatever we needed, which was an impressive feat in itself.
Overall, we adored Costa Rica and were very comfortable at Casa Tucana where thoughts of our stressful loves back home melted away. Would highly recommend it for a relaxed family retreat. Thank You so much Chloe and Dan!

Summary:
This review comes a bit after the fact, but suffice to say: This place was incredible! The saltwater pool and ping pong table created the perfect mix of becoming tropically overheated and delightfully refreshed! The house itself is great and spacious, we were there with 9 people and it never felt crowded.
Also, it is surrounded on most sides by jungle-y gardens, so there are mornings were you have monkeys right next to you, and afternoons were lazy cows clang their cowbells on the other side of a hill
The property was clean and the laundry was great.
The only snags we encountered were a pretty serious roof leak (onto one of the beds) over the first two nights. However Chloe and her husband were able to fix it, and were very helpful. They even helped those who were crazy enough try surfing.
Location wise, the house is great, it is about a ten minute walk from a very nice beach, as part of a sort of spread out town; there is a restaurant near the beach that we did not find out about until near our last night (it is owned by a Canadian, Chloe will be able to tell you the name) - it was awesome.
Getting groceries was a bit of a hassle, as we only had a shuttle service; the cost of that was a bit extreme for days where we did not have substantial ambitions, and there was some confusion regarding the extra cost of airport transfers which left a sour taste in a few of my companions' mouths on the last day; I would simply say make sure to figure all of that stuff out ahead of time!
This place is surrounded by great beaches and parks, the owners are teriffic, the house is a lot of fun, and airy and peaceful, and it was definitely better than we could have imagined. As a result, the same group of people are seemingly forever committed to taking holidays together to beautiful houses in warm places every winter from now on!

Summary:
We had a great time at Casa Tucana. The house was lovely and well furnished. Very relaxing and private setting. The rooms were large with tall ceilings, the salt water pool…. Aaaah…. perfect! We played ping pong on the beautiful teak table and BBQ on the patio. There was monkeys in the trees and a sloth too. Kids were very excited….so were we!
Daniel (owners' son) was super helpful. He and his wife are from California, so it was easy to communicate. They arranged some fun things for us to do. It was really nice not to have to deal with the planning. We rented local cell phones from them so we could always be in touch, which was reassuring. Our favorites adventures were: surf lesson & jet ski with Daniel, Zip lines and the Crocodile River tour. We also spent a day in Manuel Antonio and an afternoon in Jaco which are only about a 20-35 minute drive each way. Its was fun but quite a bit more crowded than Esterillos.
THis was a super relaxing setting, the beach went for miles and was perfect for surfing and boogie boarding (rented boards from Daniel - very convenient). Kids had fun swimming in the calm water of the tide pools (water is about 85F). We were the only ones on the beach most of the time except for a few locals.
We stocked up on food in Jaco before getting to the house, as Chloe had suggested, and got pretty much everything else we needed at the local grocery store. There are 3 restaurants in the village, we tried them all, all fresh, tasty food.
Over all, we totally loved our stay at Casa Tucana and recommend it for families or groups who want to experience the real Costa Rica.
Thanks Dan and Chlo for a fantastic time.

Summary:
House was perfect, clean, great location if you want the true Costa Rican feel. Daniel was more than happy to help us with excursions off the beaten path. Beach was a great walk, not crowded and safe. Local restaurants were very good. We had six adults who enjoyed morning animals, birds and lizards. Pool was cleaned twice during our stay and housekeeping came once. Toilets were not an
issue ( that's how it's done in Costa Rica, it's okay). We really enjoyed the pool. The house could use some up keep with the swing, two chairs outside and the stove which is a little temperamental. Otherwise great place, definitely need a car. Thank you Daniel and Chloe.

Summary:
Great vacation all around! Casa Tucana has every thing needed and is beautifully furnished and very spacious... and cool! We enjoyed the large salt water pool overlooking majestic palms. Lots of monkeys passing every morning.
The owners' son, Daniel, and his wife Chloe live next door and were most helpful. Daniel gave us surf lessons, took us out on the jet ski (so FUN!), Chloe arranged some meals for us, and massages, even car and cell phone rental. They made everything so easy and planned several excursions for us--snorkeling at Tortuga Island, horse rides, river rafting, crocodile river tour and zip lines. Every one has such a great time. It was a good thing we took their advice and got up very early (6am!...even the teenagers!) wouldn't miss those magical morning hours.
We loved the little village nearby. Not much there, but the grocery store has everything you need and there is a great carribean style restaurant. It's definitely local and we loved that. The beach was beautiful and totally empty!!! Great for learning to surf.
We wish we has stayed a couple extra days (or weeks!), it was hard to leave paradise. We plan on going back, hopefully next year, with friends (Daniel's parents own another couple large luxurious homes a few miles away). This was a great home and vacation, we recommend it whole heartedlly.

Thank you to Pura Vida Casas and the Murdochs for making our vacation outstanding! This is the kind of place you return to again and again. To start, everything was taken care of for us; from the rental car and driving from the airport to Casa Tucana to cell phones to planning our excursions to our first batch of groceries. Daniel and Chloe called or texted us daily to make sure our needs were met and accommodated us as our plans developed. We chose the more casual Casa Tucana, because of its location near the beach. With five of us ranging from ages 13 to 75 this was perfect. We could walk or ride bikes to the beach, swim in our pool and lounge on the roof-top deck while others drove off chasing surf if the local beach wasn't pumping. The house is surrounded on nearly 3 sides with undeveloped forest and jungle. Because of this we saw as much wildlife while sitting on our decks as we saw in the national parks. We even had a resident sloth living in our tree who we named Jerry. Fascinating and our new favorite animal! The house is located in a sleepy settlement on the usual Tico pot-holed side roads and yet still an easy and beautiful drive north to Jaco or south to Quepos. Perfect for us to slow down and shift into the local vibe. We have told many people about this rental and only wish we could communicate more fully the ease and pleasure we experienced. We haven't stopped planning our next trip back. Pura Vida all the way! Thank you:)

Summary:
Casa Tucana is a gem of a house with an amazing backyard view. We stayed there for 9 nights and enjoyed most all of it. At night we enjoyed the nightly songs of the Tink Frogs and all the other insects that come out and sang for us. We also enjoyed the great number of butterflies in the backyard, as well as a family of monkeys that traversed thru the trees on our last day. The pool was truly a must after a long day out and about. The house is also close to a cozy little surfing village and far from the tourist billboards you get from planting yourself in Quepos or Jaco.
There are however a few points to consider before booking your stay at Casa Tucana. What I was initially attracted to was the centralized location between Quepos and Jaco. The owners described the location on HomeAway.com as 15 minutes from Jaco and 15 to 20 minutes from Quopos. The reality is that it's 15 to 20 minutes from Jaco and 45 to 50 minutes from Quepos.
The house was also to be cleaned mid-week. About mid-week, the owner showed up at 5:00pm to do some cleaning. This was a terrible time to clean as we just returned home from a long day and were all settling in, unpacking, and getting ready for dinner. He told us he was headed south to go surfing the next morning. We asked to have someone return the next day and got the ‘nod’ that someone would return. No one came to clean.
Another surprise was the toilets do not flush toilet paper. You must instead manage a small bucket of trash next to the bowl. After a few days of stinky bathrooms you get the hang of it. I can’t say that this isn’t common in most rental homes but if you’re considering other homes, it’s a good question to ask.
Due to the location, you’re definitely going to want a car. And if you’ve been able to manage finding this house, navigating to its location, and thinking through what you want to do, you certainly can book your own excursions. The owners will gladly book your excursions for you but in doing so, you’ll pay more. There are many options for all the zip lines, nature walks with or without guides, water falls tours, fishing, surfing lessons, etc. And working directly with the provider, you can negotiate the best price. This also holds true for stocking the house with food prior to your arrival. The first night you can simply dine out and pick up a few items for the morning within a 2 minute drive toward the beach.
All in all, I’d give our stay at this home 3 stars.

Summary:
We stayed at this property after Christmas into the New Year. It was perfect for our family of 8--grandparents, adult children and 3 grandchildren. It is situated about a 15 minutes walk from the beach in a quiet little subdivision. The house itself is lovely with very usable spaces inside and out. The photos accurately portray the property. That said, there were definite problems with the management, which I concluded was poor communication between the owners, the local manager and the people who maintain the property. The local manager had obviously not been told that we would be arriving so early (even though I had told the owner this) so the house was not ready. The man who cleans the pool was never told we were coming so the pool was green with algae for about 2 days while we were there until he showed up for the regular weekly cleaning. He was very embarrassed about the pool.. The same can be said for the gardener, as he hadn't done any of the outside work. There was not enough toilet paper nor trash can liners. Our trash was overflowing as there was no outside container and we didn't want to put the trash out in just a liner due to the animals. We were told that the house would be cleaned halfway through our stay, which would have been at 4 days. When no one had shown up on the 6th day, we cleaned the house--inside and out--ourselves. Finally on the 7th day the housekeepers showed up unannounced. As we had already cleaned there wasn't much for them to do. We were told that there would be certain amenities (such as a DVD player and an Ipod dock). Neither were there, although when we pointed that out to the manager, he did buy some and bring them by within a few days. The inside cushions on the sofa were very dirty. Upon out return, I emailed the owner to let her know what had happened and was assured that this had never happened before.
Esterillos Oeste is a wonderful little town. We loved the beach there--very flat, wide and long. The ocean was perfect for our grandkids. There is also surfing. Our favorite restaurant was Los Almendros which is located right in town. Fresh, delicious food.
