Scottsburg Cabin | Fish, hunt or relax - Riverfront Cozy 2bd Cabin on Umpqua River fenced 1.5 acres

2 Bedroom Cabin in Scottsburg

For the 2024 we have added new wood flooring throughout the cabin, and fully remodeled the bathroom!
Please note that the Umpqua River in Scottsburg is tidal water and the water height will change up to 8 feet depending on the current tide. If you are using a boat we suggest taking it out of the water before low tide to prevent any damage to your boat. Due to the storms in late spring 2025 (highest flood levels since 1981), there is quite a bit of sand at the dock site and the dock can be beached if there is an extreme tide.
Outstanding Riverfront Cabin on 1.5 Acres. The property is completely fenced and very relaxing.
Just 18 miles up Oregon Scenic Highway 38 from Reedsport, is the historic town of Scottsburg. One of Oregon's oldest communities. The temperature is often a good ten degrees warmer than the coast, and with the towering cliffs of trees, and the river flowing peacefully by. Please note the dock is in the river Memorial Day to mid Sept only.
This charming cabin has a rustic log interior. The cabin has a full kitchen with all the modern amenities. There are two bedrooms - the master has a queen bed and a twin bed, the second bedroom has a queen bed. The bedroom walls have a approx. 3ft gap up the top so light and noise does transfer from room to room. Most folks never notice it. We have good WIFI service at the cabin with a new router and provider!!! Recently we added a beautiful new deck on the front of the cabin to enjoy your meals while overlooking the garden.
The cabin is set about 150 feet back from the River on an 1.5 acres. The cabin shares the property with another house that is not rented out or used when the cabin is rented. This is a perfect place to have a private getaway or bring the kids for swimming and fishing in the river during the day and campfires in the evening. (Please note there is sometimes a complete fire ban in the county in peak summer season - that means no campfires, fireworks, or charcoal grills). A large lawn outside the cabin allows for family BBQs, games or a quiet place to relax. A gas BBQ (with gas) will be provided.
The river is tidal, and this is the last stretch of the Umpqua you can get a motor boat to. Beyond the bridge it is too rocky, and shallow. There is a boat ramp just two miles away up stream. We can provide referrals to a number of excellent local fishing guides.
Our dock is in the river during summer months only Labor Day to Memorial Day guaranteed. Its the perfect place to sit, and soak up the sun, or jump off into the river to cool down. Bring you inflatables or kayaks!
Scottsburg is less than twenty minutes to the west of Elkton, where you can go wine tasting, visit the Butterfly Pavilion and Education Center, or tour Fort Umpqua - a replica of the Hudson Bay Trading Company fur trading outpost. Scottsburg is 18 minutes east from Reedsport. Activities in Reedsport and Winchester Bay include; Dean’s Creek Elk Viewing, Umpqua Discovery Center, Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, ocean fishing, crabbing, sand dunes, and much more!!
There is a small general store in Scottsburg just a short drive away, or the nearest shops are in Reedsport. Cell phone service depends on your carrier. Verizon is fine, AT&T not so. We love it because we leave our phones off, and our troubles goodbye. WIFI service is available however.
There is room to park your small RV, boat trailer etc. No cable but there is a Smart TV for streaming your favorite programs, as well as a good selection of books and family games.
Please note that no pets are allowed at this time.
If you have any further questions about the area, or property please do not hesitate to email or call.
Thanks, John and Kaycee
Area Fishing Guide
The Umpqua has one of the most varied river fisheries in Oregon, including a world-class smallmouth bass fishery and strong runs of spring and fall chinook. The Umpqua’s north and south forks come together northwest of Roseburg, and the mainstem flows more than 100 miles northwest to Winchester Bay. Smallmouth bass fishing begins at the top of tidewater and continues up to the forks and into the South Umpqua. Late winter and early spring offer trophy fishing for the Umpqua’s largest bass, while the warm summers bring fishing so fast and furious that an angler could tally 200 fish in a very busy day. Spring chinook are fished from late March into July, with best catches usually in April and May. Fall chinook start moving up in August and September, although the bigger fishery for them is in Winchester Bay (see below). Hatchery coho are planted in the South Fork and move through the mainstem quickly after the first fall rains. Both winter and summer steelhead fishing can be good, with summer fish peaking in June and July on their way to the North Umpqua. The larger winter run sometimes includes a fishery for wild steelhead, and hatchery fish on their way to the South Umpqua are present in good numbers. There is usually good steelhead fishing from December into March. The Umpqua also has a good run of shad that arrives in May and June. Shad are fished from Scottsburg upstream, including popular spots at Sawyer Rapids, Yellow Creek and the forks.

Umpqua River, North Fork
Treasured for its good runs of wild and hatchery summer steelhead, the gorgeous North Umpqua is also fished for wild winter steelhead, spring chinook and fin-clipped coho, and it offers fine trout fishing above Soda Springs Reservoir. A mix of hatchery and wild summer steelhead enters the North Umpqua in June, with catches high in July and August and again in October and November after the water cools. The river’s winter run gets going well in January but these days is primarily wild fish. Spring chinook are present from April through October, with peak catches in May through July. Trout fishing is best above Soda Springs Reservoir for both rainbows and browns. There is a popular fly fishing-only stretch in the 31 miles of river below the reservoir’s dam.
Winchester Bay
The Umpqua River’s bay at Reedsport and Gardiner is a great producer of fall chinook salmon, and it also has good numbers of fin-clipped coho salmon, sturgeon, striped bass, perch, crabs and softshell clams. Fall chinook fishing is very popular, providing catches from July through September. Hatchery coho – along with lots of wild fish – are caught in good numbers in late summer and early fall. Fishing for white sturgeon is good in winter into spring. Striped bass move between Winchester Bay and the lower Smith River, with some good bay fishing from June to October. Perch and rockfish are caught in numerous locations from boats, jetties and docks. Crabbing is popular from boats and a pier in Half Moon Bay. Softshell clams are abundant on the flats off Bolon Island and elsewhere. Boats from the ports also access offshore fishing for salmon and other species.

Summary: We were grateful to find this little gem on a quiet friendly street next to the river. Swimming was so nice and the cottage was clean, newly renovated, and had everything we needed. Bring your own basics like salt and spices and sugar! Otherwise all utensils are available. Beds were comfortable, owners easy to contact if needed, and just the most relaxing time. We had no concerns with the gap above the wall separating the bedrooms, and we were with an infant. It’s a cabin, not a soundproof hotel room. Thats the charm :) Thank you John and Kaycee, hope to be back one day!

Summary: We spent a lovely few days at this cabin. The house was well-kept and had everything we needed for a getaway with kids. We enjoyed hanging out on the dock, fishing, swimming at high tide (the river depth changes quite dramatically throughout the day), playing lawn games and just relaxing on the porch. We also day-tripped to the Oregon Dunes and Reedsport, which is an easy 20-minute drive.

Summary: The cabin was as expected, but the photos were deceptive. I looked forward to the dock on the river as the photos indicated. There was no dock.

Summary: The property was as described. Our kids loved waking up and going fishing in their pajamas. It was a great time for everyone. Whether we wanted to just relax inside and play board games or go outside everything we needed was there.

Summary: This is our second time here and we had a wonderful time. My favorite part is sitting on the dock fishing for Small Mouth bass. My wife caught the biggest one I've seen come out of there on our last night there. Everything is kept clean and tidy and if you are looking to relax in nature without the roughing it part, this is the place to go. There are some really cool towns to explore within 30 mins of the home. Our only problem is that we keep running out of time. The owner is also really easy to contact and is quick to respond. We are hoping to make this our yearly retreat.

Summary: I want to be fair to this property and I know some of our experience was not typical, so I've tried to separate my review into 1. What could be improved, and 2. What was part of our experience. 3. Positives. 1. If I owned the house: - Bring the walls all the way to the ceilling. The description says: "The walls have a small gap up the top so some light and noise does transfer from room to room. Most folks never notice it." We did. The gap is 2ft tall in some places, all light/noise travels between the rooms (bathroom is only room with sound privacy & unfortunately, the fan sounds like a jet engine taking off). Don't bring a snorer or plan on having "special mommy+daddy time" or watching tv after kids are in bed. ;-) -TV (Living Room) speakers are blown. Cheaper By the Dozen sounded like a war movie. :-) - Kitchen knives dangerously dull. Could not cut tomatoes without smushing. - Squeaky bed kept us awake! One of the twin beds squeaked like a goose being stabbed. We had to move our son to our room. - Get a dish washer. Bummer to hand wash dishes on vacation. 2. Probably just us: - I told the owner we were chemically sensitive, allergic to glade plugins, scented candles and the like. It was an honest mistake, but a glade plugin was left behind the couch in the main room. As a result, we suffered mild headaches & discomfort during our stay. It was a bummer because we were traveling & paying for a trip away from the bad smoke of Southern Oregon only to be staying in worse air. - The towels and blankets were quite fragrant as well. They were probably dried with dryer sheets. - Hill accross the river blocks sun a few hours before sunset, so it gets chilly on the dock. 3. Glad we went: - The owner's parents live next door, quite friendly & helpful. - The lady next door brought over delicious tomatoes to share! She also came to fix something. She was nice, friendly & answered a few questions. - Walk to the river not long or hard. - River was perfect for swimming & playing, the dock well made & spacious. - Spices, movies, board games, game systems all abound! If the weather had been bad or cold, we could have kept ourselves quite busy. - quiet neighborhood. - Short drive into town, very cute town. Everything closes at 7 or 8pm, no midnight ice cream runs. - Close to a bridge and state park where you can put in, short drive to Reedsport. Overall, we were glad we went, but a few things kept us from being stoked about our experience.

Summary: I stayed with my two boys ages 16 and 11 years old for 3 nights. When we arrived it was a very hot day in Oregon. The house has no A/C but there are several fans in the house for you to prop up in the window to get a breeze going. We keep the fans going until around 10:30pm each night then close up the windows and left the fans keep going on us so we could sleep. We used the dock each day, both my boys had fun swimming around the dock. The water is a little fast moving if you are using a floating device. We brought and blew up our own water floats and brought rope to tie to the dock so we didn’t venture to far from the dock. We visited the Elkton Community Center in Reedsport and that was a lot of educational fun! While in Reedsport we ventured to find the Sand Dunes and that was so special to see, there was sand for as far as your eyes can see and as high as a mountain. If you like ATV’s they have an area where you can rent them for the day. You do need to stop in the little town to get a parking pass that can be bought for $5 for the day for parking in many of the area’s within the sand dune area. ( The sand dune area is about 4 miles south on the 101 HWY). While trying to find the sand dunes we came across the Umpqua Lighthouse and took the tour of the lighthouse that was built in 1890, wow. We got to go all the way to the top and see that amazing red and white glass prisms, all original to 1890.00 We stopped and saw the Dean Creek Elk viewing area on the way home from Reedsport (it’s along the way home) and what an amazing experience. The Elk came up really close to the fence in the viewing area. I have never seen so many Elk in one place. We took a half day and visited the Butterfly Pavilion and Gardens that also houses Fort Umpqua, YOU must visit. The butterfly exhibit alone is worth the 30 minute drive from the house but walking back in history to go into the house at Fort Umpqua and learn history was so much fun. After visiting here we drove back into the very tiny town and right behind the restaurant that is also a convenient store we found a little state park that had access to the low tide water and really large rocks you can walk on. We walked on the rocks until we found a private area and then and my kids seized the day and clothes on and all jumped in

Summary: Clean home, tons of activities, great dock, warm water for swimming and perfect fishing location. We saw a seal, bald eagle & lots of fish. This was our second stay and we are already planning to return. Owners are easy to work with.
