Positive: The traditional culture sucks you in at this place and although there are no private bathrooms, it is to fully immerse yourself in the experience of onsen. And, in addition to comfortable accommodations, the dining on site was superior with custom-made local food options for both breakfast and dinner. Access to the ski mountain is across the street which made renting and skiing from our very own hotel easy and lended an intimate family run feel.
Summary: Intimate cultural experience

Positive: The staff were just so lovely, friendly and helpful. The food was AMAZING. The best we have eaten through all of Japan. Dinner time was the highlight of our day after a long day skiing. The communal dining was also great for meeting with other guests and chatting. And, the dog was a huge bonus.
Negative: It’s not so much about what we didn’t like, it’s more about the location. It’s a bit further out from the main part of the fields but still very accessible with the free shuttle bus to and from. This wouldn’t stop us from booking again.
Summary: A true gem in Shiga Kogen! A real culinary delight with the best hosts!

Positive: The food was amazing, it was an experience on it's own. Be prepared to eat things that you wouldn't usually eat and have a real authentic Japanese experience. I looked forward to breakfast every day, the food was beautiful and presented beautifully. The owners are super helpful and the location to the ski lifts is superb. We hadn't done an Onsen yet until we stayed at Shiga Kogen, so it was baptism by fire as the shared bathrooms is the Onsen, but don't be put off, it's an amazing experience and the Onsen is great after a day on the slopes.
Negative: The beds and rooms aren't super comfy, but that is what you get with the true Ryokan experience. It is a bit of a pain not having a bathroom in your own room but it's something that you get used to very quickly.
Summary: An amazing authentic Japanese experience with excellent access to the ski fields.

Positive: The staff were excellent, the food was superb such a great range on offer each night with a different menu and breakfast that was a combination of both Japanese and western. The location to the ski area is great also. The private onsen facilities were such a treat also. The lodge doggo is such a sweet girl happy to sit next to you while you play cards near the fireplace.
Negative: Overall it feels a little tired, perhaps a chance to introduce a few more western toilets also.
Summary: So glad we chose to stay at Shiga Kogen Lodge for our first time in Japan for our family winter holiday.
