Relax and get away....
This rustic cottage on Carters Creek is ideal for a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle. For an individual guest, a couple, a couple of friends or a small family, this is just the right space to decompress.
The Crab Shack is right at the water's edge and its cozy bedroom, dining area, galley kitchen and living room all face the water.
The Crab Shack earns its name honestly...it was originally a seafood processing facility where fishermen brought and sold their catch. The outside of the building is all metal and the inside is a mix of painted and exposed wood, with a striking floor-to-ceiling oyster shell fireplace. Usually guests congregate outside on the patio or dock, but if it's rainy, the porch or indoors is where to be, to enjoy the sound of rain drops on the tin roof.
The Crab Shack is within a ten minute drive of the quaint towns of Irvington, Kilmarnock and White Stone with a variety of shops and restaurants.
There are two cruiser bikes ready to ride along the quiet country neighborhood.
There is one 14' sea kayak stored on the dock for our guests use. It is stored on the dock with a set of KayaArms that allow stable entry and exit from a ladder. Some guests have brought their own small personal watercraft...you can paddle to the Tides Inn faster than you can drive there!
There is also a set of stairs for easy access to in and out of the water for you and your dog. If you plan to get in the water, be sure to bring river shoes! The oyster shells and barnacles are abundant and WILL cut bare feet.
Dogs are welcome for a small fee.
If you've stayed here before, new owners made improvements during the winter of '21-'22! We hope you'll join us!
Update 1/23/24:
Both of our neighbors (one on each side) will be building homes beginning '24 with anticipated completion by fall of 2025. Given The Crab Shack's location so close to the water and being down the slope from the road, we don't expect the residential construction activity to detract from a peaceful vacation, however some occasional construction related noise should be anticipated.

Summary: The reviews on this property are true…you cannot get any closer to the water without being in it!! Everything about this rental is great! Absolutely no traffic, quiet, peaceful and great food in Irvington. A real hidden gem.

Summary: We stayed at The Crab Shack over Easter weekend and were so impressed by the property, the eve of communication with the owner, and the beautiful setting. While this is a smaller home, it is packed with amenities and is perfect for a couples’ getaway. We loved our experience & are looking forward to booking again soon!

Summary: The Crab Shack is magical. The rustic property has been updated in thoughtful ways to provide guests with a peaceful escape. The water and other natural surroundings allowed us to relax and reconnect with nature and each other. The quiet location is close a lot of adorable towns with good food options. Highly recommend.

Summary: This was our third stay at the crab shack, and we plan to come back forever! Of course it is clean, cozy, and quant, but mostly, there is a such a peaceful energy to the place that is hard to put into words! You cannot beat the serene feeling that you get from staying here!

Summary: We just got back from a long weekend at the Crab Shack. We had such a great time at this lovely spot. Could not have been more comfortable or relaxing. Loved the accommodations and the location could not have been better. An added bonus was the fact that the fish were biting and the crabs were plentiful! We look forward to our next visit.

Summary: We enjoyed the beautiful waterfront views especially the spectacular sunrises. The passing boats and waterfowl entertained us all day and the dock was a great place to relax in the evening. The decor was perfect for a waterfront residence, casual but well equipped. With all the delightful views, comfortable furnishings and great activities close by, it's hard to be crabby at the "Crab Shack."

Summary: We loved staying at Carlisle's place and the location was beautiful and remote while still close to everything! Our favorite thing to do was sit outside and watch the boats go by. So peaceful. Carlisle was also the most responsive host we've ever had, which I think is a huge plus. FYI: We didn't have phone service while at the Shack (we use Mint Mobile), so I would make plans to prepare for that in case it could be an issue. For the most part, it was a welcome escape from the daily grind of technology and always having to be connected.

Summary: This property is everything we hoped for. The view is stunning just down Carters Creek from the Tides Inn so the boat traffic is constant. The Crab Shack is so cute with breathtaking views out of every window. The host is great to work with and she made every bit of our stay a pleasure. We cannot wait to go back and that includes our 11 lbs dachshund who loved laying on the pier enjoying the beautiful afternoon breeze.
