Hotel in Thame

Since the 16th century, The Spread Eagle has hosted historic guests such as King Charles II and the writer Evelyn Waugh. Today it offers a warm welcome, excellent food and free Wi-Fi. The Spread Eagle is in the heart of historic Thame, famous for its 1-mile-long (1 mi) Main Street. With a rich history, the hotel’s guests have included royalty, famous politicians, writers and even French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars. The Spread Eagle was made famous by the unusual John Fothergill, who owned the hotel in the 1920s. He wrote about this in the popular book, “An Innkeepers Diary”. Fothergill believed in the highest standards of food and service – this tradition continues in The Spread Eagle’s Eden Bar and Grill. A fresh new English menu is served, including a reassuring ‘comfort cooking’ section. The fantastic city of Oxford is within easy reach, along with the historic town of Aylesbury. For shopping addicts, Bicester Outlet Village is only minutes away.

Positive: My sister and I stayed overnight on Saturday 9th August. I booked through Booking.com as the rates were slightly better, and breakfast was included. Before booking in we popped into the bar area and checked how to access the car park. We were directed by a very helpful bar man. Having parked, we went to reception. We were greeted by 2 staff behind the reception, and the woman behind the desk asked how she could help. Having eaten breakfast, we went back to the room to collect our things, and check out. There was a different woman at reception - she was lovely. She asked about our stay and apologised, understanding that people come away and want to be looked after and treated respectfully. We were so grateful to be listened to.
Negative: When arriving at the room I was surprised that the bed was a double, as our booking information suggested it would be a king-sized, but this was fine, and possibly an oversight on my part. The en-suite was satisfactory, with a little mould towards the taps on the bath and very noisy taps (possibly a pump, for better water pressure?) and the free toiletries which were fixed to the wall. The fan in the bathroom didn't work. There was no view, apart from into another guests' room or roof tiles (some stuck together with gaffa tape). There were no sockets near the beds - certainly not close enough to place items on the bedside tables. The tv remote was very stubborn, and although advertised, there was no access to streaming services. I found a fan in the wardrobe which I then took apart, cleaned and tightened to stop it spewing dust all over us, and making a ridiculous noise. We went to get a meal shortly after booking in. Again, there were no pleasantries such as 'enjoy your evening', or any recommendations on where to go, even though my sister prompted conversation, and nothing again, on our return. We enjoyed our evening, and slept well. And then to breakfast! Without looking, staff were unaware whether there were any tables for two. We were then taken to an empty table which had been neither wiped clean, nor laid. Our cooked food order was taken reasonably quickly. Having asked for crispy bacon, the waiter explained that the only bacon they did was 'the one which had a round bit and then a long bit coming off it'!!! My sister then went to get food from the buffet area - there were no cereal bowls, there were no pastries, there were a few melon slices and grapes - but certainly no 'seasonal fruit'. We asked for bowls and pastries but no one came back to us. The cooked breakfast arrived - the egg and hash browns appeared freshly cooked, and the mushrooms were delicious.
Summary: We would have got better service for a few pounds more, at the local Travelodge. Next time!

Positive: Great room with a nice view over the high street, beds were comfortable and shower was fine (I don't like places with a poor shower). Breakfast was served promptly and was enjoyable. I'd stay again.
Summary: Great value for money and a brilliant location in Thame

Positive: Really good location on the middle of town. Disappointed by the breakfast options so ended up going across the road to a cafe that had oat milk and non-egg options. Had high hopes for this hotel that weren’t quite met.
Negative: Our bathroom really put us off the Hayloft suite. The bathtub leaked, the shower didn’t drain so you were standing in inches of water threatening to overflow to the floor and the toilet made a regular growling noise as it tried to refill. There is also no door for the bathroom.
Summary: Just okay
