2 Bedroom House in Beynac-et-Cazenac

The “Stoneroofed House” is located in the heart of the medieval village of Beynac, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France”.
The house has direct access from the garden gate into the cobblestone path leading to the castle.

It has been totally renovated and is resulting of a subtile combination of tradition and modernity.
Tradition with 500 years of history for the house built in 13th century and still topped with original steeply pitched roof of stacked stone called 'lauzes.'
Tradition inside the house as you will find limestone walls in each rooms, ancient wooden beams, 2 large original stone decorative fireplaces but also ancient furniture like an outstanding 18th century renovated “baldaquin” kingsize four poster bed in the master bedroom, the 2nd bedroom upstairs with single beds has 2 unique triangle wooden windows (called “Outeaux”) preserving the original openings in the stoneroof.
Modernity with an open plan fully equipped kitchen, brand new bathroom with spa shower cabin, flat screen TV with DVD equipment, Ipod dock station, leather dining chairs, comfortable living room seatings.
The living room opens directly to a terrace and followed by a garden of 300 sqm with scenic views over the Dordogne and valley of the 5 chateaux and the village down the hill and the church of the castle up the hill. Outdoor dining table with comfortable chairs and 2 relaxing sun loungers shadowed by a massive platane tree.
The house is ideal for 1 couple or 1couple with a child but not for very old guests or disabled person (access to the house by foot from the post office). You will find at walking distance (5-7 mn) from the house down the hill restaurants, grocery shop, bakery, butcher, post office, pharmacy, newspapers and magazines.
The castle is perched on the top of an imposing 152 m limestone cliff dominating the river Dordogne and appears to come straight out of the 12th century as it was built by the barons of Beynac.
Our area :👍
The department of Dordogne is a part of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
It is the 1st producer of strawberry and walnuts in France.
The Perigord Noir as part of Dordogne area gets its name from the abundant oak forests. It is well known for its gastronomy and more particularly for its product related to duck (magret, confit…) or goose such as “foie gras”. It is also one of the most famous mushrooms area in France with truffles which grows underground at the base of the oaktree and are called Black Diamonds) and cepes which are just wonderful sliced in omelettes.
The region is offering a large variety of prehistoric sites with troglodytic housing in the cliffs like Les Eyzies (30 mn from Beynac) in the Vezere Valley but also the worldwide famous paeolithic cave paintings of Lascaux (40 mn from Beynac) dating back to more than 17.000 years. Some other jewels like Padirac cave complex and less famous like Maxange caves with eccentric concretions in Le Buisson (30 mn from Beynac) are just fantastic.
But the Perigord accounts for lots of medieval castles and bastides as fortified medieval towns like Domme, Belves, Montpazier (from 10 to 35 mn from Beynac).
Perigord is a paradise for the walkers : it offers a beautiful environment in which to walk surrounded by walnut orchard, dramatic cliffs, discovering chateaux , prehistoric sites…
👍
Beynac has a long history : it has been inhabited in the Bronze age 2000 years bc… but the castle has been built in the 9th century in order to control this stretch of the Dordogne from Vikings. The chateau has remained in the hands of the Beynac family during more than 500 years from 13th till 18th century and during the 100 years war, Beynac was one of the French strongholds whereas on the other side of the river Castelnaud was in english hands
Beynac lies in the heart of the Perigord Noir valley of the 5 chateaux (Castelnaud, Marquessac, Fayrac, Beynac and les Milandes) and is in the middle of the golden triangle : Sarlat (10 km), Domme (10 km), Les Eyzies (30 km).
Beynac is a perfect starting point to visit all cultural sites of the Dordogne.
Sports activity like swimming, fishing, canoeing, biking, hiking are easy to organise from Beynac.

Summary: We loved spending a week at this lovely historic home in this beautiful storybook village. It was a treat to see the breathtaking view at different times of day and to see the balloons flying by. The climb is quite steep, as has been said, but charming nonetheless. The house was lovely, comfortable, and well appointed. We enjoyed cooking in the modern kitchen and were able to do laundry. The housekeeper, Martine, who checked us in was incredibly helpful and very friendly. We would love to return to this home again and recommend it without hesitation.

Summary: We’re a retired couple who spent two weeks here in mid-Spring this year after a one week stay in the house about seven or eight years ago. The garden, with both morning and afternoon sun, is a delightful place from which to chill and watch the village, the Dordogne, and occasional balloon drifting by overhead. Communication with Frederique is easy and timely, especially through WhatsApp. Frederique’s local manager, Martine, is extremely helpful and no more than 5 minutes away (although non-French speaking visitors would benefit from a good translating app). Another suggestion would be to bring a pair of shoes with good traction if the path up to the house is wet from rain. We would look forward to returning in a couple of years.

Summary: We just returned home from our stay at the Stoneroofed house in Beynac and we miss it already. In the week that we stayed in this magical place we enjoyed starting our day by opening our windows to the cool air and hiking down to Les Delices de la Vallee for morning pastries. The croissants, plain and chocolate filled; the pain au raisin; the pistachio/chocolate-filled and almond-filled pastries; the eclairs and bread - all were wonderful. (We justified eating all of these, as well as our tasting of area glaces and gelato, by all of our hiking up and down the small stone paths, climbing stairs in villages and chateaux, and daily walking to explore the many sites of the area.) My camera is filled with wonderful sunrises and sunsets, including morning mist in the valleys and hot air balloons rising over the chateaux at dawn and dusk. We canoed the Dordogne one morning, starting our trip at 0930, which meant we almost had the river to ourselves and it was before the heat of the day. We would definitely do that again. We enjoyed touring Chateau Beynac very much - the amazing construction of the chateau and the views of the valley were well worth the climb. Chateau de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle was also enjoyable, with an interesting display of weaponry of the time. We explored many villages in the area and attended several markets. I think our favorite villages explored were Beynac, La Roque-Gageac and Domme. We also enjoyed the market in Cenac-et-Saint Julien and made an impromptu picnic from some of our purchases there. Our early September weather was perfect. The path up to the Stoneroofed house is steep, as several reviews have mentioned, but definitely worth the climb. The home is comfortable and we appreciated the updated kitchen and bath. The patio and garden areas were the perfect site for picnics, evening glasses of wine, or just gazing at the amazing view. We had the opportunity to meet Frederique, daughter Kim, and Pascal one evening and count our time getting to know them as one of the highlights of our visit. Martine, who met and checked on us regularly, is a delight and was always helpful with whatever was needed. Our most memorable evening meals were at La Petite Tonnelle and La Terrasse des Chateaux in Beynac, and La Traverse "Chez Les Filles" in Cenac-et-Saint Julien. We also had a good pizza at Chez Tom while visiting La Roque-Gageac, and caught a live music performance (Blues) at Le Bo Bar in Beynac. We hope to return someday!

Summary: We are completely enamored with this idyllic house in the charming town of Beynac! Be warned that staying here may tempt you to move! This is the perfect place to stay for those who love history and nature and we found it the ideal location for our explorations of the Dordogne. It was spacious and comfortable for our family of five, including our three teen and adult children. It would also be a very romantic retreat for a couple. I recommend scheduling your trip to include plenty of time at the house itself, it is a delight! The entire region is replete with fascinating things to explore and we really enjoyed coming back to the house after our adventures with Paleolithic cave art, medieval castles and towns, and kayaking. We spent most evenings on the deck and in the yard, eating and enjoying the local wines while appreciating the beautiful, peaceful, and intriguing view. Frederique was a delight to work with in the months that preceded our trip and both Martine and her daughter were very kind and helpful during our stay. Martine keeps the house spotless and she was full of helpful advice. The information about the steepness of the walk to and from the house is all true. We were glad to be traveling light with our backpacks and not large suitcases. If you have mobility issues it would be a challenge to stay here, but for everyone else, it adds to the charm. There aren't many groceries in town, so I recommend bringing your coffee, breakfast, etc. with you or planning to walk down to the patisserie in the morning. The house is well designed and tastefully decorated. The living space on the main floor is inviting and leads out to the deck and large yard. The upstairs had ample room for three beds. Unfortunately, we were there during a heat wave and we were unable to keep this room cool. Below the main living area are the master bedroom (that could be straight out of a storybook), the bathroom, the toilet in a separate wc, and the laundry. We are already dreaming of going back! Thank you Frederique and Martine for an unforgettable experience!

Summary: Celebrating our moms 75th birthday with a trip to the Dordogne, we stayed at the Stone Roofed House for a week in May 2018. Frederique could not have been more responsive and accommodating, and the House was perfect for my mom, sister and me. Visiting Beynac is like stepping back in time, and it’s a quick drive to Sarlat and many other wonderful places to explore. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!!

Summary: Our stay was absolutely perfect. The house is stunning - the pictures do not do it justice. Martine, the property manager, was an absolute delight and was so helpful during our stay, including bringing us fresh crepes one day! A lovely bottle of wine greeted us upon arrival as well. The view cannot be described - I took so many pictures of the view of Beynac. And you can see Castelnaud from the kitchen window - it's like living in a dream. The house was beautifully decorated and the kitchen had everything you'd need. There is a little market in town and a larger supermarket in St. Cyprien. We hiked every day and were just overwhelmed by the beauty of the Dordogne region. My husband and I absolutely loved our time here and hope to return soon.
