Positive: Shiroyamakan was a highlight of our trip to Shirakawa-go. Although not an official gassho-style house, this 140-year-old inn is nestled within the UNESCO village and blends beautifully into its surroundings. The family-run ryokan operates like a well-oiled machine, yet every interaction felt warm and personal. From the included village tour to the exquisitely prepared kaiseki dinner and breakfast, everything was carried out with impressive attention to detail. The food was exceptional, with a spot-on alcohol pairing during dinner. The two private onsens were a lovely touch, offering a relaxing and serene experience. We especially appreciated the blend of modern comfort with traditional Japanese aesthetics—tatami mats, futon sleeping with rice pillows, and calming views of the garden and pond. Traditional yukata were provided, which we wore comfortably around the house. A truly special stay that honours both tradition and hospitality.
Negative: Nothing.
Summary: A beautifully run, traditional yet modern ryokan.

Positive: We booked this ryokan because of the good views and wanting to try a more modern ryokan. Having visited a few around Japan, we were always bowled over by the hospitality and delicious cuisine at each. However, we didn’t really enjoy the food served at Shiroyamamakan. It was too minimalist and experimental for us, and the portion of the mountain vegetable dish was so little it was bordering on being frugal. We didn’t understand why we had to throw our own rubbish at the end of our stay too—for the price per night there shouldn’t be any Airbnb vibes, especially since there is already no ensuite shower. We did enjoy the tour to the lookout point however, and the father was kind to make a heart-shaped snowball for an interesting photo opportunity. Overall, besides good design and hospitality there is nothing very special about this ryokan and it does feel somewhat pretentious.
Summary: Abit too minimalist

Positive: We had a wonderful stay at Shiroyamakan. The 4th-5th generation of this family to run the inn are lovely and you can tell that they have a lot of pride and passion for their work and culture. The food was fantastic with mainly homemade and local resources. We especially appreciated the tour by car from the father on the first day to get some pointers for our own exploration. He also helps with taking photos at the observation deck and is all in all a fun and lovely man. Another plus is that in the morning you get a head start to see Shirakawago before most of the tourist busses arrive. Highly recommend staying here on your visit to Shirakawago, it has been our top experience in Japan so far.
Summary: Best experience of our Japan trip.

Positive: Wow, this was definitely our favorite stay in Japan. The room was gorgeous, the food was delicious, and the family was very kind. Our room had a modern zen vibe with absolutely stunning views. The bath was lovely, too. I like how you get to meet the different family members and they tell you who contributed what to dinner. They all have varying levels of English, but you could hardly tell since check-in and the meals were handled by family members with very good English. The father drove us up to the lookout and gave us a tour with google translate. He also was happily taking tons of great photos for the guests at the viewpoint. When we left, he and his wife walked us out to say goodbye. It's also conveniently very close to the bus stop. Thank you for a lovely stay!
Negative: It was perfect.
Summary: Best stay in Japan by far

Positive: My husband and I came to Shiromayakan for our honeymoon, and I'm so glad we did. The service and amenities were exceptional. This is a family-run place and every staff member is incredibly gracious and went far out of their way to make our honeymoon special. Our room was large and traditionally styled with beautiful windows overlooking the river and heated floors (great for our winter trip!). The private onsen overlooking the river is absolutely gorgeous and very clean. Both breakfast and dinner are provided. They are multiple course meals targeted at adventurous eaters/foodies. If you are traveling with someone with conservative food tastes - make sure to tell the staff ahead of time and they will accommodate!
Negative: The bathroom for our room was a tad small - both my husband and I needed to sit sideways to fit our legs.
Summary: Nicest place we stayed during our honeymoon in Japan!

Positive: The property was exceptional. The room was large and spotlessly clean. This ryokan is 130 years old but has been fully updated internally. The inside is minimalistic in a classic Japanese style. The shared bathroom was spotless and very large and beautiful. We have never shared ammenities in accommodation before and this experience perfect. Shower was great with private onsen. The floors were heated throughout and the windows were large to showcase the spectacular view over the river and garden. The detail including the Japanese wallpaper and the beautiful flowers arrangements throughout will not be forgotten. The family run Ryokan were warm and welcoming and we can’t wait to return. We stayed during winter and this experience will be something i will never forget!
Negative: Nothing
Summary: I’m looking forward to returning to this beautiful family run ryokan as soon as possible
